Half Japanese here, the bowing is the Japanese’ “handshake.” It’s what you do when you introduce yourself but it’s also a way to say “thank you” or “excuse me”. For example, if you’ve seen Japanese people do a light, short bow, it could mean “hello” or “thank you”. If they’ve lightly bowed to you at the airport or when you walk into a store, that’s the hello. If they’ve lightly bowed when you leave a store or if you’ve held a door open for them, that’s the thank you (if someone lets you go ahead first or open the door for you, you can do a light bow in return and say “domo”).If someone has had to push past you in a crowd and then bowed towards you, that’s the excuse me. So, short bows can mean many things but usually it’s just a sign of respect or politeness and it’s a way for them to communicate to you without speaking your language. A deep and long bow is usually used for formal greetings, such as self introductions or used at the shrines to pay your respect to the gods. If you would like to know how to properly pray at a shrine, there’s plenty of videos I know you can find on them. You have to bow 3 times and give money and clap your hands twice; it’s a whole process to learn lol I saw another comment on the 35° is greeting and 90° is an apology ; I would honestly say, it really depends on the situation. Most of the time, if you’re not formally meeting someone, it’s usually just the 35°. It doesn’t make it any less polite, it’s just quicker and easier; if that makes sense. I hope you guys have fun and stay safe! If you have any further questions, I wouldn’t mind if you wanted to ask me!

@@TalesFromOurPocket It definitely wouldn’t hurt to give it a try! People may be pleasantly surprised about how well you know the Japanese customs 😁 also, a tip that’s helped many of my foreigner friends to enjoy Japan to the fullest: if you are unsure of what to order because there are so many options, you can just say “osusume?” (おすすめ)(recommend) and they would be happy to suggest good things for you! (I am unsure how much Japanese you both know so I apologize if this is not new information for you). If you want to take it a step further, you can complete the sentence by saying, “osusume ga arimasu ka?” (おすすめがありますか?) if you’d like, give it a shot! You may be introduced to things foreigners don’t usually get the chance to try!

I am Japanese. If this is your first trip to Japan, there is a Golden Route, which is recommended by the Japanese government. It usually takes you to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and so on. If this is your second or third visit to Japan, or if you will be in Japan for more than two weeks, I strongly recommend that you visit Kyushu, Tohoku, Hokkaido, and Shikoku. The reason is that each region has its own unique sights and specialties that are not on the Golden Route. There is usually at least one castle and one famous shrine in each prefecture. There are also about 5 to 10 special foods, called "B-class gourmet," which can be found at relatively low prices. In Japan, every clan in the Edo period (1603-1867) had a lord who instructed his clan to produce their own specialties. In Tohoku, you can eat Kiritanpo nabe (Kiritanpo hot pot), Gyutan (beef tongue), Zundamochi (rice cake), etc. In the Wagyu region, Yamagata beef, for example, is delicious. If you go to Matsushima, you can see the wonderful Rias coastline. Kyushu has volcanoes and exciting scenery. There are also large plains and some places where horses are raised. There is also a Heian period site called Dazaifu. In Hakata, you can enjoy delicious Hakata ramen and beef hot pot. Hokkaido's snow is powdery and wonderful, and its crab, hokke (salmon), and sea urchin are very delicious. Even the corn will satisfy you. Soup curry and white chocolate are also specialties. Hokkaido also has some Jomon ruins that are not Ainu, but were inhabited long before the Ainu, so be sure to check them out. In Shikoku, you can make a pilgrimage tour and visit many mysterious temples. Many of the temples in Shikoku are very old, about 1,400 years old. You will feel very spritual. Udon noodles are the specialty. You can enjoy making udon noodles at an event. Other specialties are vegetable sushi and bonito tataki. If you like mountain climbing, you can climb Mt Tsurugi. You can see beautiful autumn leaves in the fall. Autumn leaves are beautiful in Canada and other countries, but Japanese maple leaves are smaller and prettier. Please enjoy them.

Since losing my partner to cancer in 2017..I have been watching the Japanese Ch here in the UK. Also watching many many Japanese related videos on KZitem..(particularly the POV walking videos)...And have become extremely interested in the culture and landscape of Japan....I have also become a HUGE fan of a Japanese female rock band...I entered a ticket lottery to win a ticket to see them LIVE in Tokyo in Jan.....But didn't expect to win....But I did!....I have never been anywhere alone....My late partner took care of all the required planning when it came to going aboard, which we only did twice before she passed away...She was very good at dealing with such things like paper work and booking what was needed. Me on the other hand am useless...having never been anywhere till we came together. Now to see the the band I have come to adore..I have to sort a trip to Japan...But have no idea where to start!..I so want to see them and visit a country I feel is calling me....But totally lack any skill to take on such an undertaking......I really need it for a pick me up...Any advice and tips would be most welcome. Thank you.

You won the contest?? That's incredible! You definitely need to make plans. Your partner would want you to come. It's not so hard! And from what I've read, January can be a delightful time to visit. Fewer crowds, plenty of indoor things to do. Take your time and tackle things one piece at a time. Start with airfare, then move to a hotel reservation (just look for something we'll reviewed, then read reviews to see what people say about its location). Read a little about IC Cards. Get a passport (actually, do that first). You really don't need to plan more than these things in order to come here. You've got this! Take it in small steps. ❤️ to you

Bowing is usually for welcoming and thanking you as you go to and from places it’s a sign of respect and gratitude. Also depending on the person the farther the bow the more respect. But usually as tourist in Japan they say thank you by bowing to you or if they are just seeing you it’s like a hello. Just depends on the circumstance of what’s going on. (: hope that sort of helped, grew up in a Japanese household so yeah(:

I am Japanese. I think this is a very good explanation of bowing. As described, bowing is primarily done as an expression of respect and gratitude or greeting. Sometimes We even bow to people we don't know at all (it's common to bow to people we meet on a mountain climbing). Also, when apologizing for causing trouble to someone, we bow deeply. Japanese people bow so much that they often bow when they are on the phone.

They say Osaka is the kitchen of Japan, enjoy all the foods you can! I recently had to cancel my trip last September because I got COVID but rebooked it to November right after. Thank goodness they already eased some of the rules for tourists. I’ll be touring alone around Kansai and I can’t wait for your next videos! The bowing thing is a cultural one, different degrees depends on the amount of respect you’re giving to the other person. A light bow is usually done for greetings, a 90 degree bow I think is when you’re greeting someone you highly respect like a sensei, elderly, or superior in work. And the bow where you kneel is the deepest form of respect. Please correct me if I’m wrong!! Btw, I’ve got a question and maybe anyone can help me with it. I’m from a country where JP still requires visa and my “temporary visitor” expires on Nov.16, my departure flight from KIX is on Nov.15, anyone got an idea if this may be a problem during immigration? Fingers crossed nothing major happens, I've been waiting far too long :(( The intersection at 2:02 is the famous Shibuya Crossing, possibly the busiest crossing in the world. For bowing: it's basically the Japanese form of a handshake. As foreigners, you're not required/expected to return it, but you could give a quick bow in response. Fun fact: the Osaka version of Okonomiyaki (savoury pancake) is different to the Hiroshima one! Also: it's polite to not talk on public transport, as some people might be sleeping I have a bunch of other travel tips for Japan if you have any questions :D

Last time I went it was super busy but based on this video it looks like you guys are coming in contact with more locals.

Eddie, I heard yesterday from someone that went to Kyoto 2 days ago that there were no foreigners in sight. I imagine it is slowly changing, as I started seeing many more foreigners in Osaka today than just one week ago.

Will be arriving in Tokyo first 2 weeks in March 2023, 3 adults, 3 tweens and a 5 month old during our arrival! Delta $620 round trip we had to do it. So excited I planned myself a trip April 2016 to Kyushu, but the earthquake hit and now it’s time to try again! So if anyone has ideas on our budget as far as sleeping arrangements and family places it’s greatly appreciated!

So glad I found this video, or... did it find me?? Regardless, Thank you for all the information and the excellent video shots..... Arigatou My wife and I are so wanting to visit Japan. Over the past few years.... both times over New Yeas, we have been a Host Family here in the U.S., to students that have made the trip to Los Angeles to play and march in the Rose Parade. The kids from Kyoto Tachibana H.S. made the trip in 2017-2018 and we had 3 of more interesting students stay with us of 3 days and 2 nights. This was a few years but we are still in contact with most of them and can't wait to travel the Japan to see them. Looking forward to your video on Kyoto....as that will be our ultimate destination. Thank you again...looking forward to seeing your next video.... Arigatou.

Hi there!, my name is Sol Espinoza (Chile) and I’m going to Japan on April/May 2023, so I’m already super excited watching this video. I’ve heard your question about the bowing in Japan, and if you did not already figure it out, probably you have noticed Japanese people are very welcoming and will always try to help you as foreigner. Bowing also represent emotions, appreciation, respect and agreement. So it’s very common anywhere you go. Hope you are having a lovely time 🎉

@@TalesFromOurPocket You can find store that buy it in station. And they are displayed "駅弁" or "Ekiben" themselves, also you can buy it at department store close to s station. 7-11 is not bad , however department store's or The Ekiben store's one has high quality.

If you dont know, Furama (fire festival) is happening tomorrow at Furama village (starting a 6pm but get there early as its gonnabe crowded). I think that would be great to document ! See you there maybe.

There are various degrees of bowing & whilst it wouldn't be expected of foreigners, it is a sign of respect. If attempting it i would try to match the level they are bowing to you. If it were someone of a higher status , company executive, doctor etc you would notice that the person bowing would bow lower.
@TalesFromOurPocket
