Just to let you know that wasn't just a badge of honor. That is the Medal of Honor. The highest decoration the military can award. So, Mr. Miyagi basically went above and beyond the call of duty to save lives at risk of his own life. As you can tell Kreese and Mr. Miyagi are polar opposite military veterans. Everyone needs a Mr. Miyagi in their lives. What I love is at the end is when Daniel says "We did it." Not I did it. :) I agree with you though I liked both movies. Mr. Miyagi - Pat Morita was amazing...RIP.

What they don't directly say, is that Miyagi was fighting for the USA in WWII, while his wife was being held prisoner in a Japanese Interment Camp. Basically, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese peopke all over the US were rounded up, taken from their homes and jobs, and imprisoned like criminals, just due to their national origin. Their homes and property were seized and sold off. The conditions in the camps were terrible. Miyagi's wife died, because the doctor had gone home, and wouldn't come back to attend to her.

I'm glad they included it in his backstory. It adds depth to the movie without being too in your face. It's a chapter in American history many people don't know about. Would have been easy to leave off for fear of turning a feel good movie too dark.

Problem with the newer version is because it's not even karate in the movie it was kung fu. They basically just used the name because it would sell better. They just basically took someone else story, changed the type of martial arts and changed the country. Many fans hated it before even seeing it because it was not even karate. It's like calling a movie the Texas chainsaw massacre and using a knife or gun instead of a chainsaw. Don't call it karate if it's not. Kung Fu Kid would have better title and wouldn't have bothered as many people.

The reason the new karate kid movie was made in China was to appease Chinese audiences and to make Jackie Chan the star - again to draw Asian audiences. This is also why Jaden Smith and Taraji P Henson were chosen for the other roles, because Black people are extremely trendy in Asia. There have been a lot of movies made in the last 10 years that are geared heavily toward the Asian market
@angelomaurizio1668

The part of Mr Miyagi was played by Pat Morita. Casting didnt want him for the role simply because he was a comedian. The story went the head producer saw his audition tape and hired him of the role. When the cameras were off, he was the comedian everyone knew but when the cameras were on, it was a role only Pat Morita could play. All of Cobra Kai, Ralph Macchio (Daniel) and Pat Morita were trained by Pat Johnson the referee we all saw in the tournament. Darryl Vidal who'd played himself played a huge role in the movie. He is first seen defeating the big Cobra Kai dude @ 40:47, then fights Johnny in the semi final. Vidal also played the role as Mr Miyagi's stunt double as he was responsible for the fighting scene near Daniel's apartments after the Halloween party. Vidal is also the creator of the crane kick, he was seen standing on the stump as Mr Miyagi performing the kick. Vidal is still teaching karate til this day. Dutch - the bully cobra kai that approached Daniel in the locker room is the son of an American bad ass in 20th century cinena in Steve McQueen. Dutch was played by Chad McQueen. If you are planning on getting into the Cobra Kai series, I believe I speak for everyone when I say you must watch all Karate Kid movies because if you dont, you will miss alot of references in the Cobra Kai series. Karate Kid II (1986) will go from the development friendhship between Daniel and Mr Miyagi to featuring Mr. Miyagi's origin.
@jdovma1
Ай бұрын
Karate Kid II and III are definitely both worth the watch. And I would go through those two before you get into Cobra Kai, just because you get all of Daniel and Mr Miyagi's relationship leading into it. They're not necessary for the first season, but if you wait to watch the others it winds up kind of lessening the surprises throughout the series because you kinda know when they're coming. Do the whole trilogy first, and the rest comes naturally and more spontaneous. You will love this entire saga.

⚠ Fact Check: Freddie Fernandez is The Original Antagonist of the Karate Kid If you read the novel book he was the one who set Daniel up on purpose to go after Johnny's Ex-Girlfriend (because he knew she was Johnny's ex gf). So that he could see who's Karate was better (once Daniel Told him that he knew Karate when they met at the beginning) *The line that conforms it: in the book is Freddy saying: "After Daniel losses on the beach against Johnny, Freddy's friend says "You Sure Pick Great Friends, Where Did You Find This Guy" Then... in the book *Only Freddy says " He Told me he knew Karate" then they walk away..

What a pleasant surprise MJ. I am happy with your reaction and enjoyment of this iconic movie. This along with Back to the Future are the definitive films of this era to me. I would encourage you watch the other films in this series as well as Cobra. Part 2 was the strongest sequel of this film, and Cobra Kai helps redeem many of the weaker points throughout the franchise. Pat Morita who played Myagi was known as a comedic television actor at the time. The producers wanted Mako who was another Asian American actor to play the role. I’m happy with the final choice, which led to an Oscar nomination for Pat Morita. He should’ve won, but that’s another discussion. They don’t make ‘em like they used to, and I am glad you’re allowing yourself to experience. On a final note, the Jackie version was originally intended to be a remake. I always felt that the movie stood apart from the original with many of its stark differences. They’re making a new movie which will retcon the Jackie Chan version and merge with the original continuity. This is expected to come out next year.
