I had been waiting for a little weather window to go surfcast a spot I have only fished once before. I went past this spot in my little Osprey last season and endeavored to return with the surfcaster. My first chance I got to fish it I picked up a couple nice fish. After picking up my new Okuma MC Nano surf rod a couple weeks ago, a nice little mid week weather window opened for us to head back to this spot X and try our luck once again.. We fish this spot half tide out to half tide in, the only thing that wasn't quite working for us was the tide. If we were going to fish it, it meant getting up at stupid stupid o'clock. We would be getting out of the little Osprey just after light. The drive is about an hour then a 15min run down the Harbour. Pea was keen to join me, so we set our clocks for 3am so we could be on the water at first light.
Daybreak arrived under the cover of fog, we had made our way out to the coast and I was wondering if I could actually find the place. The fog was thick but it wasn't going to matter once I turned on the Lowrance. I plotted a spot near by where we needed to be and we set off into the mist. Taking our time being safe, we reached our little muddy sand bank as the sun was trying to break through the fog. The tide was already past the half tide so we were probably only going to get 4-5hrs fishing in.
After finding our spot we beached the little Osprey and quickly set up to get our first baits out there. Getting here a bit late there was no time to waste and flicked my first bait out into the abyss. It was dead quiet and calm and felt airy as we stood in the fog. It was only about 3mtrs deep in front of us so maybe the fog was on our side. It didn't take long for my first bites to come on and after missing the first couple of hits IU was hooked up on my 3rd bait. Pea was still setting up as I had my first snap hitting the sand. It was a nice little snap at around 50cm and fat as.
My next flick out Pea was ready to follow suit, and we both flicked out into the fog. Pea's first couple fish were a small carrot, takeable but went back and a nice little 35cm trev which he kept for his lunch. It was starting to become fishy and soon we were both catching some good fish. We missed a couple big hits between the nice 50cm snaps we were landing. I also managed a nice carrot around 45cm which added a bit of color to the bin. Nothing big turned up for us through the morning but we had 6-7 nice snaps and a fat carrot in the bin. The tide was back on the rise and soon we found ourselves in knee deep water as we kept saying "just one more"
It had been a pretty cool morning fishing in the fog and I had put the new surf rod through its paces. We were back on board just as the fog lifted and 20minslater we found ourselves where our fun little Reel Kiwi Fishing adventure started - back at the ramp.
