The Grammys were not happy about that F.U. pause that Billy took, but he was doing it as a protest because artists accepting awards before this performance were being rushed off/played off during their acceptance speeches. Billy is a real real one. This year's performance was the first time he's attended since (30 years ago btw).

Frank Sinatra had been given a lifetime achievement award earlier in this program. He started recounting his life and path in music to that point, but the band began playing him off halfway through the speech for a commercial break. It pissed a BUNCH of people off that they could be so disrespectful of a legend like Sinatra. Billy was the first performance after the commercial break. When he stopped like that, I was on the floor laughing at his FU to the programmers.

One of Billy Joel's current band members used to sing in a Billy Joel cover band. His name is Mike Delguidice. Billy heard him and invited Mike to join the Billy Joel Band. Mike is a multi instrumentalist and often performs Nessun Dorma from Puccini's Turandot with Billy accompanying on piano. The crowd is confused at first because, let's face it, arias are not expected at a Billy Joel concert. Mike always wins them over. Billy has attested to this before. Mike really is spectacular.

He did that pause and said “Valuable advertising time going by. Dollars dollars” because the year before at the Grammys Frank Sinatra was on stage talking and he was older and the Grammys cut him off during his speech to go to commercial. Billy didn’t like that, so he took that pause during his song to get back at the Grammys for doing that. The song itself was released in ‘93 and was a big hit for him. He’s said that he had this song he had dreamt in his head while in the shower and he didn’t wanna write it, but he kept coming back to it and was like “Damn I have to write this.” Great song. He performs this in every concert and it’s always spectacular.

This song takes my soul to the River!! Billy makes me feel like I’m at a revival meeting, speaking in tongue’s with the congregation. This Grammy performance was when they gave Frank Sinatra a lifetime achievement award but then played him off before he was finished his speech! But Billy took that long pause on purpose as a sort of back-handed sarcastic critical moment just to make a point. That’s what the applause and laughter was for! Great reaction girl ❤

Billy is one of my fave artists of all time... saw him for the 1st of 8 times when I was just 17 in a community hall in Scranton, PA. That was in 1975. He's got intrumental chops, great writing talent, an interesting POV, and got better as a singer over the years as well. He wrote and sang many styles, as you already know.... and is in the American Songwriters HoF, which is a pretty lofty place. I'd also say take a look into Todd Rundgren for innovation, quality and variety. He's done everything from old Philly Soul covers (He and Daryl Hall are old, old friends and collaborators who grew up in Philly on the Delfonics, Stylistics, Spinners, O'Jays, Harold Melvin), to prog, pop, rock, ballads. After starting out with several hits, Rundgren veered away from trying to be a radio artist. He's responsible for hit songs, like Hello It's Me, I Saw the Light, Can We Still Be Friends, Bang the Drum All Day, Love is the Answer... but also many under-the-radar great songs. He's also produced some great bands, like XTC, The Band, Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell, Cheap Trick, Hall & Oates, Grand Funk Railroad's "We're An American Band" album, Badfinger, Sparks, Psychedlic Furs (Love My Way - a great song), and the Tubes. One of his great under-the-radar tunes is "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference", which harkens back to some of those old Philly soul songs. I'd also suggest his version of "Love is the Answer" - here's the link; kzitem.info/news/bejne/jmyruauenZiTdY4

Since you love the backing choir sound so much, if you haven’t already done so, you really, really need to listen to Paul Simon performing with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a group of ten or so South African Zulu musicians who use voice sounds as accompaniment. Paul Simon, in his genius musical composition ability, imagined their voices combined with both modern and tribal instruments to accompany him and produce a sound never before heard in the rock genre. “Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes” and “Homeless” are must listens as you will experience something you could never have even dreamed of. Trust me, and thank me later. 😁❤️ **This Billy Joel song is very reminiscent.

Always love your reactions. But really appreciate your growing appreciation of Billy Joel. Like you've said before, he's not unknown. But somehow despite not being underrated, he is under appreciated. So versatile. He can wander into anyone else's genre and write a song that would fit in well, before going back to his home turf. Then, on to another genre. Deeper understanding of music that allows you to do that and even the ability to write songs that tell a story are hard to find these days in the age of everything has to fit Tik Tok attention spans. He should do Super Bowl half time. Don't think he has. It would be a great show.

As far as song composition and Billy Joel goes, he's so good and so able to do anything because of paying the dues of studying music seriously and in depth, being naturally gifted and...hard work. He works hard at crafting songs with a perfectionism that you won't see in the two minute Tik Tok attention span grade songs you hear everywhere now. It's all that. And he works HARD at it, which is why he's said, he really has to work at making himself get going when he wants to write.

The official video of this song is pretty badass cool. This song has a "caesura", a completely silent pause, that he uses to great effect three times. Each one is slightly longer than the previous one and he jokes about it costing them ad money. This song has a doo-wop feel (oh Gloria). "For the Longest Time" is even better in showing that obvious 1950s influence he grew up in.
