Tracy was the sole writer of the song and she owns all of the publishing rights; so, she has made great money from Luke's release of this song. It was reported that the day after the Grammy's her original song was streamed 635,000+ times.

It's #1 on Itunes. Yes she rejected his original plans of wanting do it as a "new project" which would have consequentially shut her out of any future royalties because of the all the restrictions she had placed on the song. Had she approved it as a "new project" he would have had free range with what he wanted to do with the song. Her unapproval required him to sing the song it's original version which is why he sings it from the female gender stand point. She apparently knows her way around a contract and knows at the end of the day it's all business.

Tracy has long been known to guard her music. You can look up the incident when Nicki Minaj sampled her music didn't get permission then secretly released it thinking that would convince her to agree. That went to court. Tracy is on a do not sample list because she never gives permission. Her music is sacred to her and she knows the business.

The fact that the ONLY change in Tracy is that her hair is graying was amazing. She literally looks and sounds the same. I got chills listening to her. She's about 3 years older than me, I remember seeing perform when in our twenties (she might have been in her early 30's). I have changed so much since then. My hair, my size, my everything! Her smile is still so beautiful! Now I want to hear new music from her. It was such a treat! I am glad I watched it!😊

I love how he looks at her, grinning like a little boy... and then he is silently mouthing the words when she is singing. I saw a short interview with im, talking about how much this song always meant to him. Tracy is beautiful, always has been. She was intentionally androgynous ... read about her life. I'm an old guy (10 years older than Tracy) and I have loved her since her very early days. This isn't the entire performance, by the way,

What you are missing is at the beginning iof the performance Luke was in the light on stage and then the guitar started in the dark on the left side of the stage and the crowd really started clapping until they realized that when the light came on to the left and they realized it was Tracey playing and singing , they went wild. In all my years I have never heard that loud of an applause from the Grammy audience. It was magical. They continued through the whole performance.

Tracy made the BRILLIANT move to take the money she made on her songs and purchase the license and publishing of her own music. Who'd have blamed her if she bought everything material under the sun? Clearly, she understood enough about the business to know songwriting is where the real money is as an artist. Just one more reason to respect her ❤

This came out when I was a teenager. I'm 55 yrs old now. It was good, then...but now it moves me in a way I can't describe. When you're young with no life experiences or scars and then hear a song many moons later it can hit you completely differently. I'm glad younger generations can appreciate older music.

Tracy (born in 1964) made her Grammy debut in 1988 with her amazing first album, which was nominated for 6 Grammys (plus Producer of the Year), It was nominated for Album of the Year and won for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Fast Car" was up for Record of the Year and Song of the Year and won for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She also won Best New Artist. Three Grammy wins in all for the very shy and modest Tracy Chapman. She won again in 1996 for the fine song "Give Me One Reason." Nice to see the reclusive Tracy out and about and enjoying the renewed success of her classic song.
