The Drifters were kings of the radio in the early 60s. When the great Ben E. King became the lead singer in '59, their single "There Goes My Baby" shot to the top of the U.S. Billboard 100 and Billboard R & B charts. They followed with the smash hits "This Magic Moment" and "Save the Last Dance for Me" (1960), "Some Kind of Wonderful (1961), "Up on the Roof" (1962), "On Broadway" (1963), and "Under the Boardwalk" (1964). In 1960, King left the Drifters to start a successful solo career with the soulful classic hits, "Spanish Harlem" and "Stand by Me".

Thank you for the history Ms. Joanne!! There are so many songs so many artists to get too this is going to be crazy.....My pops said to me you have no idea lol.....I know I'm going to move along then comeback cuz there's the 70's and 80's which is my time but again, I was a child and some songs I need to sit down and listen too...But thank you again...quick question...Do you think the Motown 60's is the greatest era of r&b music? Like it's not even close?

@@Dabridge4009 Do yourself a favour and forget the 80's my friend. The 50's, 60's and 70's (my personal favourite) were the decades of great music. I love this song, it's got such a great feel which really does make me imagine being up there.

@@Dabridge4009 Yeah, you will probably think I'm just an old fogey, but I didn't like anything that came out after 77/78-ish. There were a few songs I could listen to once or twice, but none I would have paid for, and certainly nothing anywhere near as good as the 50/60/70's. Obviously, we're all different, which is good. I have always liked songs with a great melody, and I can't think of any from the 80's onwards that have memorable melodies. Happy listening.👍

in 1966 my neighbor was ran the Optimists club dances in vista ca. he asked me to look at a list of groups that were available for a 1 hour set at their next dance. The Righteous Bros were at the top for 5000. they had 500 to spend. i said to get the Drifters which he did. 1 hour of magic music. got the meet and talk with all the members. they were on their way to san diego for another concert.
