I introduced my husband to the MCU, he ended up loving them. We have the new Black Panther and Thor left. Then I introduced him to the X-MEN universe. They were a success too. We did both in chronological order. I think you should do them in chronological order to get the storyline/backstory your bf craves.

So when Iron Man came out no one knew what the MCU would become. Hard core fans HOPED it would lead to an Avengers team up movie if they were good, but for most people it was just another super hero movie. The reason that the Spider-Man and Fantastic 4 movies were not part of all this was the rights. They were all Marvel Comics characters but various movie studios (Sony and Fox) had licensed out the A-List characters of Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Fantastic 4. The Avengers line up (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk) were all consider kind of B-List characters and just hadn't been picked up. This was the first time time that Marvel tried their hand at making their own movies instead of just licensing out the rights. This situation will come up again after Marvel is purchased by Disney and the house of the mouse looks to expand further. I am surprised that movie 'snobs' and fans of the independent stuff don't give the MCU a lot more credit. There is nothing else out there that tells a long form story over the course of dozens of movies. Even something like Star Wars is a couple of trilogies, which is a LOT! But it doesn't hold a candle to this type of story telling. But... it became big, so people love to hate on it. A fun fact: The engineer who Stain was yelling at about Tony Stark being able to make this in a cave with a box of scraps... that is the kid from A Christmas Story, Ralphie. He was a producer on this movie and made an appearance. Snob was a good description... I completely disagree on the assessment of the acting.

1:00 "The first two Tobey Maguire Spiderman?" "That's Marvel but that's not MCU..." Yes it is! It will be relevant before "No Way Home" In fact, after "Multiverse of Madness" all the X-Men movies are connected now too.

When my husband introduced me to the MCU I liked some of the movies on their own, but it wasn’t until the first Avengers movie that I decided I was hooked! I’d never seen like that and it gave so much more depth to the characters. Can’t wait to see Stephen’s reaction to that one!

I have ADHD and literally every thought Stephen had was what I was thinking 😂 my mind can’t rest so I will pretty much predict everything that will happen, so I tend to like horror or weird twists so I don’t get bored. I think he is pretty accurate with the rating, but I definitely see David’s side because this movie was so influential to western media at this time. This was fun to watch, David!

Needed a good start to my day and this was an excellent "MCU Journey" launch. What's it called when things come together like that...? One... Two... Three... "The Bermuda Triangle." Enjoy the amazing mind of Stan Lee. The father of advanced comic social issues, science and politics, but most importantly hero vulnerability.

Stephen's voice gives James Spader vibes and I'm here for it. Edit: I am also not a traditional horror fan, however Hereditary was very good. No gratuitous gore, and a storyline that was interesting. Midsommar was also very freaking good, even though the gore level is definitely upped. However, it is nowhere near a Saw or Hostel level imo.

2:42 "I think independent films tell more interesting stories" Before Marvel's massive success most superhero movies WERE indie movies. DC had been owned by Warner Brothers since 1969 so Batman and Superman were big studio pictures, but through the 90's, hits like The Ninja Turtles, The Crow, and Blade and were all made by small indie studios. Marvel was going bankrupt and sold a lot of their most popular characters off to big studios, so Spider-Man is made by Sony and The X-Men were made by Fox, but MCU started out self-produced by Marvel with no studio help. Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk were a indie movies, Marvel wasn't bought by Disney until 2009

I love marvel movies, but part of what's nice about them is that you know exactly what's gonna happen. You can go in, turn you brain off, and just have a good time. I like other types of movies too, but these are nice when you need something mindless.

Maybe watch a Thor movie, they are more campy and fun. Also, fair warning David - Jordan Peele who wrote and directed the horror movie “Get Out” said that “Midsommar” was “atrociously disturbing”. So good luck if you guys watch that! Lol. Loved this review, you two are super cute together!

David, I could see your face fall at 24:35 when Stephen said you won’t get good acting in these movies…. I really think good acting is relative to the type of movie it is. Stephen seems to be more into the darker/thought provoking movies and you’re more into blockbusters. Both can have good acting; it’s all dependent upon the character being played. I think Downey Jr nailed the narcissism of Tony Stark perfectly. Also, I think a a24 film like Lady Bird covered teen angst well with Saoirse Ronans portrayal of the teen. Both indie and blockbuster good acting can coexist, it doesn’t have to be one or the other.

I like the MCU cuz I like the action and stuff when they go crazy. BUT I agree with Stephen, he's so on point with everything he's saying about acting and connection, you should know by now that we don't get that from the MCU only for some exceptions, but that's not why you watch these movies, you watch them just for fun and to get your mind off things. I'd be very happy if you watched some A24 and some horror hahaha I wanna hear more of Stephen explaining cinema and his interpretation of those films

He is pretty much bang on in his analysis. But 6.3 is very generous. It is a 3 at a push. These films are essentially long adverts for children's fancy dress costumes and nothing more. Although I do think it is unfair to watch it and then slag it off as myself or Stephen are clearly not the target audience and Marvel films bring a lot of people a lot of enjoyment. They are what they are, a bit like McDonalds is to food. Capitalist filler. In an unrelated note, Stephens speech pattern, voice, and accent remind me so much of Allen Ginsberg., hopefully we see lots of him on this channel :)

I'm with your BF on this. He's right that no "acting" is required - it's not "acting" so much as what Mary Astor called "look at me being". It's a term she used when she played a more of a "what" character rather than a "who" character, and that's exactly what this movie is. A lot of effects, a lot of "look at me being" and a lot of sound. It's a through-and-through action movie. There's nothing wrong with action movies. They're just a type of porn except everybody keeps their clothes on. More or less.

He is going to really hate Thor. I am not familiar with many Indie movies but from what he's said about the types he enjoys then he might have liked The Blair Witch Project if he ever saw it. In its day it was cleverly done and many people tried to make something similar. The only one that I think came close was Paranormal Activity.
