This really showcases what a showman & entertainer Elvis was. And he had a good sense of humor. He really liked wearing these white jumpsuits & it became his staple outfit in a lot of his concerts. "Polk Salad Annie” is a 1968 song written & performed originally by Tony Joe White.

Thank you for mentioning this, some people try to say he forgot the words, but in fact in a previous song Sweet Caroline someone handed him the note he even acknowledged it by holding it up and putting it where he pulled it out in this song and read it.

Please check out See See Rider from 1972, from the Elvis On Tour documentary movie about being on the road with Elvis. Several shows were filmed and bits and pieces from each were used in the movie. There's a big thing going on right now with Baz Lehmann, who made the recent huge Elvis movie. He's supposed to be releasing hours of unseen footage that fans have been waiting for for decades. Footage from this movie plus a 1970 documentary called That's The Way It Is. The Vegas footage you've been watching was from that movie. All this footage was sitting in a vault doing nothing and he finally got the movie companies to let him release the footage.

If wantto see more of the backup singers see the Suspicions Minds video. He really interacts with them!
Elvis says "You're right" to the guys at 5:44. It was an apology to the band. The song was new and they were performing it for the first time. It also explains when you see him reading something. It was the lyrics he was reading. RIP Tony Joe White.

Elvis sometimes had problems remembering lyrics, he grabs a note from his man which has the next verse on it, Note: Elvis gives it back with a warm thank you.😍

Elvis liked to have fun on stage & this went straight to the audience. What a show man. Elvis never got the respect he deserved while he was alive.

This video is taken from the film documentary called "ELVIS : That's the Way it Is" (1970) which I highly recommend that you watch because it's amazing and it showcases Elvis being Elvis, however to answer your question about what Elvis was reading during this performance...in the film documentary that I mentioned, Elvis was having trouble remembering the lyrics to "Polk Salad Annie" for some reason, so...on that piece of paper were the lyrics that he was having trouble remembering, which is quite funny if one knows the backstory.

He was so sexy, an unreal performer. Fun fact, one of his backing singers was in fact Whitney Houston's mother. Her name is Cissy Houston and she was a member of The Sweet Inspirations. Cissy is actually 90 years old now and still alive! The Sweet Inspirations only ever had wonderful things to say about Elvis, he treated them kindly, paid well amd was by all accounts a great boss and a good friend to Cissy and the other girls.

This show here was in Vagas and someone threatened to kill Elvis while he was singing on stage. They tried to get him not to sing that night but he said his fans paid to see him perform. So they had the police and FBI in the crowd and luckily nothing happened. His first song that night was you lost that loving feeling, he started off with his back to the crowd . He said if someone was going to shoot him they would have to shoot him in the back. He never understood why someone would want to kill him.
