Just hit me, if you think of the hook sizes in this way it's easier to understand: the numbered sizes are like negatives, while the aughts are like positives. -5 is a lower number than -2, 2 is a smaller number than 5. So the conversion would be -5 -> 5, 2 -> 2/0. I'm a math guy so this is simpler for me. The amount of information in covered in this was just nuts. Nobody else explained it all like this. Definitely appreciated!

In a ship, when you're trying to figure out what floor on the large vessel or submarine you are on, they have placards letting you know what level and frame of the vessel you are on. Well when they are describing the levels, 02/03/04 etc are the higher levels and 1/2/3/4 are the lower levels. Likewise hooks are described using mariner speak/language. 01/02/03/04 are the positive or upper sizes and 1/2/3/4 are the smaller or negative sizes.

Ought means zero, as in 1/0 is a zero size then after that they chain zeros so a 3/0 is a 000 size. I hope that helps make sense of the seeming contradiction.

So you're saying that all hooks have different gauges and if you are fishing light with a 6 pounds light with a 6 pounds to say 4 pounds you would need a smaller Gauge hook to suit that weight and Pounds to that leader line and main line. So if you've got a complete like set fishing set fishing rod you would definitely like to fish with a smaller gauge?

An aught is not the slash between the numbers. The aught is the zero in the size. Really hard to believe one can learn "everything you need to know" concerning hooks from someone that doesn't even have this basic knowledge about hook sizing.

Barb! That’s me! Lol Seriously though if you don’t already know the easiest way to remove a barbed hook from your skin I’ll tell you. If able clean the area that the hook is, and around it. Push the hook forward until the barb exits the skin. Clip the barb off and pull the hook backwards to remove. For serious injuries always seek professional help, and don’t forget your tetanus shot!
