That's really his father beside James and he had stage 4 kidney decease. He needs a new kidney, but there's no donor. This song is his tribute to his father. That's why James is in tears. But a miracle happened, a distant relative came forward and there was a successful transplant. His father is still alive.

It is indeed @Gavin Holt he poured out his heart to it… it’s very intense, even more so for me after reading the back story. I cried the second time watching the video more than I did in this video 😂

This was written by James after his father was told it was highly unlikely that he would get the life-saving transplant he desperately needed. The good news is that only a few weeks after the song and video (yes that is James' dad) was released a donor was found and thankfully a couple of years on, his Dad is still alive

A lovely and genuine reaction from you. James Blunt and his father were both Captains in the British Army (at different times obviously) and served with distinction. His dad had stage.4. cancer but recovered after a distant relative stepped forward to give a transplant. It's been over a decade since I cared for my father until he passed away and I was in floods of tears. Fabulous song and... yes, that is his father.

Claudette, we might have few things in common from appearances. But after watching several of your uploads, I know you to be a beautiful human who cares about your family and loved ones more than you care about yourself. I am the same. I am so grateful that you would share your reaction to this. You are recording a common, very human reaction in an age where we are discouraged from feeling human. I love and support you. I am you subscriber and I will eagerly await your next reaction video. Never lie to yourself and the rest of us will know who you are.

Hi Claudette, just a little background to this amazing video. This was the first time James had sung this to his father who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer and wasn't expected to survive unless they could find a donor, which they did eventually. James' record company wanted him to use 'Auto-Tune' but he refused because he wanted this recording to be real, and 100% genuine, so the recording was done exactly as we see it. One take. James and his father were both former officers in the British military. I have no idea how he managed to hold himself together for this, I know I could never have done in that situation. Well done you, for holding out for as long as you did. Many others watching this for the first time (like me) had to reach for the tissues much sooner.
