Best part of the film for me was the audio and sound mixing. I have a pretty stellar setup and it bounces all around at certain scenes. Plus that foghorn…. And yes, your editing is stellar. In particularly felt it was a good touch to gradually transition from BW to color at the end.

I like that this film is open ended, and allows the viewer to draw their own conclusions. My take away from this was William Dafoe is Neptune, or some form of oceanic god who lives to toy with humans. The log book with all the other lighthouse keepers, the endless amount of time that seems to have passed, the dallying with sea creatures….it’s like a non human god playing house with humans like it’s a board game, and when he looses interest, he procures a new victim to play with.

The gull with one eye is the old keeper from before tom Howard and the other gull is Winslow. Winslow fell into a body of water and was swallowed up by logs and technically died at sea, that’s why winslow keeps seeing a dead gull in the water as a reference to winslow being drowned by logs.

I knew Defoe could do this, but Pattinson... he certainly exploded the "that Twilight guy" dismissal here. I've been told that, if one studies the relevant mythology and pschoanalytic theories, all can be explained. I've never bothered. The movie hypnotizes me and then swallows me. The sound of that never-ending foghorn remains cut into my soul with dread. This movie is stunning.

this is my interpretation, I tried to keep it as coherent as possible. this film has a traditional structure despite all the chaos and abstract stuff happening. Pattinson is the protagonist and his desire is the lighthouse, plain and simple, it's the motivation for everything that will happen. in his desire to go upstairs, he has idealised the experience, he has gone to such lengths in the way he is expecting the lighthouse to be that he believes a goddess of the sea to be there, the mermaid, curiosity took the best of him. he faces a set of challenges, all of them coming from his dynamic with Dafoe. The challenges were there to teach him patience, which he failed miserably, the more he pushed the more the lighthouse was forbidden for him, and in turn it increased the desire. If he's dead, of insane, or having a fever dream, or whatever thing to explain the nature of that place is ultimately irrelevant because the whole story is that of a man who crossed into the unknown (killing Dafoe) to get what he wanted, and in return the unknown killed him, as described by Dafoe's curse when he said he didn't like this lobster

some trivia about the actual filming of this movie (stolen from imdb) "The film was shot on Double-X stock black and white, which requires much more light to get exposure, so when they shot at night and indoors they had to use about 15 to 20 times more light on set to actually see something on film. The crew put flickering 500- to 800-watt halogen bulbs in period-correct kerosene lamps that were only a few feet away from the actor's faces, resulting in the set being blindingly bright and the actors barely seeing each other. The lights were so bright that crew members sometimes wore sunglasses even during night shoots." "Since the film is set in 1890, it was shot on 35mm black and white Double-X 5222 film, all while augmenting the Panavision Millennium XL2 camera with vintage Baltar lenses from as early as 1918 to as late as 1938. This makes the aspect ratio approximately 1.19:1, which is practically square. To enhance the image and make it resemble early photography, a custom cyan filter made by Schneider Filters emulated the look and feel of orthochromatic film from the late 19th century. This filter blocks all the red wavelengths from hitting the film, so that the reds appear black. Considering most pores and skin tones have red in them, the orthochromatic emulation allows the audience to see just about every imperfection and pore on the actors faces."

So happy you watched this...this is one of my favourite films of all time especially after I learnt more about the story and its interpretations as the story was written to be ambiguous and heavily subjective....Such a shame Dafoe and Pattinson didn't even get a nomination from the academy..this being the director's 2nd feature film ever shows how much of a talent he is..especially if you learn more about the film and how detailed it is..I recommend that you watch 'The Lies of the Lighthouse' which gives you an overall incredibly good summary and explanation of the story ..I'm really looking forward to Pattinson as the Batman and Robert Eggers's next film (with Dafoe too) 'The Northman' ,both releasing next year..What a masterpiece really, especially because I saw it at midnight alone in silence and the days following , I didn't watch ang other movie/show and let it sink in, marking it as something special and making me re-realise my love for theatre, acting, film..I'm currently writing theatre play adaptation of the script for me to play Wake for an upcoming event (since I already know the lines and practice saying them daily) giving me hope as to if I can become the next person in my family to become a successful film actor after my 3 predecessors, but I personally think I wont br able to top their careers lol... One day, I was unloading a truck in Soho (NYC Soho, lol) and Willem Defoe walked by. I said to my friend, "Hey, look, that's Willem Defoe." And, gesturing towards the street with his chin, my friend replied: "Yeah? There's David Bowie.", as Ziggy Stardust himself sailed by on a bike. 😂 (Funny: this happened in the early 90s, but it's only now writing this that I realized both of those guys were in "Last Temptation Of Christ" together, as Jesus and Pilate! Explaining a poem is like dissecting a stain glass window. Ruins it. Old and young, again. See Kafka's The Castle and Poe's The Light-house (huh). See also Chekhov's everything. The script is in _many_ ways framed on The Shining (movie, not book).
