I target sunfish a lot. I know largemouth, spotted bass and smallmouth are in the sunfish family....but I'm talking about the panfish variety of sunfish. My wife caught the biggest one I've ever seen (1.3lbs and just over 12" long). The girth on the fish in your video is almost unbelievable! Honestly, I'd rather catch a few of these hogs in your video than to fish all day and only come up with an 8lb largemouth. When large gills get sideways, they are little beasts. Really enjoyed this video. I wish more people would do good quality sunfish videos. I regularly catch sunfish in the 9-10" range and they are always a blast. I can't even begin to imagine how much fun this must have been!

I agree with you wholeheartedly! They are very under appreciated. Lets be honest, if a bluegill got to be as big as a 6 lb bass, the bluegill would destroy the bass when it comes to fighting! I am used to catching the 8-9 inchers and being pleased with that, so this was a real treat for me. And I had the choice to fish for big bass or big bluegill here...I guess its obvious what option I chose. I remember casting to some structure, feeling the bite, setting the hook into a 5 lb bass and actually being disappointed about the fact it was taking time away from the bluegill fishing.

As a boy12 yrs. Old setting on the banks of my favorite lake all by myself doing what I love FISHING ,when hooked a large heavy fish fighting hard swimming down to to bottom and doing everything to stay there.mud swirling line real and today straining as I was to . I after a 5 min. Struggle got sight of it covered with mud I thought it was a carp ! Taking out the water and washing it off , holy sh*t it's a blue Gill at least 18" long and about 4lbs caught in the moment near in tears my catch had been witnessed two pairs of fishermen on the banks 75 yds across from me ...screaming save it ...trophy one guy screams world record ! Looking at this miracle in my hands I could not think of it as a stiff stuffed prize. It's blue gold purple metallic scales had to live to make more memories of wonder for the next wild eyed boy with a fishing story to tell .

I am not sure I even remember the last time that I was watching a youtube video and heard the "drag" on a reel. Nice to know I am not the only one that enjoys the fight as well as the fish. So many people I see, set the hook like they are trying to pull a rusty nail through rhino hide, and then slingshot it up on the bank or the boat like they think they are in a big money tournament. Those are some amazing fish you are catching there. My biggest bluegill is half the weight of the ones that you were catching there. Gotta find me a spot like that!

sainstfisherman, you must not catch many big bass, otherwise you would know why some of the KZitem fishermen set the hook so hard. When you are fishing in lakes with potential 10+ pounders, you don't mess around while setting the hook. It only looks ridiculous when they bring up a 2 pounder, but they have no idea what size fish is hitting that hook when they go to set it, so better safe than sorry. Now, many lakes simply don't produce anything much over 4lbs, so those lakes you can back off a little on the hook set.

I have a cousin who has a pond on his property in Michigan . Over the last 40 years I’ve been fishing it everytime I visit from California. He also used to have a creek that went under an old RR Bridge that was fun to fish, but someone poisoned the waters up stream killing everything off. You really had to watch the snapping turtles under that bridge, but I digress. His pond has gone through a lot of phases being mostly Catfish to Big Mouth Bass to Crappie & Blue Gill . They have Hugeeee Crappie & Blue Gill. I throw everything back I catch. Sometimes I catch a smaller Blue Gill & will just let him run loose then a Big Mouth will come up & swallow him & I get to play him for a while until I’m tired of it & pull the Blue Gill out of his mouth while I’m still fighting him bring the Blue Gill in take it off the hook & set it free. Awesome Fun.

Back in the day...(prior to President Kennedy being assassinated) my dad and I would use our homemade John-Boat in our 8-acre pond and fish with crickets and night-crawlers. This was from 1960 to '63 and we would catch the same size Bluegill as you are doing in this video...2 lbs. +. I stopped back by the old place after 22 years in the USMC, after the kids, and Grandkids were all grown and I reminisced of 'Days-Gone-By". Using a cane-pole, the Bluegill are so thick and heavy that they caused the pole to start cracking and splintering up, and my stringer got so heavy that I had to drag it back to my truck. Keep up the Great times you are having my brother. Glad to see that some folks still know how to set things right.

Fished there in 2012. Great place. Used a 4-weight fly rod and caught over 30 coppernosed bluegill up to 3-1/2 pounds. Caught one Redbreast that was just at 18 inches long. Well worth the trip. Great vid, thanks for sharing these big bulls with us. But just a word about that plastic on your rod handles. The manufacturer puts that there to keep it from getting soiled by folks during the shopping phase.... people handling it to check the feel of the rod. Once purchased, that plastic comes off, which gives the purchaser/fisherman that extraordinary feel of natural cork. There's no better feel than that natural material. Otherwise, to leave it on, you're simply using a plastic rod handle. You may prefer plastic, but if you wanna feel the ultimate rod grip, rip that plastic off and free that cork. Thanks again!!

We used to have an old quarry where the perch and crappie swam around in schools. The bass looked like submarines, as they swam by in the super clear water. Our first sun perch caught was 2.5 lbs!! We had a scale in the box. The water is really cold, and goes down deep! I sank a sinker on my new line line, down in one area... At least 300 feet of 10 lb., brade. it took it all to the knot on the spool and never hit bottom!

There is a place here in Central Florida...Lakeland...called Saddle Creek. It's a Reclaimed Phosphate Pit turned into a Fishing Park with a series of Canals, Ponds and Tributaries all Connected. Has a Boat Launch, Bait and Tackle/ Covenient Store, Play Park, Picnic Areas and Public Restrooms. You can even Rent Canoes and Paddle Boats very reasonably. There are Panfish this size, Largemouth Bass, Catfish, Spec's and Nile Perch/ Tilapia. And it's FREE TO THE PUBLIC. There are also Alligators and Snakes so you have to be careful. I've also seen Wild Hogs, Raccoons, Oppossums, Deer and Red and Grey Foxes on the Banks while fishing there. The only restriction is Fish Limits on Bass, and Boats can only use Trolling Motors or Paddles. These Idiots charging Six Hundred a Day to Fish are just Thieves.

Bluegill are so fun to catch! We have a catch and release lake that has tons of bass trout and bluegill. The kill was getting high and all the fish started to regress in size. A good Bass was 2lbs a good trout was about 15”. Bluegill well they were so small they hardly fought. The DOW and the watershed workers worked together. Once a year 2 days you are allowed to keep 2 bass 2 trout and 20 bluegill each day. After the 1st year the kill rate was cut in half. The fish got bigger. The second year the kill rate was reduced again. The fish got bigger. 5 years later you catch on average over hand size bluegill. There are massive bass! The trout are hogs! Water management is good for the lake and the animals that live in it.

I target these sunfish or bluegill a lot when I was homeless back when I was a kid , They are easy too catch and you dont need a casting rod for most fish , Just a hook and some kind of scrap metal like a nut or a bolt would do just fine . All you need to do is to wrap the line in one hand nice and smooth and then under cast with the other . A 100 foot of fly line is wonderful and about 10 ft of 8 lb mono . Use a stick anything that floats as a bobber . I have used a sharp pointed small green stick as a hook of sorts . The fish takes it in and it lodges in the fish mouth . Size depends on what you want to catch . There is a lot of was to fish . You can even trap fist . I did that and it worked well . When your hungry you will use anything to get a bit to eat . I used to steal water from an out side of spickets on side of building and farm houses . I even took cold baths out where a spicket comes out of the ground by any barns . . I did not like to do that and at time it is shameful . I was raised in a bad manner ! I was raised with an cold fist . My dad made completely sure that us kids mind him . And Brain washed us . If we did not the we would get the hell beaten out of us or the belt buckle or even both . He beat me some bad that I carry the scars on my back to prove it . Then there is the emotional part that been put up on us . I cant count how many times I was hit with an object . Like wrenches , screw drive , rope , you name it he did it . It was so bad that even to this day I have trouble in making the right choice in life . All I ever known was to feed my self and work as long as it takes to finish the job from sun up to sun down . I didn't get a SS card until I was 18 or 19 . The sad thing is with this kind of disability it is really hard not to lie about ones self . It is embarrassing . Even to this day at night I can see the look on my dads face when he was whipping me . An evil grin and a red face . then the pains and the screaming and waking up in a sweet . Please pardon my spelling I use spell check a lot . I have dreams of what I had done to live . If anyone that had a mom & pop store around southern IL . I like to say I am so sorry that I stolen thing from you . When your 13 and to about 19 it is hard to find work and the most of the time you dont . So I resorted to steal . I wish I can tell you all it was and how hard it is when I was that age . Steal cans of food and things like that . Stolen packs of smokes . Yes I smoked as long as I can remember . A bad nasty habit . I am 60 now and still unstable and I can lose everything as fast or faster than what it took me to collect it . I think back too see what happy times I had . Well that is not many . I failed threw school at each grade the teachers would just pass me on . I did not get to go on field trips with my class mates . I waited in the principle office and I got a whipping . He would get his little paddle out with all the holes in it and just whip me a few times . Ho there was a fake tear for him . He tried . I could not help it that I was not born bright . I gave up life when I turned 50 . I gave out of any kind of hope or wishes . I am done . I am tired . All I look forward to do is to wait if I can to the time for me to die . Then I will pay the price for all the bad things I had done .

4 people for an all day freshwater fishing in a premier managed lake with trophy bass and bream. I think I would choose to put $600(2012 prices) into an offshore winter bluefin charter and maybe have some premier world class sushi. Grinding down a 500lbs bluefin would 'feel' like I got my moneys worth. To each his own (cool stuff tho never heard of this place before ) Thanks for posting

Bass is a trash fish to me anyway, they don't taste good. Bluegill, trout, catfish, those are where the flavor is.

You also got to know how to cook it . Bass is way better then catfish. Catfish stay in the dirt a lot so if you like dirt perfect.

I found a pound over 25 years ago near a larger pond and it was loaded with bluegill. I took my son and his friend this past weekend. They had the time of their lives. Me not so well carrying a 5 gallon bucket of fish out. We're having a fish fry Easter weekend. Keep the kids in the sport.

Ontario has lots of good sized bluegills and pumpinseed! I've caught a few plate size sunfish... the biggest at wawanosh lake was easily a pound, probably 1-1/4! It actually had fillets 😂 some big ones in Angola, Indiana too! They're a handful on light tackle..

There is a place north of Battle Creek, Michigan, where several hard to get to lakes exist on the Waubascon creek watershed. I have seen Bluegill in the 12-14" range, northern pike in the 40lb range, and large mouth bass in the 10lb range. These lakes may see a dozen anglers per year and embedded within a swamp that runs for nearly 20 miles.

The flood control canals around Huntsville/Madison, Alabama have 1.5 - 2 lbs bluegill with that big hump on their forehead. If they don't have a hump we throw them back, because we will fill the cooler with the big ones in 4 - 6 hours of fishing.

Some people do not know that the big Male Bluegill is the keeper of the nest. Predator fish often raid a bluegills nest that is not protected, or left unguarded by the male. Of course, they are hungry, as they stand watch, and would eat anything food like when it passed close, or could dart out after some food of insect or eatable type larva. When you take off the male from his guard post on the nest, its almost a certainty that the nest will be robbed. It is we anglers that take away the sole support of the tiny little eggs or hatchlings. I am glad you toss them back in the pond, or lake. I am the same way when its their nesting season each year. They certainly are fun to catch, but it gives me a thrill to see you turn them back also.

I used to fish a local farm pond that had similar size bluegills ranging from 10 to 13 inches in length and fat as hogs. I caught them on every single cast using a fly rod and an imitation of a freshwater grass shrimp. They hit it like a freight train.

These are originally breed in Georgia, in South Ga. Called 'Georgia Giants' and sold to lake stockers all over the world. So if you ever travel down hwy 16 in Ga. Look out for signs for Georgia Giants. Thats almost 40 years ago now. They sold bluegills and all kinds of pan fish, and with the floods some fry have spilled into a lot of creeks and waters all over. So hang on to your lines .

Nice fish. We live on a natural lake in Michigan and bluegills 10 1/2 inches are common. My biggest was 11 3/4". But they're not as heavy up here as they are in the south.
