I lost my beloved wife of 31 years 3 years ago. She and I would listen together to your music from Marillion to Feast of Consequences and cry at the poignant beauty your words created! Now I cry alone. This is a intensely emotional song and one of simple beauty for me! How much I would give to have her here to enjoy this with me! Thank you, Fish, for an amazing journey in song through the years! My Lori and I love you and wish you well my friend!

I have kept this video on loop for months. I wanted to read 1 million and today, it finally happened. It sounds like a teenager's attitude (I'm 54), but it was a way of saying thank you to Fish: from Misplaced childhood to Weltschmerz, from the need to find one's childhood again to the knowledge that one is saved by God's grace. Thank you for everything Fish. As a fan, I can only hope that you will come back to record......... In the meantime, every blessing!

This song is so on point. It's not only a song, it's introspection and extrospection in balance, it's a sharing of loss and a sharing of vulnerability, regret and nostalgia for all that was and is no more. It's what many of us experience, at different levels, but we're too afraid to face. I can't thank Fish enough for the life insights that he has shared over the years...I am 53 years old now but have been following him since I was 18 years old. He has never disappointed, and never will. More than a musician, I think he is one of the most influential poets of our times.

I ignored Marillion and Fish for years. I thought they were just a weak carbon copy of early Genesis but I was so wrong. I do CD exchanges on my channel and my buddy gave me a recent Marillion album (FEAR) and in time I grew to love it and then checked out more of their discography. The Fish years are amazing and "Clutching At Straws" got to my soul like few albums ever do. I now love Marillion and I love Fish.

Tremendo artista. Friend... I've just written something very similar as a result of some songs I didn't know about by Fish (Weltschmertz and Openwater) which ended up demolishing that myth of copying Gabriel and Génesis, which undoubtedly influenced their creations but with Marillion and then as a solo artist, Fish surpasses and leaves me in awe of his tremendous talent. Today I greatly admire all his work and I can hardly find any quality exempt song... I admire Fish and today I listen to him all the time. tremendous artist.

As a 12 year old boy in Aiken, SC I was one of the few in my town listening until Misplaced got some air time with a local station. Seeing all of the pictures pulled from all of the years brought a tear to my eye and a smile to my face. We have all cried with you, broken ourselves down with you, rejoiced with you, and built a better version of self with you. The memories and the music will never fade. Thank you Oinkle Fish for bearing your soul and thank you for the music that quite literally saved a life, my life. I know I am not the only one. The jester is dead, long live the jester.

My best friend is now slowly walking the aisle into the dark and it is killing me and making me cry because there is nothing that can be done about it. He is now in a place that is not his home because it is no longer possible there. He cried in my living room last year when we heard the song together. It was like saying goodbye, but we didn't know it then. A past love once said to me, "Memory is the only place you can't be driven from." She was wrong. Dementia drives everything away no matter how old you are when it hits you. It's so unfair. For all. Fish has touchingly set the whole topic to music. Thank you for this song.

He hears a voice, he tries to recognise the source and place the name A face so familiar, the smile soft and warm The memory evades him his mind wanders on Down rabbit holes, a darkened maze a place to hide and be alone Where thoughts land like snowflakes in the palm of his hand Swift melting moments, his tears a surprise He tries to remember just what made him cry With the beautiful stranger who was holding his hand He’s lost between the here and now Somewhere that he can’t be found She’s still here Her love a ghost of memory, she’ll wait for an eternity He’s still here The empty room, moth eaten curtains, drunken drapes hold back the light But for solitary sunbeams on dull chandeliers Colourless butterflies their fate now revealed In silken webs forever held within the sails of yellowed shrouds That gather dust above the dancehall floor The silent space, she stands alone and in her heart she hears the sound The sweet lift of music that drew them so close, their first dance together With a world at their feet, not so long ago He’s lost between the here and now Somewhere that he can’t be found She’s still here Her love a ghost of memory, she’ll wait for an eternity They work the soil, they sow the seed, they’re side by side upon the earth Growing together now forever apart, with a love so embracing held in their hearts But nothing between them no memories shared No recognition in his soft, pale green eyes, she’s still here He’s lost between the here and now Somewhere that he can’t be found She’s still here Her love a ghost of memory, she’ll wait for an eternity He’s still here He’s lost between the here and now Somewhere that he can’t be found She’s still here Her love a ghost of memory, she’ll wait for an eternity He’s still here And they’re still here Lyric copyright D W Dick 2020

When Fish and Marillion divorced, I was one of the kids who went to live with Dad. I followed Fish more closely than his former band (although in keeping with my analogous theme, I did stay with Mom from time to time and thoroughly enjoyed our visits). Songs like this are the reason why. There are very few songwriters I consider True Poets; Bob Dylan, early Springsteen, Neil Peart and a couple others. Fish is at the top of this list. Now, onto this particular song... This song and it's perfect mate, the amazing video component, hurt me, cut me deeply. I am 52 and have spent the last almost 30 years in desperate love with a memory. That ghost of a romance has haunted me through every relationship, even lurking in the dark corners of my only attempt at marriage, at age 46 and lasting less than two years. I live a solitary life these days, working with addiction victims and devoting my life to the service of others. It's a good life, I still perform my music from time to time and I'm in a relatively happy place. But that ghost still comes to me in the night, still haunts the deep recesses of my wounded heart. I said that this song hurt me, but I meant that in a good way. My feelings are hard ones to describe, yet once again Fish manages to put into eloquent verse that which lies deeply hidden within me. Thank you for this, my never-met friend.

I felt something of the feelings you describe when I first heard "Melanie Still Hurts" from an obscure band called The Icicle Works. The music is different, the lyrics as well, but are ingenious in their simplicity. It's always wonderful to find music that resonates with our most inner aspects.

Your story touched me. You deserve to be happy, don't worry about the age. Love can always find you, at any times. Write your wish with your heart like it's a prayer, the universe will answer you. I wish you the best, and I send you a big hug

Thank you for the positive responses, folks. What I have always admired about Fish is his ability to reach us beneath the surface, the rays of light filtering through to the common places we share in the depths. He has been the catalyst, once again, for random collisions between disparate souls.

At the age of 16 I discovered Marillion and the voice of fish. He was the music of my youth, and now as I approach the age of 60, he is the voice of my old age. He is a poet, he is a gift to humanity and I thank God for him. I will be sad if this truly is his last album, but the music on this is a fitting parting gift. Thank you Fish, thank you for everything.

I lost my dad on 30/04/2020 with vascular dementia. Cancer claimed my mam's life in 2012. Thank God she didn't witness his suffering. I could write a story that this cruel illness as in people's lives. But we each have our own journey. X

Makes me think of my Nan and Granddad. They never spent 1 night or even 1 day apart from the day they got married. The lyric "they work the soil" made me really think of them as they owned and ran a big market garden and worked together every single day mainly side by side too bless them. So many many years side by side, then they finally decided to sell the market garden and big old white house they lived in on site and retire (not that my granddad really wanted to) and moved to a little bungalow. Sadly I think it was the beginning of the end for my granddad, he died from a sudden out of blue massive coronary a few years later. My nanna then declined without him and developed dimentia and in the end it was to dangerous for her to be 9n her own even for a very short time so we had to make the decision to put her in a care home. She was always asking the staff and us where her Desmond was (that was her husband, my granddad) as she was missing him and felt lonely and wanted to go home to him as he would be missing her too 😥. It really was truly heartbreaking seeing her remember every day or so that he was gone again. Seeing her go through the pain of that loss over and over as it came back to her in flashes broke my heart 💔. This song really captures dimentia so well.

Some 20 years ago, when I still lived with my parents, I was listening to Raingods with Zippos in my dad's house. He peeked into my room and said he liked the music. He sat with me and we listened together for a while. I remember it so vividly. Now he's recovering from cancer and suffering from Alzheimer's. A couple weeks ago he told me cancer is scary, but Alzheimer's is worse. This song hit me so hard, but at the same time I feel like I needed it. Thanks.

Makes me think of the last time I saw my Dad. He was in hospital and as I sat there watching him he opened his eyes a few times and looked straight at me before falling back to sleep. Every time he looked at me I could see that he was trying to work out who I was. He stayed asleep for quite some time and I was just about to kiss his head for the last time before travelling the 267 miles back home when he opened his eyes one more time and looked at me and gave me the sweetest smile, he finally worked out who I was. He passed away 6 days later. Dementia is heart breaking because you lose the person bit by bit and grieve for them long before they have gone. I was comforted with knowing that he knew who I was at the end This is a beautiful song x

My Dad died of cancer 6 years ago today. Last night in bed I listened to this track and cried and I've just watched it again on the computer..and cried. No-one touches my soul like Fish's lyrics do but - strangely, I feel uplifted now. Isn't that amazing? The power of music. It keeps us going. Roll on Liverpool next month..it's been a while.🐟 I shall have to make sure I use waterproof mascara!😢 UPDATE: The gig was amazing (thanks Big Man) and my mascara held, thankfully. Not from tears but SWEAT!! O2 Academy, Liverpool PLEASE do something about excessive heat in the venue! Are there water sprinklers in case of fire? Use those!!

I lost my Father 4 days ago at the age of 94... and though i know, it´s not a scandal to die at the age of 94, it hurts so much!!! It´s because, he was my hole life around and i know nothing else than to talk to him when i need it... I miss him so much already... I recognized this song several weeks ago... when we kept fighting... when it got harder and harder at my Ma´s home... Now, he´s gone!! Dried and drowned of cancer at the same time... And i thank you so much for your deep lyrics and this mellow song... it comforts me in this complicated and hurtful situation... Thank you !!! LOVE!!! FISH !!!

There use to be a program on Dutch radio called "The LP Show", where they would play songs of recently released albums. I was a huge fan and would drag my cassette-deck down from my chamber in the attic to the living room every Thursday evening, so that I could catch all the interesting stuff. One night, late 1982, the presenter announced two songs by a band I'd never heard of, called Marillion. I duly pressed the Record button and, after the first two bars of He Knows You Know, was utterly blown away. Over the years, hearing more songs and gaining more understanding of the lyrics, my love for the lyricist and singer Fish grew to great heights. The power, the expression, the shear eloquence of his poetry is second to none. Now, having just heard this song, I feel much like I did 38 years ago. Derek, if you read this: Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Couldn't agree more. It has been a fantastic ride for almost 4 decades now. Saw him twice, met him once. He is greater and taller than ALL of us. He knows, and knows how to express it, you know. Am writing a book now, wish he could find the time to edit it. A biography about forgotten sons, garden parties, roses of Damascus, gentlemen excuses, gardens of remembrances, a totally fugazi world, weltschmerz and lots more. If you read it like this it's like Fish's bio, but it isn't. The lady who the book is about, died at the age of 84 this summer and she was a mega-fan of his lyrics and music. Slainthe mhath, mrs Math

My mum has been married to her husband (my stepdad) for 50 years. He didn't remember, nor did he have any idea that it was their anniversary a few weeks ago. She is a fit and healthy 80 now. He is a fit and healthy 83 also but most of the time he doesn't have a clue who she is. I don't need to ellaborate.... I have regular updates from her. He has bad days and better days. But as time goes on, more of the former. I emotionally support her as much as I can but there's only so much you can do or say...with words down a telephone. Just discovered this song...!! The image of the glass screen on the young couple on the beach, as one of them reflects on their past together and the gulf the condition has placed on their relationship grows, for the partner going through this heartbreaking situation is so symbolic and true.. And then there's the man himself, putting himself in that place, with his own past all around him. How can something so heartbreaking be so beautiful too?

My father-in-law passed from Alzheimer's several years ago. Watching my wife suffer as relatives do was always horrible, but as an "outsider" I never really understood fully, that is until now. I've watched this video a couple of times and this last time I was crying like a baby. Thank you so much, Fish, for putting this into words that everyone can understand. If ever I meet someone who doesn't understand I will ask them to read the story of this track and listen very carefully to the words. I've never been moved as much as I am listening to this.
