One tip I would like to share with you is when you drill holes that have to be accurately placed you should use a center drill to make a pilot hole because they are short and stiff and they don't wobble when they hit the center punch marks like a regular drill bit will. Try it out I'm sure you will like the results, I'm just trying to help not being critical just using my years of experience in drilling.

Excellent instructions! Nice to know I'm doing at least some things the "right" way lol, I even have a couple homemade broaches shaped like yours with a single tooth 👍😉. I haven't actually inlayed a guard onto the ricasso yet, so I've found that it helps to have the guard face close to the final grit it will be finished at so that once I get that water-tight and light/shadow free fit up, I don't end up needing to remove even a thousandth or so, which has caused me to have to do a bit of extra filing in the past. I was thinking It might also help to let others following along with your online course know that they can just use sandpaper on a granite or glass surface plate if they don't have a disc grinder, which doesn't seem to be quite as common as a belt grinder in the shop. I'm looking forward to seeing the handle sculpting, I've been meaning to try that palm-scallop shape for a while. Thanks for sharing, guys :-)

Yes, thanks for the tip about letting people in the course know how to flatten things with sandpaper and a flat surface. I'll be sure to go over that in the course. That's what I did before the disk sander and still use that method from time to time but forgot to go over it so far in the course. Kyle

I never would have thought to use super glue and a piece of wood to hold the metal while grinding 😂. I normally just use a welding magnet although that wouldn't work for stainless as well as it does for regular steel. Any 400 series stainless sticks to a mag fairly well ( like the 416 you used) but different grades that contain more chromium are far less ferromagnetic. However, bending, forging, breaking, or cutting most stainless steel can expose the ferromagnetic properties. I'm sure a lot of people who watch Kyle are aware of this 😂. I'm just trying to share my knowledge on that. Perks of having worked in a metal recycling facility for years lol.

@KyleRoyerKnives

It can be really hard to get things nice and flat on the belt sander because the center of the belt is never perfectly flat against the platten.. With the disk sander the paper is glued to the flat disk which makes everything you sand on the disk pretty flat most of the time. Kyle

It takes a certain type of personality to make knives on this level Im realizing; I start to get frantic and antsy if Im not about finished with my knife by the end of the day AND fitting parts drives me crazy, actually makes me nauseous with the frustration. I discovered that pouring pewter in between handle parts keeps me from having to fit them and I havent looked back! HOWEVER, compared to your knives, my knives look like....shanks!

@@KyleRoyerKnives Yall should offer a beginner bladesmith kit, with a small propane forge and hose, a hammer, tongs, small anvil and a small piece of steel, say 5160...all the things that a potential knifemaker might have trouble getting around to finding. Then in one shipment theyd have all they need to start the courses, theyd have no excuse to delay. I did see that you offer a guide that directs where a person can buy supplies but this would simplify and expedite the process for the hesitant beginner. Just a thought...

The glue and wood is good. What about a magnet? Or a bar with an adjustable grip and magnet on the end? A jig to put on the end of the tang instead of hammering directly on the tang? Not criticizing just multitasking my brain as I watch you work. Good stuff Thank you Update I tried a magnet and it works but really needs to be strong. If you play with magnets you’ll notice their strength is front to back force so “pulling” but not so much side to side which is why you can slide a strong magnet but not pull it straight off. If it’s not strong enough the sander slides the piece off the magnet if you press hard. Recommend tape to protect the steel. Not perfect but an option. Recommend lock clamp or similar for Heavy grinding as it gets hot. Either way it’s always easier to control a bigger piece than a small one. I didn’t lose this one but anybody that’s ever ground or buffed a small piece has probably said those famous two words while standing there with empty hands listening to the bing bing bing of flying falling metal so you have some idea where it went… :)

I got to say you probably are one of the best I've seen . And tight fits like that definitely last forever. Perfect fits.. also I dont have but basic tools . If you are not in a hurry cracking that superglue bond, and want less fumes coming from heating the Cyanacrylate glue, you can put the piece in the freezer. That would also prevent warping of thin guards made from stainless. Coffee blend of my preference is a blend of coffee roasted by a small shop some 50 miles from my home. Very well worth the drive from where I live, but from any english language nation, it might be a bit far.

Nice quality vid, well done. Just one little addition, if you don´t have a rotary-tool you can file the ricasso at an taper at the very end, instead of grinding a 90° step. Also filing the handguard with the same taper gives you a pressfit with no need to close a gap and connect to any other surface up front. Shoult also be stronger since sharp corners increase the chance for stress fractures. One could also rround them off but fitting radii is way harder. Ragards Smarty

also important to have good files, maybe a bit of a obvious one but you know the difference when you get a good one vs a cheapo one on metal. But its nice you go into detail how you get it to fit right. I'm also making a little knife as a little try-out project and seeing how cheap equipment and not using the right tools to get it to fit, so now I need to do a shitload of grinding to get the handle to be square to the blade :(
