The X27 is my favorite splitting tool. For years I split everything by hand. Mostly hickory with some white oak and locust mixed in, and I cut everything 18" to 24" long depending on what the Temps are when im going to burn it. I used 6 lb and 8 lb mauls for decades. When fishers finally made a 36" axe, I splurged on one and immediately wished they had came out with it first. Now, if it doesn't split in 3 or 4 swings, it goes on a hydraulic splitter (shoulders won't handle the mauls anymore). If I can't lift it onto the splitter, it gets noodled with the saw.

A few years ago, some friendly forest rangers here in the netherlands saw me work and lended me their X27 for a few hours. Immediately fell in love with it. Feels like I needed half as much strength for the same result. I was less tired and had waaaay more fun. Ordered one the very next day and refuse to use anything else. A great axe for people like me of normal strength/build, that don't look like Hercules like the OP :]

I used one of these all spring. A wind event brought down 2 large white oak trees and 1 larger post oak. All 3 were bigger than 30 inches about 4 feet above the ground. All were across the road at my farm. First job was to get them fully on the ground. Then clear the road and pasture they were in. To move all the rounds I was creating, most of them needed to be split. Tried a Wal-Mart maul. It was worthless. Got serious and drove an hour to town got a couple of splitting wedges, a Fiskars splitting axe and Fiskars splitting maul and 4lb 18" hammer. The splitting axe is great. The maul is even better. For tougher stuff, the wedges and hammer work best. Learned it isn't how hard you swing the maul. Let the weight of the maul do the work. Really green wood is heavy and tough to split. Heavy blows on a wedge, cause it to bounce out. Moderate blows, and the wedge starts digging in. So often, a round wouldn't show much until it suddenly splits. Wear heavy leather gloves for the handle shock. Makes a huge difference.

This was the first axe I actually ever bought, compared to pops old one it was night and day. Consumer wise it’s probably the best axe you can get from a Home Depot level of store. I split Hawaiian Keawe wood with it (very hardwood) so if it can split this it can split anything. Processed 2 entire monster Keawe trees with my chainsaw into rounds, and my fiskars for the splitting into firewood for my smoker. Yes there’s a lil reverb but if you hit true it’s minimal 🤙🔥 P.S if it breaks they replace it for free lifetime warranty! Can’t beat that 🤙

I own one of those. I agree. It’s a good thing that they put the finger swell on the end of the grip, cause the reverb is gonna fatigue your hands. You also need to put more velocity onto the swing to get it to split reliably. It is practically indestructible and accurate. I do like it better than a heavy maul. I prefer adding effort on the downswing, than the upswing.

Had my X27 for 7 years, splitting a few hundred cube a year and also using it to smack wedges into trees in between. It does have a decent bit of vibration and it’s not the most ergonomic axe but length and weight are spot on. greatest axe I've ever used. can swing it all day long and the head design is excellent. tough as hell too. the shock transfer is definitely more than hickory because there's not as much mass to absorb and dissipate that energy but not enough to really comment on unless you're really reaching for something negative to say about it. if it starts to fatigue your hands put on a pair of gloves though I've never felt a need to.
