Thanks for a wonderful, peaceful inspirational film. I recommend listening to the soundtrack through noise-cancelling headphones, the sound of the water and the birds, the waves; all very moving. I am lucky only to live an hour from here, but I have never fished here. Our own waters (two natural lakes of 30 acres with browns) plus Clywedog are also close by so spoilt for choice. A film like this, watched in the grey cold of November, makes you feel very blessed and privileged to be a fly fisherman. Thank-you again, I must come and give Brenig a try next year.

It's a coincidence that in your video you mention the Bob Church and Jack Charlton programme that was filmed on Rutland Water as it was this that film that inspired me to take up fly fishing. I can recall big Jack catching rainbows on a Black Chenille lure and thinking that I would love to have a go at that. So, I invested in a new rod, reel and line, and yes you've guessed it, some Black Chenille lures and waited with great anticipation for the Opening day of my local trout water. The big day arrived and I got to the banks of the reservoir at first light with many other Club members. And so I fished for most of the day and it was with great dismay I never had a pull never mind a fish !! Had big Jack and the Black Chenille just been lucky on the day I asked myself. As I watched anglers aound me catching, I realised then that there was more to this great sport than first meets one's eye. "What you're using?" came from the guy fishing further down the bank." Black Chenille" I somewhat sheepishly replied with my very limited knowledge of the art. "Try a White Baby Doll" he called with a distinct confidence in his voice. Baby Doll I asked myself, what on earth is he talking about !! All these weird and wonderful names was like a foreign language to me. So, the session ended with a blank and on my way home, called in at my local tackle shop and purchased half a dozen White Baby Dolls. The next morning I again turned up on the banks of the reservoir with renewed anticipation. Bingo !!! Within 20 minutes I was in to m dayy first rainbow caught on a fly. Eureka, I felt absolutely over the moon. I caught a total of 9 fish that day, I was hooked, and knew that this was for me. Tightlines.

Hello Howard, thankyou for an amazing film of Brenig. I watch it many times over winter, in anticipation of what the coming year maybe hold. I began fishing Brenig in around 2011, like you, beginning with Viva's on floating and intermediate fly lines. Slowly over the years since, increasing my knowledge. Now using nymph's, buzzers, we're, dries, all sorts. U tube is a wonderful medium in helping you tie flies, attach droppers etc. As a young boy, I used to watch my dad tie flies stood behind his shoulder, though only got chance to fly fish, fly tie as an adult, as in those days, children should be seen and not heard. It's my aim one one day to live near Brenig, inspired by gentleman called Dr Howard Alexander Bell of Wrington, Somerset. After serving in the first and second World Wars as a Medic, he married, settled and opened a Doctor's Surgery near Blagdon Water in Somerset, where he fly fished his days out and pioneered many of the nymphs we use today. Before Dr Bell, anglers used to use salmon type, flashy flies for trout, in a kind of hit and hope method. The trout probably attacked those flies of the day, as an intruder, rather than see them as a food source. Dr Bell spooned his catches and finding nymphs, he then tried to copy them in the fly tying vice. The Blagdon Buzzer, Grenadier and Amber Nymphs were all created by Dr Bell. Dr Bell had the courage to step out from the mould and create a method far more sensible, even better still, when in those days they wouldn't have had anything like the fly tying materials they have today. I remember one year at Brenig, fishing the Tower Bay end of the lake, past the Visitor Centre. Looking up towards the Brenig Arm, some big black clouds rolled in, everywhere went dark. I thought I was going to get absolutely drowned! However, the clouds rolled over and the sun came out again, lol. I saw it as a little reminder of how tiny man really is, in a huge, dramatic landscape, as against the huge forces of nature. Thankyou again Howard for your film, it makes winter feel much shorter!

Hi Ian, It is lovely to hear from you and I am glad you enjoyed the film. It seems such a long time since I made it. It is great that it is still current. I fished very little last year because the Salmon fishing was so terrible and I never actually got to Brenig - the first time that has happened in over 30 years. But my plan is to have a bit of a break from Salmon fishing and get a season ticket at Brenig. I am getting quite excited about it. I hope you can follow your dream and move close to Brenig. I think I say in the film it is a powerful and at times intimidating place but I do love it. Best wishes, Howard

@@howardjacksonx Hello Howard, Thankyou so much for your reply, I'm thrilled you read my message. I haven't been to Brenig either the last couple of years after going every year on the trot for around seven or eight years. Life changed a couple of years ago when we lost our very much loved father. We now look after Mum. Mum comes first. Although I never had the opportunity to have my own family, I've been blessed in another way, to have the parents I have. I feel blessed to have them and they're always in my mind somewhere, always with me. I too am hoping to go this year to Brenig. I also like Llyn Alwen too. Another great fishery, surrounded by amazing countryside. I wish you all the very best Howard. Great to message with you. Very best of luck. Take care, Ian.

Thanks for posting Howard really appreciate it. Thank you for the time taken to film it as well. Been fishing the Brenig for similar amount of time and understand your "relationship" with the place. Been keeping a fishing diary of a sorts since 1988 although fished it few years before that. Always seemed to catch a lot more browns then..may have been because I attacked it as a river angler and not so much with the lure. That's changed. I note the places you have not seen much caught and I agree especially that lifebelt slipway. Next year DV hope to yomp a bit more from the Arm as only fished it a few times. Took a load of pics all round the lake when it was last drained. Amazed at the depths and snags. Sods law lost all pics after a virus so have to go on memory. Put a booby out on a sink line when you want to have a sleep and curl line round your finger...a nice awakening when it tugs off. They felled more by the water sports bay and had a cracking day walking round to the right. Blue flash damsel nymph scoring tops last couple of years for us. One happy Swallow. Hafod Lom woods fish ok bit awkward if water bank high . You can wade out there and into deep enough water. Lot of old sapling trunks on the bed which snag you so floating or intermediate adviseable. Most unusual catch was a wreath by the dam...

I have just come back from my second visit to "the Brenig". Your drive around tour is absolutely invaluable, thanks very much. To update a little... the entrance on the Nantglyn side nearest the dam wall was locked. The top end of the reservoir is now a no fishing zone for both bank and boat anglers. There is a yellow bouy to mark the zone. Also the nesting site of the ospreys is a no go area. It was guarded by two security guards. When bank fishing, I would advice to check your leader. The rocks are like razors.

Hi Dave - I am glad you found the film useful. It is now very old and I know the gate was locked last time I went which was in 2018. That is a bit of an inconvenience. I will have to refamiliarise myself if I manage to get back there this year. Best wishes, Howard

Thats a great video, thankyou. I dont know why i haven't seen that before. Incidentally I had my pb rainbow from there when I was 14.. I'm now 42. I've never had one over 10lb 3oz since. And I got my picture in angling times as it was opening day of the season back then.

Hi Jonathan - as you say Brenig is a wonderful place - I have to travel 65 miles to get to it. And yes it would be great if it was a wild fishery but given the state of wild fishing for Salmon and Sea Trout I think Brenig is a great compromise. The fish are usually great fighters but interestingly when I was there a couple of weeks ago I caught 9 decent fish and all of them gave a lack lustre performance. I have no idea why - but it is a one-off. Usually they fight very well. Best wishes, Howard

HI John, Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed the video. It is pretty old now. I haven't been to Brenig for a couple of years now (obvious reasons) so I am not up to date with things. But when I did fish it the potential was excellent. So definitely worth a go. And assuming things are OK re. Covid I may well get a season ticket for 2022. Great value. Best wishes, Howard
