Alot of people think she was romanticizing abuse with ultraviolence. The term "ultraviolence" comes from the book A Clockwork Orange where the ultimate form of violence is violence to oneself. I think Lana actually is exploring a few ways she or people do that to themselves (consciously or otherwise) - by being in relationships with abusive people, through substance abuse, through working for "money power glory", through being the "other woman", etc.

Ups and downs throughout the album and Swan Song she sort of goes all in with her obsession, to the point of ending her own career just to be with him. In the final song, (yes it's a cover but it fits the narrative) she basically says she was playing around and didn't mean to take it all on him. With more and more listens, I’ve realized how sarcastic this album is. This album came after the controversy of the SNL live performance and she’s taking a jab at critics, especially with every song being in one take. Songs like Brooklyn baby, money power glory, and fucked my way up to the top are main examples, the critics believed she couldn’t really sing so THEREFORE she must be f*cking a producer in order to be successful !! And same thing with Money power glory is about critics saying that she is just money hungry when she is very much the most down to earth artist I’ve come across :)

I’ve said this a lot of times on KZitem, but I feel like she sings from the perspective of an abused woman very very well. She captures the fact that people in these situations feel like they can not survive without their abuser, they are made to believe that it is true love, and that it isn’t abuse. They make excuses for the bad things their abuser does because they feel they can’t leave, that they are worthless, maybe that it’s even their fault. They don’t see it as abuse, they see it as ‘normal’ and just what happens to them, because that’s what he tells her. I absolutely don’t think she glamourised abuse , she’s just telling a story from a perspective we rarely hear from, and I actually think it’s important because I feel like to an outsider it is obvious her character is in an abusive relationship, and maybe someone will hear these songs and relate and realise themselves, and gain strength from the realisation.

Even beyond that, I feel like there's a double meaning to all of her songs through her takes on American culture. You could almost interpret ultraviolence as an ode to America and the complex relationship we have with it. The culture is toxic, obsessed with the bible and guns, appearing pretty on the surface but abusive when you take a deeper look. We have things like woodstock representing the free and rebellious spirit, and the glamor of New York where you get lost in the sea of faces and stories, and the nostalgia we have for the place we grew up. It's easy to get caught up in the aesthetics and ignore the real problems.
@fotos1nt3s1s

West Coast is about Lana moving from New York to California. She is leaving behind NY's rock music scene and preferring the glamour of Hollywood and all that the West Coast has to offer. But it's also an analogy of leaving behind and breaking up with her "cold, neglected lover", her previous partner, the one she talks about in the song Shades of Blue ("that's why I'm leaving you for the moment, Boy Blue, yeah, you"). Then, during the chorus, Lana starts a new relationship in LA (a hotter place) with a Latin lover, a Cuban man ("te deseo, cariño, boy, it's you I desire"), in search of that flame that was missing in her previous relationship. By the end of the song Lana is in love again, she is on fire.

I think it’s interesting that you mentioned that Lana doesn’t come out and say “it’s wrong” when she’s singing about domestic abuse. I think it’s simplistic and somewhat Puritan to say that an artist can only explore darker themes if they put a big old waning sign that says THIS IS WRONG. It makes it feel like an after school special to gram art like that. Saying that a woman can’t explore her own history or an artist can’t show the perspective of living through abuse unless they sanitize it defeats its purpose. If someone can’t speak openly about their own experiences without considering the feelings of how the reality of her being beaten might upset others then that is simply a way of silencing and censoring women.

The deluxe tracks are ABSOLUTELY worth listening to. If you listen, make sure you listen to Is This Happiness and Flipside too. They're not on streaming services but they're on youtube and need to be heard with the rest of the album

the song ultraviolence is actually about a cult leader who used live in NY. He believed that to make people better he'd break them down first. Money, Power, Glory and FMWUTT are a callback to the way midia portraied her when BTD came out. And The Other Woman is a cover

And also a lot of people think ultraviolence is a bad message but it’s just shedding light on the reality of a victim who has turned domestic abuse into a comfort zone she know nothing other than abuse so she craves bcs it’s a comfort zone for her

For the song Ultraviolence, Lana has sense said she wishes she could change the hit me and it felt like a kiss part, she said at the time she had only known abusive love so to her it was normal. and when she sang Ultraviolence as an extra song throughout other album concerts, she changed the line.

You were actually right about Americana always being her theme because when she went on a radio show talking about Norman F*cking Rockwell, she explained how each album represents where she is in the American dream. I love your reactions btw and I love your interpretations on the songs!

I think it is outrageous the Lana was criticized so heavily she’s not allowed to sing ultra violence live. Weather it is about domestic violence or substance abuse or was fact or fiction she wrote it, she Owens it and if she wants to perform live she should be able to! If you don’t think the song is in good taste or if you don’t like it then don’t listen to it and shut up. I’m so sick of the media thinking that the public is so dumb we only do things because famous people told us to do it….no ones going to seek out an abusive relationship because a musician was in one. What about lanas fans that were victims of domestic violence??? We’re just going to have to cancel the song because it’s so awful to talk about? How dose that make victims feel? That they should be ashamed of what they went through? Isn’t that victim blaming? What if Lana was a victim of domestic violence she’s supposed to feel ashamed of it??? That is flat out disgusting and for all the feminists out there victim blaming a victim it is disgusting and the opposite of feminism! Should we stop talking about drug overdoses on the news because that’s going to influence people to overdose? No the whole thing is infuriating to me! Lana has gotten so much hate she must be a really strong person to have sustained it and continuing making music and I am so happy that she has. I started listening to Lana since the beginning and she has been my favorite musician for years and I am so thankful she continues to come out with music. I don’t know what I’m going to do if she stops.

Great reaction! I know that you are a big Lorde fan, so pls don't take what I am about to tell you personally😂 Allegedly, f*** my way up to the top is about Lorde. Sometime in 2012 or 2013 Lorde called Lana's lyrics unhealthy for the youth, specifically talking about Without you (u did a reaction to those delux songs), and called Lana and her music irrelevant.

the second verse is about lorde but the whole song aint about lorde.. lana said she slept with a lot of men in the industry and they rlly didnt help her as much but the "im a dragon your a wh..dont know what u good for" and the other "mimicking me..etc"thats for lorde but the song isnt fully about her its about lana because she slept with a lot of guys in the industry but they didnt help her as much which she found annoying lol

I fully agree with your take that Lana is not romaticizing abuse, but rather she talks from a victim's perspective sharing all the dark thoughts and justifications one tells oneself to make sense of it. There's power in that honesty. It's stuff you don't ever hear about because you're only allowed to talk about it once you've gotten out and once you've dealt with it and came out on the other side.

On sad girl she IS the mistress. "it might not appeal to fools you like you". "But you haven't seen my man". She's justifying it. However she knows she's a sad girl, because she's the mistress. But she loves him so much she can't stop.

This is definitely my favorite Lana album, although it does dip in quality and starts thematically drifting in its second half. Her most consistent album? No. But for me her most sonically and conceptually enticing. You should react to the bonus tracks. It has some duds, but it also has some really good songs.

I was in an abusive relationship and I held on to him forever. Im now away from him, it will be a year in August. This song I relate too so much, because I still love him and i can say when he would hit me and see my busted lip he would kiss me and hiold me and i felt loved finally. Thats why I love Lana so much. She tells my stories for me.

@@Luscent I’m still watching the video sorry I kind of give my opinion while I watch. You can tell Lala heals from the things she’s been through when you listen to her albums. People are confused by her now, because she’s so far away from that breakup. I’m sure she’s still trying to figure out who she is as a person and an artist without the pain she felt then. I hope I’m making sense.

many have said this, but the other woman was a cover from nina simone. fans thought that nina simone sang it as if she's the wife, while lana sang it as like she's the other woman, and in the part before saying alone (35:55 listen to the song) she's like crying because of the pain of being just a mistress, because no matter what she does, he will still choose his wife in the end.

in ultraviolence i don’t think she WANTS the abuse i think she is used to it and believes the person is doing it out of love. she thinks maybe she deserves the hurt. in shades of cool she says “i can’t break through your world” like he’s built his world around sex drugs and rock and roll, she admires that carefree cool life, but she’s needs more and she can’t break him out of the cycle of abuse.
