I wanted to show you around a Thai fishing tackle shop to give you an idea of what gear you can buy here and what you may want to bring with you. The tackle here is some what limited compared to what you will find in the western world, but the tackle shops have everything you need. If you wanted to fly to Thailand and buy everything here that is completely possible but if you are used to your way of fishing / your style of gear and rigs you may be a little disappointed.
When considering what to bring with you well that is a personal choice and as baggage and weight is restricted on all flights its also a bit of a compromise. You can always rent the gear the lakes have but and this is a big BUT! Most of the time the gear has been well used to a point of abused. You have no way of knowing the quality of the line, clutch, gears etc. I have fished at plenty of the high-end lakes over the years and have seen some really bad quality gear passed to paying customers that have traveled ½ way around the world to fish. From nylon leaders that where already ½ way rubbed through to hooks that where as blunt as a spoon and reels that had a completely shot clutch. If your serious about fishing here and looking for that fish of a lifetime it will be worth loading some good quality reels with 80Lb braid and bringing them with you. You can always use the rods and for the most part the rods are just fine.
For end tackle feel free to bring what ever you need. Feeders, lead’s, floats, and beads can all be brought here. For Hooks and swivels I would be buying them here as you need hooks and swivels that are way stronger than U.K. carp fishing. But if your already into sea fishing or out looking for massive cats over in Spain I would think your gear will be perfect. Waggler floats here are limited so if you plan on using a waggler float bring your own.
What reels to bring? There are too many reels available for me to advise on. I am sure there are 100’s of good reels that can cope with bungsamran and places like that, that I am not even aware of. What I will say is the reels we are using are the Okuma Azores 8000 or the Shimano 12000 Baitrunners. So, size your real to give similar max drag and line capacities and you should be fine.
