Bull riding started off as a competition between ranching teams that would break horses and then transitioned over to best each other at hanging on to the back of a bull. There’s a lot of rules in rodeo, but the main ones are, 1) a rider must be on top of a bull for 8 seconds for it to qualify as a ride. 2) a rider must always have one hand in the air and will be disqualified if he touches himself, the bull or anything else with his free arm. 3) the 8 seconds do not start until the bull’s shoulder’s break out of the chute, meaning it has to buck out once or twice before the time can start. 4) if the bull does anything that may impede the rider to stay on that is unfair (say falling on it’s side, hitting the gate or bucking chutes on it’s way out causing the rider to get bucked off, etc) a re-ride is given to that rider if he decides to take it. It’s scored from 0 to 100 points and is divided between the rider and the bull. 50 points is the max for both. These points are determined for the bull: depending on it’s speed, ability to spin and change directions and overall difficulty to ride. Where as the rider is scored depending on how fluent his movements are according to the bull’s movements and how they counteract them. Style points are awarded for spurring the bull and making the ride look better. It’s almost like a dance. When a rider get’s hung up, it means his riding hand is stuck in his bull rope. That happens because when you’re getting strapped down to a bull, you must put your hand through a handle, and after it is tightened in your hand you take a wrap (get the remainder part of your rope and wrap it around your hand) and climb over your hand. Left hand riders must always try to get off on the left side so they’re hand can open up easily, and vice versa. When you get off on the wrong side your arm turns over and your palm faces the back of the bull, this makes it almost impossible to open your hand and get out, that’s where the bull fighters must step in and try and pull the tail of the rope to get it loose. For a lot of riders it’s their way of life, that’s how they make their living. In my case I do it as a hobby but hope to some day soon make something bigger out of it. Edit: the bulls are never agitated on purpose, bulls are naturally aggressive. What is used to impulse the bull to buck more prominently is a flank rope that goes tied snug on their hip, not theirs genitals. It’s like having a lose belt on your waist that you are trying to get off. The flank rope is made of soft cotton and does nothing to irritate the bull other than to impulse it to buck.

Awesome description. Also to add, a common misconception is that the bulls are treated bad, and starved, etc. to make them more aggressive which is not the case. They are million dollar athletes and are treated as such with the best food, housing, vet care, exercise, etc. some are actually docile according to some documentaries I’ve seen and they are aware that this is their job.

Naturally aggressive is right!! Some bulls will run a 1/4 mile across a pasture to get a chance to stick a horn in you. Others just like to smell the roses and hang with the females.

It's a natural thing, that no bull is going to want anything on its back.. And they are not hurt. But the ropes that is put around them, make's them angrier.. And the score, come half from the rider and half from the bull.. and only if he makes the 8 second's.. And those men down there with the bull and rider.. Maybe the owner of the bull.. And what they call the clown's.. And other riders.. And the men that may help them mount the bull, and also usher the bull from pen to gate.. Hope that helps some.. 🐂

And to your question, yes it can happen every ride.. But if they make a score..the more than they earn.. Some don't earn anything when they don't make the 8 second's.. if they do get a good score.. 🐂

When I was growing up in the 70s, bull riders wore no protective gear. After a couple of deaths from punctured lungs, the protective vests became required. After several deaths (and brain traumas) from bull skull on human skull hits, the helmets and face masks became more common; but are not required.

PBR = "Professional Bull Riding" (The most basic of basics follows.) 1. You must stay on the bull for 8 seconds to be eligible to score points. 2. You can only hold on with one hand. If your second hand touches any part of the bull, you are disqualified. 3. Max points are 50 for the bull, and 50 for the rider. 100 points possible. The riders cinch a rope around their hand and the bull, effectively tying them to the bull by one hand. This rope has a "quick release" knot of sorts. Sometimes the release malfunctions and the riders are dragged along because they are unable to release their hand. In particularly rare and extremely dangerous situations, the spurs (worn on the heels of the boots) can get tangled up in the various ropes and straps on the bull, and the rider can get his foot caught up, and be dragged around by his foot/leg.

Thought you'd never get here. America is the home of crazy, dangerous sports, and you're just seeing the tip of the iceberg of dangerous American sports. The rider needs to stay on the bull for 8 seconds and he needs to have one hand raised the entire time. The bull has a rope tied around its lower waist and in reality he's trying to buck that rope off, although the bull is well aware that there is a rider on his back.

I rode bulls while I was in the United States Marine Corp. It was so excilarating any tension you had before the ride , you have non afterwards. If you stay on for 8 seconds you can be scored. The score is based on the difficulty of the bull. And the flair and talent of the rider. My last ride was at the California Expo. I drew a bull called "The great white hope he was a spinner. It was a fun ride.

Spanish bullfighting - weaken small bull by stabbing it and kill it afterwards. American bull riding - find the biggest strongest bull, treat it like royalty then breed it afterwards. I read a paper on European risk aversion contrasted with American risk taking. It hypothesized that it's connected to those that assumed the risk of fleeing Europe and crossing the ocean (a HUGE risk at the time) possessing a genetic trait that was passed on to their descendents while the risk aversion trait of those that remained in Europe was passed on to their descendants.

Ok I have not read any of the comments, so forgive me if I am repeating anything. I myself was a Bull rider back in the 90'ssoI will give you a quick lesson. Objective is to make it for 8 seconds without falling off, you can only use1 hand the fee hand is used as a counter balance, even though it looks like it's just Flailing around the rider is trying to throw his upper body in the opposite direction of the Bull, next the bulls are bread special for the sport but as added insurance a rope is tied around the flank ( stomach just forward of the hind legs) the animal will find this annoying and kick at it trying to remove it (it does not hurt). You said something about Kevlar, the vest that you see them wearing is Kevlar some also have ballistic armour plates, most don't as it limits your movement. A lot of riders use helmets but it is not a requirement. As for why folks get into a sport that is so dangerous that is simple anyone can go to a Rodeo pay the entry fee and having a chance at glory and then there's the adrenaline rush when you're in the shoots getting ready your heart is pounding so hard that you think it going to jump right out of your chest all the world goes away your mind starts to race about what you are about to do then you nod your head and the gate is Flung open and then your body takes over because you don't have time to think the Bull is doing this so I'm going to do that if you make the buzzer after 8seconds and you manage to jump off and walk away you get this feeling of being10 foot tall and bullet proof

Have to see it in person... Rode when I was much younger - one of the most exhilarating things. Most memorable ride - a bull named Satan's Spawn - never made it to 8 sec on him - despite drawing him 3x - longest was just shy of 4 sec. Still longest 4 sec of my life.... It's you against 2000Lbs of pure muscle, meanness, and horns - tests your bravery and endurance. Despite what the announcer said "These bulls do not intentionally try to hurt the cowboy" - I can tell you - that's utter horsecrap and said for the newbies in the audience. Some of these bulls go after the cowboys... Bodacious - the most dangerous and successful bull in the rodeo circuit was prematurely 'retired' before he killed someone or seriously injured them. That bull was incredible and a legend - some cowboys even bowed out when they were matched with Bodacious - wanting none of him.

Man besting beast has been the theme of many a sport since civilization began. In this sport, the beast wins more than 70% of the time. While there is $$$ and even some fame, the adrenaline & being in sync with the beast is truly the motivation for getting on the back of a bull. Without the consequences being so brutal, the challenge wouldn't be so rewarding. It is a great sport, and bull riding is a rite of passage in many a county in multiple States of the US, though admittedly the bull I rode as a teenager was timid compared to these beasts, but my reward was just pride.

The tighter circles the bull spins and then changes directions make a better score. The more time the bull spends with his feet off the ground also increases the bull score. In 87 at the Montana PRCA circuit finals I saw a guy put in what is called a suicide loop around his bull rope hand. He got hung up, drug around, freed, then the bull came back stepped on him then pushed him into the ground. The cowboy passed the next day after surgery.

FYI we breed and train our bulls for this, just like they train either a jumping or racehorse to run fast or calmly and peacefully jump obstacles. They're able to start unleashing their power on us riders as soon as they hear the gate latch opening. Another explanation for what they do in the arena has a little bit to do with the rope that is tied just in front of their back legs. We call it a flank strap, and it's just a soft cotton rope that goes around the bull's hips in the exact same manner you would put on a belt. Once the bull is getting ready to be put in the chute, or the box with the gate, they'll put that rope on but leave it loose. But once the rider is getting set in the chute, one of the bull handlers will take that rope and further tighten it around the midsection of the bull to tell him that it's game time, and the bull does indeed know that it is time to perform. The only real purpose of the flank strap is to further enhance the bull's performance motion and encourage him to kick higher, buck harder, and overall perform better. It's not designed to hurt or cause any sort of harm to the animal nor does it.

Bulls buck mainly because they are wild and they don't like people on them and they don't like those straps around them. I have seen times when they throw open the gate and the bull kinda saunters out. Most of those times the rider is given a different bull. Rider and bull are paired up by chance, like a lottery. better bulls means better chance of scoring, but also means a better chance of getting bucked off or hurt. High scoring bulls earn lots of money for the owner, and the prize bull is often the most spoiled animal on the farm. Stud services can also earn the owner plenty of money when another breeder wants to try and get a prize bull calf from him. The more the bull twists, turns, jumps and bucks the more he will score because he made the ride difficult for the rider. People do this for the bragging rights and the adrenaline. And it can pay pretty well if you turn out to be a decent rider. To see what a Pro looks like I highly recommend watching : The Best Bull Rider of All Time: J.B. Mauney.

All the Cowboys wear safety vests now 50 years ago we did not have them when I was a champion bull rider. They put a flank strap just in front of the bulls hind legs. Tender part and the bulls trying to kick it free.

Brother you was watching a compilation of bull riding accidents this isn't the norm they try to ride for 8 seconds and dismount then the technical aspect is judged. Now I don't know all the rules but when a ride goes right it is awesome to watch

There's a points system. The rider and bull receive points. There is also big money involved for both riders and bulls. It's America my man, that's the way we roll. Most of our sports are ruff and tumble sports. We very few wimps in the US
