Awesome tutorial thanks for the step by step. I captured a swarm this weekend that was in the wall of my garage. For having no idea what I was doing I did pretty well and got about 6 to 8 pounds of bees in a box all together. Now I need to get some hive equipment to manage them. The morning sun comment was something I was wondering about. I'm still not sure where I should put them I moved them under my big oak tree for now just to get them away from my door..

Very grateful for this video. There were a few places where you feel back on terminology that may not be understood by the individual seeking basic information (i.e. talking about 'deeps' and then 'drawn out') but generally you did a great job as a teacher. Thanks. ADDITION: You might consider making another video just explaining all the common terms with physically showing the items. Beekeeping definitions for the newbie. Think about all the questions asked in comments and address those that fall into the definition category. Think about all the parts of the hive and what they are called and how they are used and physically show the part while describing it. If there is a video out there that does this without a lot of side talk and/or stories, I have not seen it.

Thank You for the video !!!! I have a question about the top cover, No one ever explains when you should prop it up to ventilate the hive, and if you do what keeps wax moths and hive beetles from entering?
@joeheller007
7 жыл бұрын
You are exactly right! Wax moths are opportunist and will hide in your top cover. Dont ventilate that way. Get a screened bottom board or a top hive attic or a "quilt box" for your top. something that gives ventilation but is screened. Hive beetles usually come thru the hive entrance. They can fly so they are a little tough to keep out. Place beetle traps inside your hive.

This may be my 1st year of bee keeping. Each early order has fallen through. But, I have been reading, watching, asking questions, looking for classes, registered with state association, etc. Also, have my hive, suit gloves, etc. Still gathering additional equipment. Prices have increase a lot since research last year. Thanks for your video. Very helpful. I do have one question about the feeder, specifically the one shown to input inside the hive. I liked that one over the jar. Is one of those needed for each layer of the hive or just the bottom portion? Are the refilled throughout the winter months?
@joeheller007
6 жыл бұрын
Chicquita MB Crawford The Pro feeder or “frame feeder” only needs to be placed in the top deep hive body for easy access. Feeding in the winter months isn’t needed if enough honey stores are left for your bees. This is a good beekeeping practice.

First of all... I'll most likely be buying from Dana Bee Farms due to this outstanding video. Question: could I only use 1 deep instead of 2 deeps under the medium Supper? Also could you just buy the whole kit and set it all up right away? Or do you have to slowly progress from box to box as your hive grows? Sorry if these are stupid questions, I'm just starting to do my research.
@joeheller007

Chris James It’s fine to use a medium super over your brood box. Some beekeepers only use mediums. With experience you Will determine what is best in your area. As for setting up your hive it is a good idea to just add enough room for the Bees you have. Too much space goes unguarded and pests like hive beetles and wax moths will move in. Thanks for your interest in beekeeping.

Feeding sugar syrup it’s mean it’s beekeeper fault ....stimulations can do but in natural way

Because nectar is predominantly sucrose (with some fructose, glucose and trace minerals). White sugar, also called granulated sugar or table sugar, is the most similar to nectar that we have available. Therefore, white sugar should be your choice in feeding bees. Bee Informed Partnership survey results for 2011 - 20121. About 3600 beekeepers participated in the survey question representing about 233,000 colonies. That large sample size turned up exactly no difference where feeding carbohydrates is concerned. Feed your honeybees candy, dry sugar, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), honey, sugar syrup, wet supers or nothing at all, it doesn’t matter, you get the same colony loss, in this case, about 23%.

I am just getting into bee keeping. My question is how often do you go into the hive? Do the bees become more accepting to your intrusion- gentle some after each entrance? Can you expect to split you hive 1-2 times the first year? If I begin with 2 hives, and have a good food source, how many splits can i expect? Should I split or just add supers and work my way up to obtain honey?
@joeheller007
5 жыл бұрын
Craig Jones Hello Craig, if you are just getting started in beekeeping your main concern is keeping healthy bees. Making splits will come after you are a little more comfortable working your hives. Certain times of the year require more attention, like spring and summer. Check your bees then about every 14 days. Your main concern is decease. Especially varroa mites. Every hive will eventually get varroa mites and they will kill your hive! Educate yourself on these pests. Bees don’t grow accustomed to hive inspections but they grow more aggressive in the hot and dry months. Usually no honey is gathered the first year. Sometimes but not usually.
@craigjones4755

Dana Bee Farm What do you treat your hives with for the mites? I have seen the crisco and the borax and wonder how effective that really is. It would seem that a true insecticide to kill the mites would likely kill bees a well. Do used hives contain mites or mite eggs?

If your Boardman feeder leaks at all your hive may be robbed by other bees, yellow jackets or wasps. The internal feeder is a better option, save the Boardman for watering your bees during the hot summer months.

Thanks for the video. It looks like beginner starts with a basic hive then adds another one on top of it then, as the bees grow adds a honey super. Is there any reason a beginner could not just put it all together on day one and just let the bees grow into it? Also, if you keep feeding the bees the sugar water will you get honey from that? I know it will not be the typical clover or orange blossom, but will u get a quality honey?
@joeheller007

Jim Black Hello Jim, it’s not a good idea to add too much room to your hive that goes unguarded. Hive beetles and wax moths are opportunists and will move in. Your hive needs to grow as your Bees grow. Also feeding your Bees is only necessary when you’re Bees are building comb. Like when they are first starting out in the spring. As the year goes on and the flowers are blooming there is no reason to keep feeding. Bees will store sugar water in there comb. If they are fed too much. Stop feeding when they are able to collect nectar.
@jgblack21

ok that makes sense. Are those hive boxes generally standard size? If it is like many other products the cheap "starter kits" are designed so you have to throw everything away and buy from scratch when it is time to grow. I will be sure I buy my first kit that is expandable
@joeheller007
6 жыл бұрын
Jim Black yes the standard Langstroth 10 frame beehive comes in a size that is expandable. Beehives have to be made to accommodate the bee space which is a space that Bees need to move around inside the hive. Beehives that are homemade or poorly made sometimes don’t have the correct B space. A good sign of a well-made hive is the corners. Look for the boxed joint corners. And the scalloped handles. These are harder to make in the home shop.

Roskoe P Hello Roskoe It’s a common practice to replace a failing Queen. The hive depends on a productive egg layer. As a beekeeper you need to always have a good Queen in your hive. Is there supposed to be one, for ventilation and moisture control? Also my bottom board is solid. Should I get one with a screen for varroa mite control?

nursesteve2004. The notch in the inside cover is for ventilation. However it is not a good idea to vent your hive that way. Wax moths like to hide under the cover and look for a way to get in and that’s a good way. No guards. Slide your hive top forward to close the notch. Your inside cover works good for moisture and heat like an attic. Your screened bottom board is best used to determine mite kill after a treatment. Not so much for venting.

Thank you so much for your reply my standard information come from the book published by Tony Pisano Build your Own Beekeeping Equipment the bottom of the HIVE BODY is open so basically, I followed his construction method and he talks very little about the plan me being a novice assumed and followed blindly so now I am little versed on his version form. Tony himself is well versed so I followed his Book to the word. to my surprise there are other versions example is yours HIVE BODY HAS COVERED both sides his version the hive body sits on the slatted rack and the top is covered by a Super there is no explanation, I am 80 years trying to overcome boredom. I however appreciate your reply and say thanks. I still have to learn more. and you have a wonderful day Abdulla ex Xray service person

hello TRIVIT30 I have a small bee yard of five hives and a nuc on a sheep farm in Mayslick Kentucky. Been keeping bees since I was a little boy. I am now 60 and still enjoy beekeeping. My wife and I have a beekeeping shop across the Ohio river in Aberdeen Ohio. I am currently enrolled in the Master Beekeeping program at Cornell University in New York. I have no intention of giving up beekeeping in the near future and will always keep a few hives. probably no more than I have now. Thanks for asking...............Joe

Dana Bee Farm wow so you have plenty of experience.... I’m subscribing! Never done beekeeping ever.... but really interested.... keep hearing about how the bees are dying off and think it’s really important to keep growing them.... I have a garden and haven’t seen 1 honeybee this year, getting worried..... The actor Morgen Freeman was doing one out west somewhere or contributed a lot of money towards beekeepers I’ve heard...
