Entry #56
Video sets up the weather situation. Rather potent winter storm developed with some of the strongest southerly winds we've seen in the last year. As video shows, waves offshore 15 miles went from 4-5 ft at 4 am to 13 ft less than 6 hours later as 30-40 kt SSW winds made an angry sea. On Oak Island the surge in waves and New Moon high tide combined around 8 am to push the sea up to the dunes. Just an incredible site to watch.
Surfers were anxiously waiting for the winds to turn from SSW to NNW in an offshore direction to smooth out the sea as it was just about impossible and dangerous to paddle out early. Paddled out with a surf buddy Clay at Yaupon pier around 1 pm, but current was still strong and we spent and hour and thirty minutes paddling against the current or we would have ended up at Bald Head Island. The surfing in this video is of the second evening session as conditions went completely glassy and some swell still in the water. The best was about 4-5 long rides right as the sun was hitting the horizon.
