Not so happy with the sleep tracking. I find it difficult to wear something on my wrist to sleep, but it has been helpful. Seems it doesn’t start tracking sleep until an hour after I am sleeping. The metrics showed I sleep mostly in light, like you said. This was not the reason I purchased the tracker, so it was helpful to see your confusing statistics. As I have been exercising at home, I am happy with the results overall and appreciate your scientific approach.

Hi Elizabeth, thanks for your question. I think you cannot put a FitBit in Airplane mode. At least I cannot find the option. For travel fitbit says it is not required, so they must not have included it. They must not have considered your use case... Great video, thanks! But the Fitbit also gives total sleep time stats. If you ignore sleep stages (as I tend to do, knowing they aren't likely to be so accurate), and just lump (light/deep/REM) together vs awake, how accurate is the Fitbit Charge X against your EEG device as a percentage? And can you please comment on how you quantified sleep with he EEG device? Was this an automatic algorithm? And is there any data on how accurate this automatic algorithm is compared to manually scoring sleep stages? I'm a neuroscientist who partly works in a sleep lab, so any nerdy details I'll appreciate! Also, we were thinking of using fitbits in our lab for an upcoming sleep deprivation cognition project a PhD student of mine was thinking of running. Any chance you could share your data with us?

So, for the same price range of the Whoop, Oura, Fitbit, which would you choose? Or would you pick another? Gotta get one, but in order for it to be worth the investment, it must be somewhat accurate. Thanks for the content you are putting out!!
@TheQuantifiedScientist
4 жыл бұрын
Hi John! So, depending on what you are looking for the answer will be different. Personally, if I could only have one device I would chose a Fitbit, because: (1) I can also use it as a watch and also track my workouts on it (2) It does continuous heart rate monitoring (3) the sleep prediction seems to be the best out of these (*for the whoop I still have to test it, but I read a paper about it, and this makes me think that the whoop is likely roughly as good as the Oura, but I need to study it better). However, if you want actionable advice from the device, than the Oura ring is also very good. What I do not like about the Whoop is that it is subscription based (from what I remember), so you keep paying. This is my first response, but I actually want to do an overview of different fitness/health trackers at some point. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the research. I just need it now.I bought an iPhone watch s7 but the Sleep monitor apps are stupid and expensive. So I’m trying to get a fitbit only used to monitor my sleep. @onlineservices2050
4 жыл бұрын
If I adjust the total awake time it logs by 5% (subtract 5% of reported awake time) and add this to the light sleep time, will this be more accurate? Time awake during sleep is the most important metric for me.
@TheQuantifiedScientist
4 жыл бұрын
So, good question. I did not check the consistency of this misclassification of awake time over the nights yet. If it is consistent and you want to focus on time awake, you probably would not need to correct, since you probably just want to know if you had more or less awake time than average on a given night. So if all nights are wrong in the same way, it would not matter when comparing nights. Don't know if my answer makes sense? If you want to track both awake and light sleep, this is something you could consider, though I don't know if it would make a huge difference when comparing nights. (I added the same answer to the question you asked in the Dreem 2 Video :-) )?

How do you then improve your quality of sleep if you track to only have light on most nights of the month?
@TheQuantifiedScientist
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kayson! Thanks for your comment. So is your goal to have better sleep? Optimising your sleep if you have sleep problems is a really tricky problem. Experts have many recommendations, and I think you should experiment to see what works best for you. However, if you have severe problems, it is best to contact a professional. Some tips I got from a sleep expert (things to try): - Daylight bright light in the first hours after waking up (intense light). - No heavy or very fatty meals before sleep that are hard to digest (no lots of meat). No alcohol in the evenings. - Reduce stress - Sex and close social contact helps (a lot, more than people think, even kind of a prescription for restless leg syndrome). - Not sharing a bed (especially with someone that has sleep problems as well) might improve the situation. - Not being resentful when waking up in the night (going to pee) and not seeing that as a setback but just a chance to fall asleep again. - Eat healthy, but not too little, hunger symptoms deprive sleep. However, remember, I am just a random guy on the internet. If you have sleep problems, contact a health professional ;-) Have a great day!

Lol, you are hilarious man, I am sure you will find a girlfriend soon, geeks are the new cool. Hey my thoughts on this 1) I saw a older comparison of the Fitbit 1 to the EEG, I like better how you used the wooden bars to depict the sleep stages and how you had a nicely hand-draw chart to show the confusion and other data, your charts here are pretty horrible looking (sorry to be frank), pimp them up, or just keep using the manual approach it was really refreshing to have props to visualize data. 2) I take you are scientist from the NL ? don't smoke too much.. lol and for the future can you maintain the same confusion chart positions (on a previous video, you had the Fitbit on the Y axis and EGG on the X one, keep them consistent ! 3) I liked your (almost useless point) about how to use the data on your previous video, you should do more of that here, specially if you have your own EEG machine, for God sake teach us how to make the best of that data, even if the Fitbit gets it wrong 27% of the time. 4) Last, I just ordered a new Fitbit Charge 4, my prior Fitbit (1 of 2, not sure) lasted for 4 years and work wonders, I am very surprised to hear you cracked them all so quickly (the warranty is just 1 year), I wonder what kind of stress test you put them under ? Keep the good work ! and ping the videos over to someone in Fitbit, would be cool to have them responding officially to your videos (maybe they offer you a sponsorship or even a job?)
@TheQuantifiedScientist
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alberto! (1) Thanks, I liked the wooden bars too, but they were just too much work. I actually do like the other charts too :-P , but I play around with different styles. I think the one you meant was based on XKCD, a pretty awesome science comic creator. But I'll keep fiddling with different styles, so I am sure something more to your liking will come by soon ;-) (2) Yes, from the NL. Yes, the charts are not always consistent between videos, but I will generally keep them the same within a single video. It would be better to do both, but I might mix it up by mistake/design sometimes :-D (3) I'll do my best! Keep watching for more content :-) (4) Haha, don't know, but a friend of mine literally had 4 Fitbits die on him within 2 years... Would indeed be cool to get some feedback from Fitbit, but I guess I am still too small a fish at the moment ;-) Have a wonderful day, and thanks for watching!!

Hi Lionel, thanks for your comment! From what I could find online the HR-monitor, SpO2 sensor, gyro etc. seem to be the same. This makes some sense, given that they use they exact same housing, and it is probably just cheaper to stick with tried and tested technology. The GPS will of course not be used for the sleep measurements. But I'll definitively keep searching for info. Sleep prediction based on actigraphy (movement) is very difficult, but FitBit seems to do a pretty good job.

nice review. have you tested any garmin devices?? What do you think is the best sleep tracker?? I just purchased the latest polar device Grit X and it seems to give you a lot of detail. However, I don't have anyway of verifying the accuracy. thanks

Hi Dale, so I have only looked at a few devices so far. However, based on that (limited) experience: if you're looking for a (relatively) cheap sleep tracker that is also a fitness tracker, a FitBit appears to do quite well. If you really want to study sleep in detail specifically, the Dreem 2 appears to do quite well based on a scientific (non-peer-reviewed) paper I read. I have to say that the Oura ring and Mi Band 3 seemed to be sub-optimal. The Polar and Garmin devices I have not looked in to yet, so I cannot comment. Hope this helps at least a little bit

Great content. Very informative. Loved it. Definitely you should have a lot lot more views and subscribers. I would request you to please do a review of Honor band 5 sleep tracking. I read that Huawei trusleep sleep tracking is far superior than many other competing brands. Would be great to see your take on other sleep tracking devices other than Fitbit. Also if Fitbit justifies the price tag they carry. Thank you. Keep up the good work.

Great suggestion! I am hoping to do a few nights in the sleep lab while testing several devices somewhere in Sept/Oct if I can travel again :-) . Have a great day!

Great analisys. I just got the Huawei Band 4 pro and I think it underestimates the awake time. Kinda dissapointed. I think it also overestimates the step count.

Thanks man! If you are interested in step count, I made a video about that too: kzitem.info/news/bejne/jopo3qqNqmeWZqQ . Overestimation of steps is indeed a common thing. Fitbits do it too.

THank you again. I am also a FITBIT lover. Using CHarge 2 HR for 4+ years now.. changed the straps though. Its doing well, though needs. more ferquent charging and some times sleep tracking goes to old mode of 2 coloured line graphs only. That's not really helpful. I bought Huwaei Band 6, reasonably good, but I couldn't like their app fucntions, UI etc. It lacked staircase climbing, so I am forced to return the Huwaei. Looking to CHARGE HR 5 model sooner.. though HR 4 might also fit my needs.. Let me wait to see HR 5 and then decide. Can you throw more light on VO2 max graphs and HRV, Sleeping HR rate patterns please. I am 59 yrs, looking to maintain my heart and sleep patterns well with good health. Thank you again.
