Who she is was a brilliant, intelligent, multi-talented, insightful woman who studied philosophy in college as well as music theory. Her songs were often somber studies of the human condition. She was underappreciated by Capitol Records for years. She wanted to write AND produce her own material and not until her final album did Capitol allow her to do so. Capitol didn't promote it (Patchwork) and it didn't sell and she never did another album. Undeterred, Miss Gentry took her considerable talents to the stage where she found the artistic freedom to create theatrical level musical productions thru the 1970's, at one point becoming the highest paid female artist ever on the strip.

Bobby Gentry is an American singer-songwriter who was one of the first female artists to compose & produce her own material. A lot of her songs were stories. Her biggest hit was in 1967 with "Ode To Billy Joe". Other songs are "Mississippi Delta", "Fancy", "Louisiana Man", "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "Sunday Mornin" (with Glen Campbell) etc.

She also wrote a song called Fancy that’s been covered by many artists notably Reba McIntyre but I believe hers is the best. You should check it out.

Huge song in 1968. It was being played on both Country Western radio and Rock stations. Everyone was talking about this song. "Was it a suicide?" or "was it murder?" Everyone had their own opinion.

She dropped out of the public's eye late 80's, early 90's. She is still alive. Reba reportedly tried to connect w her. We will never know if she was successful while Bobbie is still alive.

A story about indifference we have towards acquaintances. There was much speculation at was thrown off the bridge by her and Bill Joe. The fact is she wrote the particular lyric to indicate that the daughter was closer to Billy Joe than the rest of the family. There is no specific item tossed over the bridge. That was just a lyric to tie the daughter and Billy Joe together. That is from the mouth of Ms. Gentry herself.

She would have fit in great today. Back the you just didn’t have independent art especially a woman. There were some that basically had to do “casting couch” to get airplay on the radio. This song was on the B side of the record

Her real name was Roberta Lee Streeter. She was born near Woodland, Mississippi; her parents divorced when she was very young and her mother moved to California. Bobbie went to live with her when she was about 13, and never lived in Mississippi again. Some people have wondered if this song was somehow autobiographical, but she was too young when she left Mississippi for California.

Bobbie Gentry said the story was about the casual indiifference to suicide. BTW, you do not need to see the TV movie made of this song in the 70s, it is awful. Take my word for it.
