14000 HP (10.6 MW!!) Of power, 1/3rd the weight of a normal train (430 tons vs 1130 tons or much more with those extra locos), 8 sets of power cars, regenerative braking and some immensely powerful brakes. More than enough, even for a 1:37 bank both on the ascent and descent.

Usually in Italy all the train are tested in particular metereological condition on mountains lines i.e. Stop and go, stop and go with wet tracks etc. I believe it's the same with V. B.

Even if all the passengers and luggage weighed 100 kg each (highly unlikely), the weight of the train would only go up from 430 tons to 550 tons. Not that much of a difference given the power on hand. I am sure they are tested with a full load. For ref a normal train weighs almost 1200 tons with all those additional locos. Train 18 gets 26 HP per ton as it is, while the normal train even with 4 engines assuming all make full 6000 HP still has 20 HP per ton at best. I don't know how they calculate the 430 ton weight of the Train, but if that is with passengers, then it is 32.5 HP per ton. As you can see the train can do superb speeds even on the steepest 1:37 gradient If need be more power cars can be attached instead of regular cars.

Train 18 doesn't have a single engine but it is thrusted by every coach. So there is no significant pull between coaches. Basically what four wheel drive is for mountains vs two wheel drive for mountains.

Since Vande Bharat has distributed power system, hence both front and rear cab coaches (along with intermediate coaches in between as well) will be powered, hence no need for Banker locomotive. Banker locomotive is needed only in loco hauled trains which do not have power in its last coach!!

An alternative way to understand this better is to know that because every 2nd coach has traction motors, effectively every powered coach has to only haul itself and it's adjacent coach.. So think that 8 such pairs are moving together at the same speed.. That's all.. The most prominent advantage of a distributed traction is infact the lack of need for bankers..

Contrary to what most seem to believe , bankers are used not because a single P4 or P7 cant pull the train up the ghats alone, but because if in doing so a coupling breaks than the part of the train that is behind the broken coupling will have no power and will uncontrollably slide downhill. The use of bankers prevents this by a) Reducing the tension on the coupling b) Preventing the slide downhill even if a coupling breaks .

i strongly feel that the central railways should keep 2/3 coaches attached to the banker locomotives and sell the tickets to passengers so that they can travel up and down the ghats in relative comfort. currently these passengers enter the trains at karjat /kasara , even when they are not allowed to enter the trains, as the other option is to catch the cabs or buses which are not as travel friendly as trains are. the banker locos come down light, so it is not an issue if they have 2/3 coaches attached to them all the time. this will also reduce the road traffic issues in the ghat section of the mum pune expressway and old highway as well on the kasara igatpuri highway. pls forward this suggestion to the concerned railway board so they can take an educated decision on this option.

That's quite an achievement for the steepest climb without losing speed in India at 1 in 37 for broad gauge as build quality itself is made that way. By the way 22221 Bombay Rajdhani via Manmad Bhopal also runs without extra locomotives. They have two WAP7 locos, one for each end running from end to of the journey. These two locos provide more than 12,000 hp power for quicker acceleration. With 2nd loco attached at the rear end, it literally pushes the entire train up the steepest climb reducing the strain on the couplings between coaches and locos.

Great I once traveled on this section from Mathura Jn. To Bom via Central Traileag (Bhusawal Manmad). I enjoyed the Beauity of nature thru mountains N tunnels. Those were the steam locomotives days. Do U know all US Freight trains from LAX to NYC (Heavy Loads fresh Food refrigerated freight trains are pushed by many Diesel locos. Because of Airconditionerd attached to the wheels increase the load factor thus needs many engines. In US track owned by privately many private rail system like Union Pacific, Norfolk Southeren, BNSF (BNSF totally owned by Warren Buffet).

It uses both the front and the back engines at the same time as we can see the pantographs of both the engines have been raised when the train crosses the camara; so, there is no need for the additional banker engine..
