Ahh yes, April 2008. Mariah's E=MC2 was released on the 15th and hit #1 (along with the lead single, Touch My Body) and sold 2.5M copies. Madonna's Hard Candy was released on the 19th and also hit #1 selling 4M copies (the massive tour helped drive sales). Neither album was as inspired or revelatory as their respective hit comeback albums from 2005 (TEOM & Confessions) which both sold 10M+ copies, but a hit is a hit.
@FindingMadonna

The tour was massively successful but it didn't have much impact on album sales. 50% of HC's overall sales came from the first week but there was no ticket bundling. 90% of the sales came before the tour even started and by that point the album had fallen out of the Top 100 and never went back up.

@German Morawski it was poorly promoted, the opposite of Confessions which was expertly promoted worldwide starting with Madonna with her arm in a sling in a telephone booth and performing promo songs around the world....the french tv show Star Academy performance of Get Together wearing that silver dress was fanatic! . @@FindingMadonna Since Madonna pissed off Clear Channel during American Life, she has been semi blacklisted from radio. Since you like Madonna, seriously think you should look at Kyle Minogue and her videography/discography. Her career started nearly at the same time as Madonna's & and many times over the years, Madonna has expressed adoration for Kylie. Minogue originally started out acting and still does, including starring with Jean Claude Van Damme & Raul Julia, as Cammy in "Street Fighter", and portraying The Green Fairy, in "Moulin Rouge". She's put out plenty of great music, but for a video, begin with "Spinning Around" and explore from there.

Rebel Heart was essentially mastered/produced by Kanye West when she was almost finished. You'll see in a few albums time. Hard Candy is a great album though it was only dragged because she used "it" producers of the time. However, if any other pop girl released this album it would've been lauded and celebrated 100%. 💯I really admire how her production team (including herself) didnt distort her vocals and how they kind of brought her sound back to the 80s with a late 2000s twist. Oh P.S- Give it 2 Me is an anthemic bop that rivals Hung Up

Nice reaction video as usual! Overall, it's might be her one album where the producer's heavy handedness took over and she was almost guest vocalist. During an interview around that time she said while working with Pharrell he made her cry. Madonna seems to be one of the few that likes Candy Shop because since then it's been included in all her concerts, with the exception of Madame X. The Devil... is a song she wrote years earlier. Kanye producing Madonna - its coming up. Incredible - some like it but Spanish Lessons was universally panned and considered the worst on the album. Miles Away - about Guy Richie and a sign where that marriage was headed. Personal favs - Dance Tonight and Give It To Me - a total dance club banger with the lyric this at pure Madonna - when light go done and there's no one left, I can go on and on and on. Although a #1 album with a meg hit single, a record breaking tour earning her the #1 female concert tour (and still reigns with that honor) and follow up to her mega-hit Confessions album, its kind of surprising it didn't sell better than it did - maybe it was the horrible album cover. You might want to check out her Rock'n Roll inductee speech from the same era and presented to her by Justin.

The issue I have with this album is the fact that Madonna is such an innovative artist and for this album she wasn't the innovator. So many other people had worked with Timbaland and Pharrel up to this point in time that their feel wasn't unique when Madonna found them. They really just cut and pasted their thing across then added Madonna. It wasn't as personalised as I might have other wise hoped. The songs had Madonna sound like a follower instead. Hard Candy is also the first album since Like A Virgin where Madonna isn't credited as a producer alongside her collaborators. Instead she is listed as a co-producer after the fact. Madonna is credited as the executive producer though showing she was helming the project. However I feel like Justin Timberake or Pharrel to take over lead vocals and release these tracks themselves without Madonna and no one would know the difference and it just isn't right. Madonna has been front and centre on her material and she was over taken here. People could put a face to the names of Madonna's collaborators which wasn't always doable before now. So much of what has been said during this video I can't help but agree with. As much as I enjoy this album I too can't help but feel let down by it. I believe if you aren't a fan of Pharrel, of Timbaland, of Justin Timberlake then you wouldn't be a fan of this album. Simple.

Hey Taylor, I'm a Madonna fan since 1994, and I'm from brazil, so I became her fan at 7, at that transition between the end of 'Erotica" era to "Bedtime Stories". And really, I think "Hard Candy" is not a bad album, only "Incredible" is the song that I really don't enjoy that much. And I'm enjoying since last year your deep dive through Madonna discgraphy. And at the next video it would be nice if you listen the "Celebration (Deluxe Edition)", it would be very interesting if you show us your first impressions on a Madonna greatest hits compilation (this was the 3rd one which follows up, 34 greatest songs plus 2 new singles, the title track "Celebration" & "Revolver" feat. Lil' Wayne), but it was the final releasing of the paternship between Madonna & Warner Bros. at time in 2009. As you know she's got back at WB last year... releasing "Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones" this year, a remix compilation of her 50's 1# at Billboard Club Play Charts on remixed form of the songs (the radio edits of remixes of her past singles)

As a fan, I'm so happy that artists like Madonna exist. She makes music on a level that only very few artists achieve.

“4 minutes” “Dance 2night” “Devil Wouldn’t Recognize You” are my favorite tracks in this album 💿♥️ In my opinion, this album is sweet because of the collaboration with JT 🤫

Review is generous but also on point. Hard Candy is the beginning of Madonna's decline, creatively speaking. It's the first album she made that felt like it wasn't hers -- that she was being "produced" and chasing trends, trying to sound like Justin T as opposed to branching out into her own weirdness. ROL, MUSIC and AL were all super-produced, but all felt like HERS, her vision, and it was personal and you felt it (maybe slightly less with American Life) -- but literally anyone could have made HARD CANDY. It is nondescript, and interchangeable with other artists' albums. It's also the beginning of people chanting "Madonna" on her album, and hyping her like guest artists do on hip-hop albums. With Madonna tho it feels dumb, and in my opinion, beneath her .But this is the period where Madonna starts to lose confidence in herself. She gets major plastic surgery. She wants to be "young". She wants to be in with the cool kids -- which she's recognizing isn't really her anymore. It was a little bit of a gut punch to those of us who loved her for being an iconoclast, and bold, and fearless. I sort of wish a couple of songs from this album (Miles Away, specifically) and a couple from MDNA (Love Spent, specifically) could have been collapsed into a different--better--version of Rebel Heart, and we could have skipped over the other eras altogether.

'Devil Wouldn't Recognize You' originally was a song her brother in law and herself came up with years before (before Confessions) for a musical she was working on that never panned out. Of course, once Timbaland and Timberlake were invited on the track, they totally changed up the production. It's very "What comes around; Goes Around" ish, but it's my favorite song on the album.

As a Madonna fan I feel like by the time she jumped on the Timbaland/Pharrell production bandwagon it felt like it was the beginning of her following the trends instead of her usually setting them. There are some good songs on the record, but I feel like Nelly Furtado’s Loose album feels more like a Madonna record than Hard Candy

I should add that she sold the songs on this album better during the Sticky & Sweet tour

Nelly Furtado, Fergie, Gwen Stefani and Rihanna were the top 1… I miss them so much, their music is still blowing my speakers… Today music is so forgettable and nothing memorable. Even if I find a good song I don’t care for the videos or at least learning the lyrics!!!

This is the fresh urban hipho🍭 C🌐nfessi🍬ns on a Dancefloor of Madomna. Lyrics, melodies, instrumentals... everything is good.🔊🎼🎶🎵 I don t understand why so many people can't like Hard Candy. Candy Shop abd Give It To Me is simple but is pure feminism. Devil Wouldnt ... is pure poetic. Is my third favorite album.
