I had the pleasure of knowing Don Williams and to call him a friend; he was a down home countryboy 100%, this song was written and recorded long before the current lifestyles came around, Don died in 2017 and yes he would add in lyrics that fit with the crowd, all of his songs are slow and sweet, Don would play for hours, he had a unique voice and is a man that will be missed. Britt you do such a good job on these reviews that is different from the rest; keep up the awesome work.

I got to meet him a couple times in his later years. Most people didn’t know who he was. But my grandmother LOVED Don Williams, and played his records all the time. And I recognized him immediately. Incredibly humble man.

I was a teen back in the 1970's and grew up listening to him and seeing some of his performances on t.v. specials back then - also was a fan of W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings movie. I rarely get teary eyed and choked up when I hear about an entertainer's death. But I did when I heard Don Williams had passed away.

@@StormyPeak My dad used to pick guitars and listen to Country music when I was young and we lived in Germany in the 70s. Don Williams was my favorite, and my dad used to play some Don Williams' songs when he played on the weekends. Great memories.

@@_viper2c_562 Both of my grand-fathers played banjo. Plus my dad's dad played piano, and my mom's dad also played guitar, and the mandolin. I learned to play piano, mandolin and guitar. So I think I got that from both my grand-dads. I'm a woman, and 60 years old now...my fingers are too messes up to let me play anymore. I did learn the Don William songs, Some Broken Hearts, and It Must Be Love. : ) Both on the piano. I have an auto-harp I would like to learn how to play. I can press on the cord buttons without a lot of pain, and use a pick to strum it. But it needs new strings/pads and I would also like someone to teach me how to tune it. Seems like time and money are always a deterrent for me to get into learning this instrument, though. : ( I hope you got some audio or video recordings of your dad playing. I recently found a reel to reel tape from 1968 of my mom's dad and his band playing some hilly-billy/country music. My grandpa died in 1979, so it was heart warming to hear his voice again and hear him play and sing.

Hi Britt .. so , I will tell you what this song means to me. I had a cousin who was also my best friend He passed away in 1989 in DWI car accident. He was 26 , and I was 23. We were raised on Country Music , but also loved to drive around blaring Rock n Roll , like AC/DC and Van Halen and Bad Company etc. Our parents played Country Music and they all loved Don Williams. I was asked to give the eulogy at the funeral of my best friend. After some heartfelt words , I read the lyrics to this song .... as they described him perfectly, and he loved the song. TY for sharing this one.

A few years ago I was accompanying my brother to a small rural medical clinic in Texas, and as we walked through the parking lot we passed by an old pick-up truck with its windows open. There was a man sitting inside (waiting, I guess, for his wife or someone inside), and he was singing this song a capella. And man, he was GOOD. We slowed down so we could listen to him -- we were the only ones in the parking lot, besides him -- and when he finished we clapped. I never learned who the man was; he might even been Don Williams, for all I know. But whoever he was ... bless his heart!

You got that right. Don Williams has a “hug” of a voice. Same as Jim Reeves. Don Williams is a long standing Member of my music collection. He writes his own stuff and it is beautiful. I was privileged to see Don Williams in concert about 10 years ago. As audiences sometimes do, one person kept calling out one of his songs, wanting him to sing it. Williams said, "You know, I don't normally talk to the audience and tonight I'm feeling really normal." The audience exploded. During intermission I had the opportunity to talk to his opening singer who was from Ireland. He was a good 50 years younger than Mr. Williams and said he was so thrilled to be opening for Don and that he was truly one of the nicest people he'd ever met. I was so glad to hear this because I've always liked the "Gentle Giant" (He's 6'7" tall) and I'm glad to hear you say you like him, too.

"The Gentle Giant." Don just sits there & sings to you. He didn't have to jump around with fire works on the stage doing crazy things. The Country Singers l grew up with didn't need to do that stuff, because they could really sing, with or without music. That's what you get with a great voice! Listen to him sing, "Lord, l Hope This Day is Good."

This is probably my favorite Don Williams song. Such a great message imparted. He sounds exactly the same live as on record. Incidentally, one of my favorite Underdog Artists Marty Brown idolized Don Williams. Infact, the little hat he wears is in honor of Don (my dad's first name). Williams had a great voice, and so does Marty. Check out his song that on title alone should be very intriguing enough "You Can't Wrap Your Arms Around A Memory". Marty is as Country as it gets. You will become a huge fan. Just needs to be heard. He has written many big hit songs for other people over the years. Including Brooks and Dunn's monster hit "Play Somethin' Country".

If I remember correctly, this song was runner up to George Jones' He Stopped Loving Her Today for song of the year. Don was a very quiet person. I took my son to Nashville to see him probably 15 years ago. He was 6 - 7 songs in before he said a word to the crowd. As we were cheering loudly after a song, that word was... mercy. Don Williams, The Gentle Giant, always brings a wholesome perspective. Many years ago I had the pleasure of staying at a beautiful little working farm in Wales for a few days. Note, this was long before the Internet spread all types of music around the world. While there I discovered that the wife of the household was a huge Don Williams fan, which shocked me since I hadn't met anyone over there who seemed to know anything about American country music. I just happened to have his greatest hits tape in the small collection of tapes I had with me, which I could replace easily back in the States, so I gifted it too her and she was enormously grateful.
