Bthelick, you've seriously elevated my production skills in the short time I've found your videos, since the vid "Why your songs don't sound like westend". I'm eternally grateful. Making a new house song every day has become a ritual, it's so much fun and they're coming out super clean. super grateful and would love to donate to you if you have that option. Also, wanted to ask if there's any way you can kinda explain how Eli Brown made "Be The One" , I really like what he did with the bassline, and also he seems to have done something unique with the kick, as it hits harder every 1-2 kicks, idk if that's just the sidechaining he did or something else. thanks so much man truly!

Thanks for your videos mate, real gold for the beginners. Playing music has been my hobby for 20 years. Lacking the proper music education I always just 'pressed and guessed' and what you say about having a good ear training is def true. If you consume a lot of the same music over and over again, you start dissecting it to the bone, you know how it sounds, you know how it feels. It's been about a year since I actually started learning musical theory for real after going DAWless. It explains a lot of things I have developed an ear (or a taste lol) for, but so much is still out of the scope of a formal definition, it just sounds good, it feels good. I touched on bass house in the video "genres that don't use chords" but I do intend to get round to a proper video on it. It's not easy reverse engineering those sounds, there's heavy use of non-standard oscillators through distortion, which makes it very much a trial and error affair.

@Bthelick
Жыл бұрын
It's lots of things, but mostly it's consistency. Consistency in output, schedule and story. Knowing what your own story is, helps with all of those. Understanding what a brand is, what your identity is , helps a lot in obtaining an audience, I suggest watching a bunch of Seth Godin videos on KZitem. It's easier for people to like you if they understand what you are, and if they know how often they can come back to find out what's new with you. Don't worry about not being top tier. Someone is always better than someone else, and it's not a barrier to obtaining an audience because you can bring the audience with you. Audiences like to watch an artist grow and improve, and love to boast that they were there at the beginning! So for example in my case for this channel, the story I picked was a more music theory approach to dance music because that is an area that is not covered well and I think it can help people , It's not my only talent and it's not the only thing I like to do, but I had to pick something to make it easy for people to understand what I am as opposed to just trying to do everything. Also, this is not my first time doing things like this. I knew that I could only manage one video a week, and it would take around 2 years to reach my first 1000 subscribers. But that only works if you never miss a week, the consistency is the key part so whatever schedule you choose you have to commit to it and stick to it.

If you can find a general rule for 'sounds good', you'd be a millionaire. I think you are right about the audio samples, it seems to be in the old early 90's rave style - anything that fits, like when using the old Amiga trackers. I've tried a little experiment (although I'm no way a good musician), with how to do transitions without effects, changing from obviously abrupt, to less so, by distraction technique right before a transition. Might explain why the two sets of rising notes not in a matching scale passes ok, as it's short, and draws your attention, although this sounds more of an 'effect' rather than programmed like you say. I wonder what it's perceived musical centre is?

@lilsilky7231

What is a producers role then? I’m confused
@Bthelick
Жыл бұрын
To call the shots. Expecting a producer to do everything is like expecting a film director to write the screen play, star in the film, and edit the film! . When I ghost write for producers they tell me what track to make, They decide everything from references, where in the DJ set it will fit , what audience it's for (culture, country, groove/ type, male/ female, drug type used etc) they Vito melodies, arrangement, sound design, overall emotion. DJ's make fantastic producers because they know the audience best as they watch reactions every performance. It's their job to bring that experience into the studio. At the top level everyone is an expert in their field , as you can't expect one person to be able to do everything well in every context. People think getting a track mastered/ mixed/ engineered by someone else is normal at the top level, but why not composition? At the top level I have been on tracks where there is a lyricist, who is separate to the singer, who is separate to the melody writer, in fact there is usually multiple song writers with different roles, all separate from the engineer who is separate to the recording engineer who is separate to the arranger , who is separate to the producer. Jacko needed Quincy , Eminem needed Dre, Metallica needed Bob, Britney needed Max. doesn't matter the genre, its been that way for a century. With the exception of maybe Prince, no one person has been able to do it all themselves at that level. Yes some producers can make beats, and some can mix, but when they're doing those things they aren't producing, they're writing and engineering. Production still needs to happen on top of that

Probably because I did it in an hour 🤣 I'm using the same drums , mastering is never usually the answer though. It's just because I don't have the same sounds. I'm synthesizing sounds that were probably samples and or created differently. A track is the sum of everything. 1 change of 1 thing effects everything else. Also the track is lower in level to make room for my narration etc.

No , timberland does produce, but what most people see him do (as a beat maker) is not usually production. again that's why the language got messed up, because beatmaker came to mean producer as well. Then bedroom producer happened. Obviously the roles merge and different people have crossover talents, like after 2 decades of being a musician, writer and engineer, I am getting into production. Expecting a dj (or any industry artist) to do everything is like expecting a film director to start in their own films, write the screenplay & script, and then edit too. All completely different roles. And the further up the success ladder you go the more experts in each field get drafted as time gets shorter.

@Bthelick obviously i know there are professions within music but that wasnt my point. can you prove Fisher does anything at all? Play an instrument? Work a daw? Make beats? Engineer? Write music? I doubt you can because I highly doubt he does any of those things therfor hes not a producer in any capacity, yet is very successful artist so I'm not really sure what part you're disagreeing with.

That IS my point though, one of the most successful producers in the world Rick Rubin doesn't have a clue that mixing is, or a chord, can't play an instrument etc. That's not a producers job. Ideally a producer should NOT do those things because that messes with their purpose. Producers are supposed to be the closest thing to the audience, they need to react and make big decisions emotionally. I've had producers who I ghost for ask me for piano/ harmony lessons before and I have actively discouraged it, as I've seen too many times that will make them a worse producer. A producer should not know about any gear or have to touch any gear. They need to be stood at the back of the room calling the shots and directions with the big picture in mind. They are the conduit between the manager, artist, and promoter

I am pretty new to music production and have been taking what you say as hard rules to follow. I’ve been having to remind myself that these are just new ideas to try out. There is no right or wrong way to make music.

yeah it's easy to forget with music. Always follow you ears and heart (and in the case of dance music follow the movement of your bum and shoulders too!!!) . IMO my rules of thumb are still a great starting point though obvs 😁👍👊

I have such an appreciation for your channel man. I haven’t put out anything in years because I felt like my production style was stuck in 2009 but your videos have given me so much confidence to start producing again and it’s so much fun flexing that creative muscle again. Cheers from Detroit!

I've been wanting to make my own music for about 10 years now, and every time I try to get into it, I get so SO overwhelmed with what to do. Not only in learning DAWs, but also in general ideas around music. I also have an incredibly short attention span and so that adds to my frustration. Imagine how overjoyed I am to find your videos. It's by far the best way I could ever learn about making the music I want to make. Thank you SO much!

Interesting video, I have a simple view on all of this: If it sounds good, it works out fine. That is and should be the main core of any music production or any artistic pursuit. Some artists use the complete music theory system as much as they can, and cannot come up with something new because they are so engrained to create something out of a preexisting formula injected into a "Genre" or something. But some other artists use different sources of theory that has nothing to do with the medium and it works because its a translation from the inner world into a materialized form. Both approaches work as so many I am not aware of.

I don't always follow scales. I just go with what sounds good because a lot of synth presets are detuned anyway which affects their real pitch.
