EVERYONE in this film brought their A game for it and Michael Clarke Duncan was robbed that Oscars season. YOU just became my new favorite reacter though because you were ON it with the symbolism. I've seen this film, I think, something like 20 times since it came out when I was working at a Blockbuster video way back when (and I've read the book twice) and you caught something that I missed for all these years: that John was singing "I'm in heaven" from that movie before they pulled the switch. Another thing I never thought about until you mentioned Mr Jingles being a metaphor for something but...I wonder if part of it was sort of the way Jesus Christ (John Coffey) used to heal the lepers (Mr Jingles being a mouse which is an animal considered vermin/a pest)?

People seem to be so upset bc they don’t save him. But it’s not what he wanted. It just wasn’t. He was so tired. He said “Why would you do such a foolish thing?” When Paul asked him. And “you tell God the Father it was a kindness you done”. And believe me, it hits everyone just this hard. Because he was so very kind and gentle and innocent. But it truly is what John wanted. 😢😢😢😢😊

I understand and see your point of view and I do empathize, I couldn't imagine having a barrage of emotions like that everyday, but as the saying goes "All it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing." Now I understand it was Jon's choice to die but Paul also has a choice to make as well and if I were in his shoes, I would choose to fight for his life and let it be known that Jon is innocent. It may be Jon's choice but I would choose to not participate in the taking of an innocent person's life and I would fight to my last breath for that life. It may not be easy but it would be the right thing to do.

John just wanted to go home. And another thing his death accomplished was to save the family who lost the two girls. If they knew it was the transient who they'd briefly housed and fed in exchange for honest work, it would have destroyed them. The father likely made that decision, he would not have forgiven himself and likely turned to drink. The mother wouldn't have forgiven him. The family would have fallen apart, the farm would have failed, the remaining children's world exploded. Sometimes 'truth' is too much for those not prepared for it, so a lie is a kindness.@@naiaddore1797

Just found you through this movie and working my way through your movie reactions. I’m in the middle of watching you watch Shawshank. In that reaction you mention wanting to know what the other inmates did. Not sure you do, but it’s in the books, which I’ve read. The first man to be executed, Bitterbuck, was drunk and killed a man over a pair of boots. Del raped and killed a young girl, tried to cover up her murder by burning her body, and ended up burning down an apartment building that killed 6 other people. They purposely left it out of the movies and I can see why. It would have shifted the feel of the movie drastically. Also in the book, Dean (the young blond guard) was transferred to C block after John died and was attacked and killed by an inmate 6 months later.

I don't know much about mice, but I know that rats live to be about 2-3 years. So Mr.Jingles is around 60 and that will mean Paul will live to be around 2000 years. The symbolism of the mouse is hope and humanity. Two things that Percy does not understand and that's why he hates it. Such a well crafted movie. Everything comes together, and all of the actors turns in a pheonomanal performance
@chris...9497

I see the mouse being more like innocence and vulnerability. I think Percy's reaction to the mouse is for two reasons: -Percy has total power to eradicate it, in the most abhorrent way possible. -Percy only sees the ugly and unacceptable in other living things, whether it's a mouse or a prisoner, and he takes that as license to do what he wants with them. Percy is waging war with a world that treated him badly as a child. Percy also has an unforgiving nature, leaving him bereft of any empathy. No empathy = sociopath.

1. YOU WILL CRY😭😭😭😭 2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production, so his part was done later. He also played Reverend Alden on "Little House on the Prairie". 3. Hammersmith was not a good lawyer. (most likely a racial thing. It was 1935 South.) 4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row. 5. This movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (MCD)😇 and Best Cast but unfortunately neither won.😭😭 6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse: The Langoliers. Patricia Clarkson played Margarat White in King's remake of Carrie". Needless to say, it was a much different part. 7. Goof: Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream. I know it' just for the movie because of the length of the execution scene. 8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegan and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill. 9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. BTW Kudos to Doug Hutchison for the great job of playing Percy.👌EVERYONE hates him. 10. John also rescues the other patients at Briar Ridge. 11. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are about the same height as Michael Clark Duncan (RIP). They used planks, a small bed and smaller chair along with trick photography/angles to make John look taller. 12 The scene where John takes Mr. Jingles for safe keeping before Del's execution, they used a real mouse, and it pooped on Paul's shoulder, and he brushed it off. 13. Now we know what the "day old is fine" dry toast is for. 14 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced. the GREATEST MOVIE EVER. (GOAT) 15. 4 words for you: Stephen King. You're WELCOME!

Great reaction excellent analysis... Green Mile breaks everyone. I think Jingles was more a vehicle of conveying Paul's punishment and a comic relieve. Paul was about 44 (the period between Jesus crucifixion and his ascension was 44 days) when he executed John Coffee (the same as Jesus Christ but spelled differently). At the time of the movie he is 108 so the execution was about 64 year ago (64 is in important number in Christianity). Normal mice live about 2 years... so say he was 1 year old in he was now 65 years. So he get to[ live 65 times his normal age. If Paul got the same equivalent at an average human lifetime of 70 he is looking at 4.550 year sentence (unless he gets killed) unnaturally.

If you've seen this and read the book enough times as I have, and aren't so overwhelmed by what's happening on top of the action, the ideas behind the actions start to be clear. John Coffey is always obeyed. He's just so soft spoken and patient it's easy to miss. And once he's made up his mind to do something, no one interferes. With that in mind, watch it again. Sometimes they start to object to something but then just kind of fall back. With those abilities alone John could have had any number of ways to change the outcome, but chose not to stop what was happening. He gives his reasons, and they're sound. And I'm with Stephen King on the idea that if Jesus were to come back we'd just kill him again. Especially the people who believe he is coming back. They wouldn't be able to recognize him.
