So true. This is the best advice you can give 50 years in the hobby and I always design a tank based on the fish I plan on keeping. great advice.

I'm kinda doing this sideways, - I think. My son brought home a used 5gal. he found next a the dumpster down the block - complete, right down to 2 air pumps, lid, gravel, and plastic plants n' all. We cleaned it up, (pretty groadie), and my son sets off to the local fish shop for some livestock. - so far it's free, so what the hell? (OK! OK! - NOW I know all the ramifications...) - and they send him back home with water treatments (like two 1oz. bottles) food, and a flippin' BETA which looks like it was captured with a weed-wacker. Course he's named the damn thing by now... you know what I mean... OK - so now I'm committed to keepin' "Fabulous Frances" - and one of my daughters, not to be out done, drags home a 10gal. tank from junk shop in town with a HOB filter and a air pump - oh! - and a bag of 6 Neon-tetras, 6 Guppies, and 4 Ghost shrimp! So good ol' dad sets about cleaning up the 10gal in the wash tub down in the basement. I dried it off and dragged it back up to the living room, and there's "Fabulous" swimming around with a Tetra in his jaws. - Aw, hell. Next morning I've got a dead Guppy male stuck to the filter intake (and ya, I know why), and a dead Guppy female, belly up surveying the gravel. Ok. - its been 24 hours with water in the 10gal and I transfer everybody to the 10gal - leaving Fabulous and 1 shrimp in the 5gal... (dad runs to the fish shop) scores a bacteria booster... so I'm ladling this poop in a bottle into the tank and what do I spy buzzing around in the 5gal; a couple of Guppy fry... and, OhNO! - with "Fabulous"! I'm a FATHER! AGAIN! MUST SAVE BABIES! So, now I got a 1/2 gallon clear glass flower vase with a desk lamp, two fry and an air-stone bubbling away on the counter beside the 5gal tank, and "Fabulous" blowing bubble nests and leering at them (with one shrimp "for company"). This lasts for 2 days and then third morning I've another dead pair of Guppies, and NOW, 4 Guppy fry buzzing around in the 10gal. SO... OBVIOUSLY... My wife makes a trip to the junk shop and SCORES a 2gal acrylic pre-ten-da tank for... Wait for it ... Fabulous! Course! So the 6 Guppy Fry get the 5gal 'cause they'll get eaten... but they're getting big enough to need a proper filter. Anyway, my OTHER daughter calls that she's coming home from school for the weekend and hears all about my "SON's" new fish tank and the "Babies" - my wife has sent her a picture from her cell phone and - Yep! all these little eyeballs with a tails! Now... what is it about twins? She shows up for the weekend .................with ANOTHER 10Gal TANK. I'm buyin' a cat.

Just found your channel - love it - Had tanks in the 60s, 70s, 80s but took a job where we moved every 6-24 months, so I sold all my tanks. Back into the hobby this year and already have 4 55g & 125g & 20g & 50g & 2 10g & 29g. Most of those tanks are no where near their fish load. I plan on having them all lightly populated by next spring. I've chosen my fish and am just going slow. If I find something I really want, even if it isn't in my plans, I can still have room for it. Two of those tanks are currently isolation tanks and I have two "plant tanks" that I can also put fish in when I need to. I BELIEVE in what you say in this video. Thank you.

Great thoughts! One thing to keep in mind regarding the development of fish is how stable parameters are/ how clean, and fresh the water is. One experiment in particular, performed by the great Jack Wattley, is the one where he put two groups of discus into two different sized tanks. The first/largest had a sponge filter, and got a single water change of 90% each day. The other tank was smaller, and had no filtration, but got 6-7 90% water changes every day. (Keep in mind this is EXTREME) After a month the fish in the small tank were nearly DOUBLE the size of the ones in the larger tank. All about how clean, and fresh the water was. That being said, it's always preferable to get a tank that's bigger than what your fish needs for 2 reasons. 1: If they have a little room to move they can exhibit more natural behavior. and 2: The water is more stable in a larger tank so you don't have as much maintenance to perform. Means more time enjoying your fish than trying to keep ahead of the curve so that they stay healthy.

Mine was also the silver arowana! I remember them at a pet store with no intention on buying fish but once I saw them I had to start an aquarium. Bought a 120g and two 8" arowana had them for three years until they out grew the tank. Took them back to the fish farm that I bought them from:(

I used to belong to the Aquarium Society in Winnipeg & entered exhibitions & competitions. I quit when it got too hard for me to handle heavy equipment, large buckets of water, etc. I'm thinking of getting a small aquarium & keeping pencils. I'm just worried if I do it will get out of hand. You need to know this is addictive. You'll fall in love with them & want more & more aquariums, until your house is full & you spend all your time taking care of them, etc.

So true fishkeeping always leads to starting more than one tank lol. I got into this hobby because I got attached to one royal blue veiltail betta from PetSmart. After doing my research I realized the tank I had him in was way too small so I found a cheap 29 gallon. Then one thing led to another and I just had to start a community tank so he wouldn't be lonely so I added a school of corydoras and pleco. Then eventually he died from columnaris and I just had to get more bettas because they were the reason why I started this hobby in the first place so I started a betta sorority, then one of the girls wouldn't get along with the rest and I had to put her in her own separate 10-gallon and of course I couldn't let her be lonely so I added two African dwarf frogs. Now I miss having male bettas so I'm going to set up another 20 gallon just so I can have a male king betta in another community tank. Aquariums are like potato chips. You can't have just one

We care about the fish and want the customers to enjoy the hobby not get frustrated.

Ya I understand what your saying and agree. I would say about 80% of the fish they sell at Walmarts/Petsmarts/Petcos etc. Can not fit in a 10 gallon and will fast outgrow a 20 if you have more then 5 fish. Larger tanks are totally the way to go.

Sometimes, you have to go smaller and rethink what is really important. The fish I want requires 125-180 gallons, with 6 feet of length... After 3 months, I finally decided that I really want to be able to have a shallow reef. I have had saltwater tanks for several years, but sold my big 125 when we moved. I love my clownfish, and cannot wait to set him into the 80 reef....just as soon as the stand arrives, the live rock is placed and the tank is cycled. Sorry, Dory...

You'll be fine, 52 gallons isn't perfect for Mbunas but it will work. Bigger is always better in the fish world but if a 52 gallon is what you've got then use it. Who cares what all of the arrogant know it alls on the forums say. That's why I stay off of forums, seems like a contest to see who's the smartest. Not saying all forums are like that but I've seen it alot.

I tell people to start out small with any hobby. The average fish keeper only stays in the aquarium hobby for six months. See if you like it before you go with a big tank because they can take up more living space in your home, are harder to move around and transport, are more work, and cost more to opperate.
