I caught it the first time as a kid. I always paid attention to lyrics. I laughed every time this played because no one else did. Most thought it is was "the heart brings you back", and would sing it loud. 😂😂😂

@@profanepersonalityYeah I didn't catch it for a while myself. 😅 But to be fair I love music for a variety of reasons and it's not always the message/lyrics. If that's all it took we would go to poetry readings instead of listening to music. We humans tend to like sounds that make us want to move. It's a brain thing. Despite musicians that think themselves "too deep and above that" they're not. They're just tantruming against a simple human thing that doesn't have anything to do with their want to express their off the wall thoughts and feelings, which is a different way to express one's self with music and not as relatable depending on the thing they're trying to express. Doesn't make them better than anyone of us that just likes to move to the beat.

This song is brilliant. Blues Traveler call the listeners out for enjoying their song because of the hook it has, even though the song doesn't mean anything. Simple but very inventive. My favorite song they did is still But Anyway

They used the chord progression from Pachebel’s Cannon D for this song, probably the most”hokiest” piece of music ever composed as well as copied or used in other songs. Which is exactly why they picked it for this song and the lyrics, you really need to read the lyrics to really appreciate the genius of this song.

I saw these guys a while back and it was an unusual show. They played straight through until the end of the show. They never interacted with the crowd, or said anything. No pauses in between songs, just one song bleeding into another. When the show was over, he said thank you and left the stage. No encore either.

The lyrics definitely thumb the nose at the music industry, a masterpiece in itself, but the real trolling happens from the music standpoint because it's Pachelbel's Canon in D, which has been used in so many songs. Even the harmonica solo is very close to the original piano solo. The chord progression has been overused in the industry because of the emotions it brings and the fact that it leaves things unresolved, as far as music theory is concerned. In other words, builds tension. The most recent use of Pachelbel's Canon in D that I can think of is "Memories". Give a close ear to the original and copies! It's genius that John Popper did this!!!

I was thinking the same thing, and then another thought occurred to me. What if they read up on the meaning of the song beforehand and did something very Meta. They just nod their heads to the beat, enjoy the music and everything, say the song sounds really happy, and have zero focus on the lyrics -- on purpose. Their "reaction" is to troll their audience by acting like the very target of the song's lyrics.
