Keep in mind that this isn't a typical "music video". This is a live tv performance and tv was still b&w on most shows at this time. There were no true music videos until Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody in 1975 and MTV didn't exist until 1981. We only had video footage from live concerts and tv variety shows before that.

Surprise to the live audiences seemed to be rather common back then. A venue would book someone to perform without actually seeing them and it is how Buddy Holly was booked to play the Apollo. The scene is portrayed in "The Buddy Holly Story" movie. Makes sense there was no internet so news of performers was a lot slower than the speeda song would blow up on the airwaves.

I grew up in the 'Heyday' of Radio. Late 50's through the 70's. But in the 60's it was AM Radio we listened to. It gave us blinders to racism. You listened to the music, learned the words and tried to sing along. Hell, I grew up in Texas. I didn't care that the Supremes were Black or the Beach Boys were White. I didn't care. I didn't care that Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Aretha or the Temptations were Black. I didn't care that Roy Orbison, Janis Joplin, The Mamas and Papas,The Stones and yes, The Righteous Brothers were White. I enjoyed the Music. And of course there were a few surprises when finding out later but it didn't change how I felt about the Music. Now where I grew up there were dozens and dozens of just 'Radio Stations' that you listened to and enjoyed the music. Please know that I understand 'progress' was inevitably going to happen, but hiding your little AM battery powered radio under your pillow at night to listen to the music and not wake up your Mom and Dad and not think about what the Artists looked like... Was Priceless.
