You are right, the beat never changed, but by doing both a sitar solo and an organ solo on top of the beat, it sounds active and moving. This was their very first track on their very first album, and it was a surprise huge hit.

Steely Dan is one of the few, rare bands that flipped all expectations of what progressive rock is supposed to be. Instead of writing long, epic songs with heavy keyboards and classical influences, they incorporated elements of jazz and melodic pop into a unique musical experience. In addition to their musicianship, they were also meticulous about their production values in the studio, which is why their catalog is revered among audiophiles worldwide. Great reaction! And you're only beginning. The album 'Aja' is a true masterpiece.

Walter Becker and Donald Fagan were known to, once they got a sound in their collective head had actually been known to occasionally spend a whole day of studio time trying to find it. When the day was done, and everybody went home. they called in a whole new group of musicians to come in the next day and see what they could do with it. Unfortunately we lost Walter a few years back but Donald is still playing

"Do It Again" by Steely Dan and "The Remembering" by YES inspired me to buy an electric sitar for Christmas one year. I haven't played it in years now...I have tingling in my fingers and can't really feel the strings anymore. My sitar, acoustic guitar, Les Paul, and bass guitar are retired now.
@roundtownKen

It is not a real sitar. It is a special (6 string) electric guitar created to sound like a sitar made by Danelectro. It is tuned as a "guitar" so it is easy for guitar players to play... vs. A Sitar, which is completely different- in tuning, strings, bridge, everything. Danelectro made electric basses and guitars and was popular in Britain.
