@@LOAFEMB first their guitarist, Kendall Jones, who was convinced to join some religious cult because they were playing the Devil's music. Then some infighting as I recall and the final straw was the frustration of not breaking through bigger as a band. Charley Dowd, keys and trombone and a major songwriter, and drummer Fish were the biggest blows. After that, Dirty Walt left but rejoined some years later.

Jamel, I dunno if you reacted to Fishbone and to this song after my recommendation, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who suggest them to for a reaction but i'm sure I've spent enough enthusiasm and words on them to encourage you to give'em a try. I'm glad you weren't disappointed, I'm glad.... happy to hear your words about the crowd diversity and that you caught my point about how much important would have been if Metal, and Rock in general, had more black musicians and bands creating music and performing on stage as an alternative to RAP and R'n'B . Something like that would have been important good repercussions on AfroAmerican culture and culture in general. Fishbone went even further and is sad that that role hasn't been sufficiently recognized. For all gods sake... I found out about Fishbone here in Italy and you still had no idea they ever existed? Sounds unbelievable even only thinking about it! The band is still performing today, the lineup has seen many changes along the years and that's a real pity because they could seriously be huge. They definitely have been influential but nothing takes away my belief they could have become one of the greatest bands in history. You know what... who cares... they ARE one of the greatest bands ever. If you reacted to this thanks to my suggestion... well... that fills my heart with joy, I love when my passion for music becomes contagious!

I loved their ska/punk/funk fusion, and they put on amazing shows (until Angelo started bringing out a theremin). I understand why they moved on though, as Ska had mutated into vacuous party music in its 3rd wave. (Ironic that most people equate it with white frat boys now, since it was born in Jamaica). Oh, and how about the Roots getting into trouble for playing Fishbone's "Lyin' Ass Bitch" when Michelle Bachmann was on Fallon?

More than any other band, Fishbone was the soundtrack of my youth from the mid-80s to the early 90s. Thank you for checking them out. They are still touring in some form, but this song was from the last album recorded with their original lineup, and it was never quite the same again after this. The question of what happened is a complicated one, but I think it mostly had to do with the fact that radio, and even their own fans, didn't know how to categorize them. Their sound changed radically from album to album, and even from song to song (and even within any given song), so it was always a challenge to keep up with them. This album was a turning point, because they had finally began to get some mainstream attention and it was probably the most radio-friendly record they ever recorded. Unfortunately, their most talented songwriter (the one who wrote this song) quit the band right after the album was released, and other original members began dropping out soon after. Most of them are back together now, so I keep hoping against hope that they will record some new music at this level. You need to see them live to get the full effect - might want to check this out: kzitem.info/news/bejne/2YmbyYWOhYmphWk

They were super underrated. They seemed to peak around 88' to 93' with Truth and Soul, The Reality of my Surroundings, and then Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe, which is the album Servitude was on. I think they genre was a little hard to nail down as they bounced between Punk/Rock, Ska, R&B, and funk. They were at times all over the place but always awesome. They were also getting older without ever really taking off. They started in 79'. I think 93, 94 with The Reality of My Surroundins was their highest point with numerous videos on MTV and playing on the 2nd or 3rd Lollapalooza tour. They were one of the big bands that year, playing with groups that continued on with sustained success, like Tool, Primus, Rage Against the Machine, and Alice and Chains. I also think having a band with 7 members may have been hard to manage. I think only 2 of the guys stuck with the band the whole time while cycling through another 17 or so people. Still one of my favorite bands that I keep coming back to again and again.

Oh man Jamel, you're the best, I gotta tell ya a (not) quick story. So I started watching these reaction videos about a month or so ago, just to see what the hype was about, I was hooked. My fav ones though, are the younger kids, millennials and gen z, or anyone period, discovering music I grew up on, and I've been discovering new stuff too. You're 10yrs younger than me, I just hit the big 5-0, and it truly touches my soul watching people discover bands like Fishbone and RATM, or some great classic rock, especially so many different people, from different backgrounds, different cultures and skin color. I really think with all the bullshit going on, that there's so many more people waking up and seeing all the injustice and are finally ready to stand up and say this shit's gotta stop. It's way overdue, but at least some people are finally coming around. I really think music and entertainment can be a driving force behind people finding common ground, and you're promoting that every day. You're diverse love of just about every genre of music is impressive, you're easily one of the top 3 channels I check out day to day, all together, not just reaction vids. I'm also hearing a lot of the lyrics for the first time too, I mean, like you said when you're at work, I've heard them before, but I never really listened to the message. Back then, I was a skater / punk-rocker, just a middle class kid from the burbs in the late 80's and 90's, full of angst, and no idea what the real world was like, but I knew the music was meaningful, and got me pumped. It wasn't until 19/20ish y/o, when I first heard of Fishbone, and the first time I heard a band sing about political issues that were current, (this was right after Rodney King) I think it was the first time I really wrapped my head around the fact the world was much larger than my little suburbia bubble. Plus it was one of my first live punk rock, mosh pit type shows, downtown St. Louis, at a place called Mississippi Nights, right on the river, great place for seeing live music, like smaller StL version of the House of Blues. I was angry and excited and confused all at once, but I knew I wanted to hear and learn more. I came by to actually see what they've been up to also, and decided to comment, after seeing all the fellow Fishbone fans, and so happy to see the boys are still out there jammin'. As far as why they didn't blow up bigger, I'm not sure, I definitely think them being 4 brothers had something to do with it, especially since they didn't "fit the mold" of "oh black people only rap" but they were/are very popular with the punk, skateboard, surfing type crowd, and like onther poster stated, they were all over the place genre wise, so I don't think, with the way the music industry was back then, labels or big studios knew how or where to "put them" or how to market them. As often happened to musicians throughout history, bands back them were mostly commodity to the music biz, there was no youtube and barely any internet, so if you were outside the norm, you were a risk, investment wise, and if they couldn't make money off ya, they'd say.... buh-bye. Thanks for reacting to them, and thanks for all the content you put out there, my god man, get some rest...lol. I don't think everyone realizes that putting up. even a 10min video, is not like tweeting something, or just hitting send, it's time consuming and takes some work. Anyway, I've rambled on enough, keep up the great work, Peace!! ✌️ (FISHBONE IS RED HOT!!!)

So you realize bro that this song and album came out in 1993 which means it’s been out for almost 30 years now. There has been a parallel stream of black music that’s been active for a very long time which most of us have been completely ignorant to and only now in this century has some of our main stream music caught up to what we were doing 30 years ago sonically and lyrically. When we started getting into Neo Soul and the puffy/Don’t hate the player hate the game era of HipHop we completely abandoned songs of social relevance and protest like this one & music from bands that were trying stretch musically like Fishbone. Thankfully, there still around in doing it. But the album the song comes from titled “Give a monkey a brain and he’ll swear he’s the center of the universe“ was arguably the strongest moment In the bands history. Glad you discovered it and thank you so much for listening to them. Black music history matters.

They are still playing live and touring when there isn’t a pandemic. The have both a Facebook page and website fishbone.net Check video for Everyday Sunshine, great energy with amazing vocals. I first heard their single “UGLY” in 1985, when they were signed as teenagers. I saw them in 1992 just before Kendall left the band, so original lineup. So good made me almost give up on singing and playing guitar, how can anyone compete with them? Check their back catalog, you’ll be glad you did. Please record a reaction to either Everyday Sunshine or Party at Ground Zero.

Jamel thx love your channel you give me hope for the human race. To answer your question maybe it's the same problem that Living Color had that they don't fit the corporate mold translate "money". I am 61 years old and if these Fishbone showed I would see them in a heart beat. A truly great band but marginalized because maybe the brothers aren't supposed play metal/rock funk. Mostly white people in the crowed it seems like. Possibly some people's musical taste and stiffness of mind do not allow themselves to see the beauty of other cultures playing a musical style that is not typical. I love it when this happens because brings all kinds of new musical stuff to the table cheers my Friend

I saw Fishbone live back in late 90s, I was never really into ska but they had my respect from being associated with bands like RHCP & Jane’s Addiction back in the day. I had a lot of fun at their show, they put on a great show and really are the exception to me not being into ska.

You should check out some Zeal And Ardor. The frontman is biracial and their music mixes metal and slave spirituals, which is an awesome and unconventional mix. This is the first time I've heard Fishbone, and it was great. I'm definitely going to have to listen to more of their stuff.

Yes those facts are true , arguably the most slept on band ever, Gwen Stefani from No Doubt listed them as one of her influences. At that point they have already had a few line up changes that changed them, there’s a documentary that is truly sad about them it’s a good watch for you to get the info you’re looking for but by no means a feel good movie, hope this helped

They opened for gang of four at Lupos Heartbreak Hotel Providence RI in 83 or 84...there was a heavy white supremacist element there that night and you should have seen the skinheads dancing to Fishbone...awesome how that shit falls to the wayside with some killer tunes.

You need to check out the documentary made about Fishbone. This band has a very interesting captivating heart felt story and is narrated by none other than Laurence Fishburne (no fish puns intended haha). The documentary is called Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone. Enjoy and cheers!
