It's amazing to me that true music lovers of any genre, no matter their age, have never heard of the carpenters, who were the biggest U.S. hitmakers of the 1970s?...

Nobody and I mean nobody has ever heard of every artist on this planet, it is impossible, I watch youtube everyday and I'm still discovering new artists, people I didn't know existed. So it isn't a stretch that cvteck hasn't heard of the carpenters, he put Johnny Farnham on the american map, alot of Americans didn't know he existed.

Hell, I was born in 1976 and I don't think I was aware of the Carpenters until my early 20s. I had heard the name, but was too young to remember when they were played on the radio. It wasn't until I met a Carpenters fan in college that I actually heard their songs. I'm certainly not surprised that people younger than me haven't run across them.

Richard composed much of the music they did, but not all of it. This song, for example, was written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols (and they both composed music and wrote lyrics, so I don't know who did what for this song). Richard did, however, arrange all the music they did, and played the piano for all their songs. He is regarded as one of the best arrangers ever (a couple of other highly regarded arrangers are Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and the team of Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA).

The late great Ms. Karen Carpenter was once quoted saying she wished she was as good a singer as she was a drummer. OMG on both. The Carpenters "Close To You" album was the very first music recording I ever purchased in 1970 (yes, I'm that old), and I was blessed to hear the Carpenters perform in concert at Arnold Hall at the United States Air Force Academy when I was a cadet in 1975. Rest in peace Karen.

This song was written by Paul Williams. The first line "talkin' to myself and feeling old" was actually a quote from his mother. She's being talking underneath her breath and he asked her, "What's wrong, Mom?" and she said, "Just talking to myself and feeling old." Classic! Great song.

I had to laugh when you said you're old. I grew up with The Carpenters, so I am REALLY old. The Carpenters were a hugely popular group in the '70's. Every one of their songs were hits. You need to listen to more of their stuff to appreciate their talent. The best way to describe their music is "pure." Karen has a voice like velvet and her brother, Richard, wrote and arranged most of their songs and played the keyboard for all of them. Enjoy The Carpenters journey.

Good reaction CV. Herb Alpert heard Karen's voice on a demo in 1969 and signed her brother, Richard, and her to A&M records. Karen received 3 or 4 Grammys in the 70s and sold over 80 million records by 1982. She was 1975 rock drummer of the year according to Playboy. Perhaps THE best female vocalist-ever, because she commands you to listen as she sings in perfect pitch TO you, not at you, with emotion and enunciation. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, recorded more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. I recommend songs such as, Yesterday Once More, Solitaire, This Masquerade, Need To Be In Love, Hurting Each Other, Only Yesterday, I Can Dream Cant I, Close To You, Crescent Noon, Ordinary Fool, Superstar, A Song For You, etc. KC never knew true love. One of her few friends included Dionne Warwick. 5'3" KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia.

Best female vocalist of all time. She didn’t want to be out front but her brother Richard pushed her to come out from behind the drums. Richard was supposed to be the star, Karen was always supposed to be second to him. This song hits particularly hard when you realize she is beginning her eating disorder struggle which led to her death at 32. Song after song was a hit & they still have the record for most consecutive top 10 songs. Her voice is the voice of an Angel - RIP Karen, you touch my soul still today❤❤

It's not unusual that a young person would not know the Carpenters, because they never get played on the radio anymore (except at Christmas). Karen and Richard Carpenter were siblings. Karen was the VOICE of the Carpenters, and Richard was the SOUND of the Carpenters. He produced their records, wrote the musical and vocal arrangements, and wrote some of their songs (but not this one). Richard and Karen also sang all of the background harmonies themselves. They had a string of hit singles in the early to mid-1970s. If you liked this, then you should check out the rest of their catalogue.

Greatest female singer of my lifetime. Even the great Frank Sinatra said she was on the only singer he would pay to go see. Greatest American group of the 70s. Her brother Richard was a genius at finding songs that could be arranged to suit their style of music and her voice. They put A&M records on the map (Herb Alpert & Jerry Moss). Do Superstar, Hurting Each Other, Solitaire, Make Believe It's Your First Time, Close To You to really hear her 3 octave voice range that was simply pure magic. Sir, you are not old, I lived through the Carpenters. And Press Your Luck when it first ran! Karen and Richard Carpenter were a brother and sister duo. Carpenters was everyone including the band. Purple shirt was the late great Bob Messenger. A triple threat; tenor Sax, Bass Guitar and Flute. They were the #1 American act of the 1970’s. Karen was the voice of a generation/century/ever. Pick which accolade. She was a Contralto (lowest female voice) with a 3.5 octave range. No autotune no pitch correction crap like today. Karen was a fantastic and underrated drummer who sang simultaneously. Phil Collins, Don Henley, Levon Helm we are some drummers who also sang. Very few females then, now The Warning has one, Paulina. I’m sure you are being welcomed to the rabbit hole. Karen died in 1983 at 32 from complications of Anorexia Nervosa. There is a good amount of music all excellent, BTW. They made no bad songs only less great than some others. I’m going to use keywords to give you some drumming greatness. One is a song from 1970 that they performed live. The second is a drumming compilation that give a good example of what Karen did as a drummer. Welcome and enjoy, Richard was the architect of “the sound’ keyboards and arranging and some song writing. He’s still with us at 77. Enjoy! Joe First the song. Choose the video from the Sullivan Channel. Carpenters stuff is rarely if ever blocked. Carpenters Bacharach Medley Sullivan Walter Reed Now the drumming demo. Done by a then 18 year old Carpenters super-fan who now just happens to sing. But first the drum montage. Tori Holub Karen Carpenter best drumming compilation

I don't know how to tell you this, but you are young. I was 27 when Carpenters released their first album in 1970. I had seen them a few times before (from when Karen was 16 to 19). They were in a band that preformed at the Whisky-A-Go-Go that band busted up and Richard formed a band call Dick Carpenters Jazz Trio. She was the drummer and he played keyboard or piano and wrote some of their songs (she did not sing back then). ONE of the things that made them special was having a 16 to 19 year old fantastic jazz drummer. Joe Morelo (American jazz drummer best known for serving as the drummer for pianist Dave Brubeck) was her hero. The jazz standard "Take Five" show cased his talent and she could do the drum work for it. Richard was record producer, arranger, pianist, keyboardist, and songwriter, as well as joining with Karen on harmony vocals. Karen started out as drummer than singer. On all but 1 of their albums the only singers were Karen and Richard. On most of their albums Karen's solo was one take, but they would sing the harmonies from 3 to 32 time and stack them to get what Richard wanted.
