In this video I really concentrate on catching largemouth bass out of shallow vegetation. Your Flipping and Pitching has to be accurate for you to make those difficult casts into the deep hols in that thick vegetation.
I started the day abit late for me to capetalise on that early morning bite. The Berkley J Walker 120 is an awesome bait to cover water in those shallow and shady areas of the dam. This bait is a bigger profile on the surface and this really could attract a bigger largemouth bass, don't be fulled it catches small bass aswell. this isn't an issue because it is fun no matter water to get a top water bite.
I realised on my mission to catch bass that the fish are going to be shallow and in heavy vegetation. The heat pushes those bass into cover and into deeper water. Deep water fishing isn't my strangest so I stuck to fishing that shallow vegetation. The chigger is a great soft plastic to draw out bass from deep vegetation with its crazy flapping arms. A black bait with a different glitter in it was key for me to catch bass.
I did target the deeper water colume with a deep diving jerkbait. The berkley stunner is a good quality hard bait. Alot of time I through it up on the bank into rocks and It came back in perfect condition. The Berkley Stunner 112+1 didn't do it for me on this bass fishing mission.
The chatterbait is a great way to fish shallow vegetation and deeper vegetation without compromising your fast pase fishing. Throwing the chatter bait in shallow grass and deeper grass in a great way to attrach any largemouth bass that sitting in the grass to cool off. I switched between a natural colour and dark colour for different water clarities. I found that the dirtier water was producing more chatterbait bites then in the clearer water.
The river is a huge part of largemouth bass fishing in south africa. Don't ever over look the river systems in any dam. The cooler flowing water gets those bass all hyped up and ready to eat anything that falles are floated infront of them. This is where flipping and pitching comes into play. Your accuracy and equipment is a key element to fishing this style of technique. You need a short enough rod to make those accurate casts but it needs to have the strength to be able to with stand that heavy cover like reeds grass or lilly pads. Your bass fishing reel needs to be a reel that can with stand heavy tention on the spool and body. Your drag needs to be something where you can jank on the bass to get out of cover or prevent them from going into heavier cover. You fishing line needs to be anything from 50 plus braid to be able to hold those largemouth bass from moving deeping into the heavy vegetation. Soft plastics I use are mostly a creature style bait that has a bigger profile in the water so the bass can see it or feel it easier when it drops past them. River systems are mostly dirt or stained water so use a darker lure to make it stick out more. The baits I use mostly will be a Berkley Creature Hawg or a Berkley Pitboss. The creature Hawg I will use 80% of the time and the other 20% a Pitboss. The creature hawg really shines due to it's maxscent and it motionless prfile when it falls through the water colume. This just attracts more bites for me.
The Conditions for the day were hot, 37,5 degrees by 2 o'clock. The wind gusts were up to 18Kmh
.Bird blue skies and water temp at 7:30 was 21 Degrees.
