Christopher Ward, a Canadian song writer, traveled on a bus full of Elvis fans to the 10th candlelight vigil in memory of Elvis’ death. He was taken by the fans love of Elvis. This song came out in 1989/. 1990. Elvis died in 1977.

@@barblessable I listened to this song for probably 10 or more years before I realized it was about Elvis. The voice and music are SO good. I was too busy jamming to notice the lyrics. The song is great in every way.

When Elvis came onto the scene in 1954 at 19 years old, he altered pop culture in music and politics. America was racially divided and Elvis came along and integrated the nation. The government didn't want that and tried to arrest him, even wanted him dead. But the youth both black and white loved him and the rest is history. He brought black culture into white America opening the doors to black music going mainstream. When he died the entire world mourned his untimely death and he became immortalized. That's why he's the king. He pushed the envelope and changed the world in his 42 years of life.

Back in the day (probably starting in the 60s but certainly popular through the 70s), there were paintings done on black velvet. They were sometimes sold out of the backs of vans but also at flea markets, state fairs and other places. There were about a half-dozen that were very popular like one with a Mexican and a donkey, one of dogs playing poker, etc. But the most popular one of all was a black-velvet painting of Elvis. They were very popular and many people owned them (even though some people thought they were tacky).

Alana said in an interview that the title of the song had nothing to do with the paintings, the whiskey or the dye he used. It referred to his love of Black music and his velvety voice.

Like how she rode in on a replica of his favorite palo pinto horse Rising Sun he loved that horse. She is a massive Elvis fan there’s a lot of songs about Elvis out there sometimes we listen and don’t get it. Calling Elvis by Dire Straits, Crazy Little thing called Love Queen, Cry Like Memphis Tamara Walker, Hey Elvis Bryan Adams, The King and I Eminem, and so many others. Some are really good and some are not. TCB⚡️

Black Velvet was also the name of the black dye Elvis used to dye his hair from his dirty blonde original hair color to the black that he loved.

A couple of things I noticed in the opening and ending scenes of this video regarding the little house and the car. Elvis was born in a similar two room 'shotgun shack' in Tupelo MS., and when he first started making money in the music business, it's rumored that he bought brand new Cadillac's for his family and close friends.

I've always loved this song and Alannah's delivery of it but I only learned recently, it was about Elvis, and in many ways, that added information adds even more to my enjoyment of it. Great music never ages. 🙋♂

This song was a blessing and a curse for Alannah. It was her biggest hit and got her noticed but it sounded nothing like anything else she did. People bought her album expecting a southern bluesy sound and instead she was a Canadian pop singer. She had a couple of minor hits after Black Velvet and than faded away. Her next biggest song was probably Love Is.
