This song was released in '75, when I was just 20 years old. There was plenty of inspiration for this tune...the deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin from drugs were still fresh in the collective consciousness. And Paul Rogers is one of the great rock voices of all time. He fronted the bands Free, Bad Company and The Firm...in which he teamed up with none other than Jimmy Page. Free's "All Right Now" and the Firm's "Radioactive" are definitely worth a listen as well as numerous other Bad Company songs.

I was really enjoying watching you two bobbing heads to the beat and the way you both reacted at the same time with a “Yeah” when Johnny’s record went straight to #1 and when they said he’d made the big time at last. You were both smiling. Now, you can really see how music effects people in your reaction to Johnny dying. The rest of the song you both looked on the verge of tears and even though your earlier lively bounce to the beat was still there… just like Johnny it had lost its life. Wow 😢

A Rolling Stone Magazine poll listed Paul Rogers at #55 in the top 100 greatest singers of all time. He was lead vocal in the rock bands Free, Bad Company, The Firm, and Queen and still has an active solo career. He turned down an offer to sing for a band just forming up that later became known as Led Zeppelin. His last record release is entitled Midnight Rose (2023). Some "must-listen" suggestions: All Right Now (Free), Rock-N-Roll Fantasy, Can't Get Enough, Shooting Star, Good Loving Gone Bad, Radioactive, Rock Steady, and Burning Sky are just a few. The majority of his most well known work was with Bad Company (6 studio records). Reportedly, he was not as good a fit with Queen as was originally hoped (2004-2009). I saw him in Virginia Beach 7-8 years ago as a solo act and he still had the goods then, not sure what he sounds like now as he is 74 years old. Thanks for reacting.

An interesting fact - in live performances, Paul Rodgers often opts to leave out the verses that deal with the death of "Johnny". Because the tone of the entire song changes *dramatically*, and without those lines, it flows like a Cinderella Story, and you can tell even Paul likes to blend in with the Johnny character at those times, and the crowd just goes wild when they see him making the obvious connection between his own story and the lyrics.

Check them out if you don't know much of their work. There was a great double album called The Free Story. Just wonderful. They started as 16, 17 and 18 year olds. Successful yes, but so many problems, mainly Koss their guitarist, who was amazing but troubled and left us too young. Bad Company were like a polished Free, but I felt they didn't have that same raw spirit. Almost formulaic in their work by comparison.

This song is about the many Rock starts over the years that couldn't handle the pressure of fame and money etc. Same for many young actors. Some just can't deal with it, and turn to drugs and alcohol to help them cope, but it usually ends badly. Look at Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison (The Doors) and Janis Joplin, they were all Rock Royalty , and died at age 27. They are the three exclusive members of "The 27 Club."
