This song helped a lot of confused youth in the 80s come to grips and identify/understand their own feelings - when they realize they're not alone in how they feel. That was long before internet, social media, and instant access to online therapy and stuff. Mental health/illness was still very much a sore stigma. Great reaction Lilly. Love this song. Like I posted in previous reaction, metal music is like that musical score in a movie - it really enhances the scene, or the challenge for the characters within, it helps connect with the audience by drawing them in, and really augments how powerfully moving the dialogue/lyrics are. I think you would enjoy now seeing how badass these guys are when they perform live. I mean recording in a studio is something even mediocre dudes can do with the help of postproduction editing - but being able to do these stuff you've been hearing LIVE, and hold up the energy, not ever band can do that well, and these guys are a master class at it - a whole new appreciation. I recommend "CREEPING DEATH" (from the same album as Fade To Black) 1991 Live in Moscow. That crowd was EPIC. the story of the concert was that the soviet Union was dissolving, and their iron grip of communism was finally collapsing, and Russians were allowed to truly be free and listen to westernized music and for the first time, American rock bands were allowed to go to Russia and perform for the people there. You can see how thirsty these people were to experience the freedoms we have in America and enjoy heavy metal music.

This was the culmination of the light / lamenting verses and the dark unspoken chorus, speeding up literally and emotionally through to the lyrical climax and release point... but rather than leaving the listener dark and genuinely suicidal, kirk sails in to save the day with one the premier solo sections of all time and you wouldn't dare interrupt that magic with feelings of darkness so the mood passes, but contented for the release. It's called the blues... the talking guitar that expresses emotions... a huge product of black musicians from the deep South in the 40's and 50's... artists like B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Leadbelly... Their playing inspired a wide array of musicians from Eric Clapton to Jeff Beck and Jimmy Hendrix... Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin... Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath... Michael Schenker of U.F.O. ... Angus Young of AC/DC. These were the styles that Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) of Metallica brought to the table creatively... he was a huge Michael Schenker fan, who combines blues and classical music scales. James Hetfield recalled feeling depressed after his favorite guitar amp was stolen on tour... Lars Ulrich (drums) and he talked a lot about death in 1984 when this album was made... and that was a theme on Metallica's 2nd album 'Ride the Lightning'... James was only about 22 when he wrote the lyrics to 'Fade to black'... He said he knew he had something special when he visited his then-gf at her house, and her sister was blasting 'Fade to black' on her stereo system. James had lost his mom to cancer as a teenager, and he had a tough upbringing in a broken home... Tragically, he and Metallica would experience a real death when their bassist Cliff Burton was killed in 1986 while the band was touring Europe - a bus accident in Sweden... Years later, Metallica was alleged to inspire suicides by the song... they replied that thousands of fans wrote to them how 'Fade to black' saved their lives.

In the lyrics yes he went through with it. In reality obviously, he did not. When I was In middle school back in the early 89s music like this was nearly banned due to a group in Washington D.C. known as the PMRC (parents music resource Center), Thankfully that did not happen. Music has this amazing power of empathy. You put on a song and hear an artist you look up to expressing just how you are feeling, you think well he got through it, I can too. I first got into Metallica when I was 15 in 1988 (yes I'm getting old now haha) and a school friend introduced me to the "Master of Puppets" and "And Justice For All" albums. I was already a fan of Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath as well as a few other rock and metal bands, but that was the first time I'd heard something with a harder edge and it led me to other heavier bands. First time I saw Metallica live was 1990 just after I'd turned 17 and it was such an amazing experience. You can't fault their 80's era. The first four albums are classics. I can highly recommend "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Battery", "Creeping Death", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "Blackened", "Harvester of Sorrow", "The Shortest Straw", "The Four Horsemen" and "Seek and Destroy" just to name a few classics after the ones you've already done. Someone in the comments said simply, that the power is in your choice. This statement cannot be stressed enough. I have lived with chronic depression and GAD for decades, and it is ALWAYS a choice, and not an easy one to make. I have to make a conscious decision of what and who (other than myself, most importantly but not necessarily enough at times!) I want to live for with each episode, and somehow have been fortunate enough to find those reasons in turn, and not always without help, or another's perspective. It is my hope that anyone that identifies with this song find those reasons, and talk with others, loved ones, professionals, etc. to help them find those reasons, and help them make those decisions. As alone and isolated as you might feel, you are truly not, unless you choose it.

8:19 It's like you said, when you go through some really hard, depressing times it changes you and it's him saying goodby to who he used to be. One of my all time favorite songs. As a teen I struggled with depression (like many teens do) and a very bad temper. I would listen to Metallica (and other metal bands but mostly them) all the time and it always calmed me and made me feel better. This album and Master of Puppets are my two all time favorite albums. To this day I can't decide which one is #1 and #2. Depends on my mood I guess. Both are masterpieces!🤘

I saw a video recently, and it was a young girl saying 'who is the person when life hits you hard, the one person, you talk to, to make it better' and the video was young men saying 'no one' or 'I have no one' over and over again. It hit me because I felt the very same just before that happened, as men we bottle up emotions almost as its weakness to show them. Mettalica and there lyrics, from Justice for all, Ride the lightning and Master of Puppets (for me) helped me transition through that stage - and they deserve to be the legends of metal they are now for helping so many. Please remember though, the did a song called whip lash with the lyrics 'Bang your head against the stage like you never did before.... make it ring, make it bleed, make it really sore' :D they haven't always been the golden lyrical poets your reacting too!

The great thing about this song (besides the incredible music) is that it’s a song about suicide and it’s literally saved thousands of fans from suicide. There’s countless stories from people who heard this song and realised that they weren’t alone in the way that the felt - it wasn’t the world against them anymore, it was more “hey, this is actually normal and other people have lived through this”. Also my favourite Kirk Hammett solo, brilliantly written, the acoustic guitar is beautiful… it’s got everything. I actually find this song to be incredibly uplifting and moving.

Metallica and this song in particular are the reason I fell in love with guitar as a kid. Kirk Hammett is absolute beast and this song is a masterclass on what a solo should be.

Metallica wrote "Fade To Black" after their equipment was stolen, throwing them into a funk. The band was scheduled to play a show in Boston on January 14, 1984. The truck with their gear got their first, and when their road crew looked for it the next morning, it was gone. They had to cancel the show and postpone a planned tour of Europe. The thieves got Lars Ulrich's drum kit and James Hetfield's custom amp, which had a lot of sentimental value to him. It was under this cloud that Hetfield wrote the very grim lyric. Hetfield clarified that he was never contemplating suicide but was using this dark time as impetus for the song about a guy who does. The idea is that we can sometimes feel helpless when stricken by events outside our control, and while we're all allowed to wallow in our misery, it's up to us to turn it around. Metallica did just that. The Ride The Lightning album was a metal masterpiece and put them in a position to buy all the gear they could ever want.

I love to see new appreciation for Metallica.. I've been a fan of them since 1986 when Master of Puppets came out. Yeah.. the even earlier stuff is awesome! You should check out "Call of Ktulu".. PURELY instrumental, but so evocative.. This is a composition that was made with Cliff Burton on Bass if I'm not mistaken. He was sadly lost in a bus accident, but Cliff was amazing on Bass. I have more.. I believe Cliff was also part of the band that wrote "Orion" for instance.. Super talented bunch way back when, and to this day. R.I.P Cliff Burton

This is by far one of my all time fave Metallica songs cuz of how emotionally raw and on point and masterfully composed the entire song is and the music driving it all together just beautiful and still gets me every time even after decades of listening and being a fan of Metallica and metal as a whole 🤘❤️

As I sit here typing this I have tears running down my face. My wife's brother, a man I love dearly, took his own life literally a week ago. He lost his battle to the voices of severe schizophrenia. This song hits differently and a lot harder now. He lost all hope, nothing left to give. When the voices would take over he would change, the man I knew was gone, and for that moment he was lost. His last words to me was that he was grateful that I loved him and that he could rely on me to sit with him and support him, no matter what the voices told him. Hold on to your loved ones, don't take a day for granted.

Love this song. One of my favorite songs of metallica. But what i love about this song is the solo part. When i close my eyes to sleep while listening to the solo makes me imagine falling to the dark void abyss. This song actually saved me, one band/artists really understands what it's like in a dark realm. Love your reaction.

One of my favourite things about great metal artists is their ability to connect with the darker side of the human experience showing people suffering that they are not alone. This is what a lot of Normie's get twisted these songs are never ment to encourage someone to act out the lyrics they are simply an attempt to provide a non judgmental connection between the artist and audience giving vent to the pain and hope for the future.

Such a great reaction....... hard to believe... :-) Best reaction - best song - very easy! Thanx for your emotional reaction, keep on rocking, Lilly! Over the years I've always wondered what the best Metallica song could be..... One? The day that never comes? Fade to black? And anyway.... what could be the world's best song of all songs for me? Something from Iron Maiden, Metallica, Type o Negative or Rammstein, or........? Since some months it's clear for me: the best song ever for me is Fade to Black (live).

Great reaction! You should check out "To live is to die." It's an instrumental song dedicated to thier first bassest Cliff Burton. It's another emotional song you might like. I've been through some dark valleys in life myself but one good thing about waiting it out is that thier is always a sunrise to great each day which symbolizes a light in us that can fade to black just as the sun fades and sets daily. I just try to be here for anyone that is contemplating what this song illustrates because I've been there and there is a resilient light that uncasts all shadows that never ceases to return as long as you hold on and pray, meditate or just allow time to pass either way, it will shine again as sure as the rising sun.

The beauty of the instrumental sections is that you can find your own meaning there without it having to be connected to any particular lyrics. It should be painting a picture through sound, and emotion. It appears that is the case for you. This is probably in my top 10 (maybe top 5) songs from Metallica, because of the way the lead guitar is working with the harmonies of the other guitar and bass. It's absolutely beautifully written.

Loved the reaction! You're a very wise person, and seem deeply empathetic. I very much enjoyed your analysis of the song! If I could point you in the direction of another incredibly emotional Metallica song I would suggest the song trio of The Call Of Ktulu, Orion, and To Live Is To Die. Or the Unforgiven trilogy as well! The Number Of The Beast by Iron Maiden might be up your alley as well, same with their songs Powerslave, The Prisoner, Alexander The Great (my personal favorite). Thank you for doing this song!

The band members have spoken at times about how many letters they’ve gotten from people, kids, thanking them for this song because it helped them realize they weren’t alone. That makes me feel good that such positive energy could come about simply from this song being written and recorded.

Great reaction. Lilly, your comment at 8 min 20 seconds is what newbies need to understand. Metallica, esp in the early years in the 80's specialized in songs where they put themselves into the minds of people in the darkest places. Fade To Black, One, Sanitarium, Master of Puppets, Trapped Under Ice, to name a few. So the listener is not getting fairy tale happy endings, they are getting the cold dark reality of what is going through a person's mind in those darkest places. FYI, Trapped Under Ice, is the flip side of the coin to Fade To Black. It about someone dying and feeling desperate to live. Both are on the same album. Fade To Black got 100's of people who sent letters to Metallica who were suicidal thanking them for showing that they understand what they were going through, making them feel less lonely and isolated. I really wish viewers would give this context background before they give reaction suggestions for Metallica songs.

I know this is an older reaction and I just stumbled by it. So, in the 80s, all I focused on was the guitar because I was learning and playing. I had the tab book for this album and I was learning to play this song. I knew the song was dark, but I loved the music. I learned to play the song pretty well. I have to honestly admit that your reaction made me discover over 30 years later that the melodies had the purpose you describe. I just never paid attention to it. Thank you.

They are some of the best of their craft. The reason you can feel it is because they are so good and the music speaks to your soul. Words aren't needed, just convey story and reason. But it is the instruments and the musicians themselves that show true emotion.

TRIGGER WARNING When you were talking about how the deceased may have found peace, that hit home. When I was in a mentally bad place and wanted to end it all my mom would always tell me, “What about me? What about the rest of your family? If you were gone that would literally break me, maybe even kill me.” Saying this through tears, mind you. Whenever I am in that spot I hear those words, and every time it works and pushes me out of that.
