I'm a 62 year old female and have worked out since my teenage years. At 59 I joined a high impact Zumba class late and SMOKED ALL the the 20 and 30 year old ladies in class. When class was over the instructor thanked me for joining the class and bringing so much energy to the class because they were trying to keep up with me, so sad. I'm a landlord and my workers don't think twice about asking me to help lift something heavy. I always thought eating a bunch of rabbit food was bs, because there was NO WAY I could carry 50-60 pounds of top soil or concrete eating a salad. Financially I could hire someone to do what I do, but why on earth would I pay them to have all that fun🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'm 38 and I have recently started my fitness journey. Been overweight pretty much all my life, not drastically, but never been fit or happy with my appearance. Although I dabbled in training when I was young and I've been pretty sporty playing rugby in my teens and 20s, I've always struggled with the balance between diet and fitness. In Sept I had ballooned to 230lbs at a height of 5'8", so I decided to get a health and nutrition coach. Through pretty much doing exactly what you have said in this video 5 days weight training 30mins cardio daily I've dropped 30lbs and I have another 30lbs in my sights to go before start to build muscle and add calories. I've fallen down the KZitem misinformation rabbit hole of late and your video is so refreshing as it's given me the faith that I am actually on the right path and I need to just keep going. I am the person who has done the fad diets and ended up heavier than when I started because they were quick fixes and didn't give me the tools I needed to sustain a healthy weight and lifestyle moving forward. I can speak from experience to what you say because I have been depressed, demotivated and frustrated with how I look. It affected me and everyone around me because I looked to blame everyone else for why I felt the way I did instead of looking at the reason I was feeling that way and taking action. I now love to go to the gym and train where as before I couldn't stomach it because of poor self-perception. Im amazed at how different I feel by just taking care of myself. Health and fitness isn't something that should have an end goal ......I'm hoping to make this a way of life and continue to improve and build upon what I have achieved. But most importantly not tear myself down because it's not happening fast enough or allowing all the marketing BS to cloud what is a healthy approach to maintaining healthy body and mind. Thanks for a refreshingly honest video.

Good on you mate, there's no such thing as magic, no matter how many times someone tries to tell you bla bla bla is it somehow. Keep things as simple as you can, until you've got a good few weeks of regular training under your belt. The hardest part of serious lifestyle change isn't the size of the goal, it's the time you give yourself to get on the right track. Once you've got that track record of regular attendance, you'll be loving the difference you can already feel, you haven't hurt yourself or burnt out from pushing too hard too soon. That time really let's you see what you do & don't enjoy. For example, my sis loves cardio but it bores me to tears, so I'll do way more resistance training.

Also, the once a weak 'cheat meal' can work for some. It works for you. But it can also turn into a 'cheat day' rather than a 'cheat meal' for some of us who have binge eating tendencies. it's like if you're a recovering alcoholic and allowing yourself to get drunk once per week, it's easy to backslide into old habits. Jeff Cavalier of Athlean-X has one cheat meal a year, which is a slice of cake. That's it. Different strokes for different folks.

Thanks for sharing what worked for you, and kudos for that and your own commitment and motivation in following through on your plan. Seems pretty sound dietary advice for most, when I went low carb I quickly noticed my joint mobility improved, my GP put that down to reduction in inflammation- which will also help cardio health. Recovery from exercise is such a thing, I'm increasingly thinking it might be more important than the exercise itself, I'm older than you and been trying HIT at home- slow movement under load to momentary muscle failure/ loss of form every 5-8 days, plus stretching & resisted movement and isometrics, which has certainly improved strength and stability but recovery quickly showed as key there. Now to pick the diet and pattern back up after a few months of no/low intensity due to illnesses and holiday indulgence.

I do intermittent fasting. That makes all my food taste really good. All meals feel like cheat meals, even when you're eating "healthy". People in the west don't even know what actual hunger feels like anymore. They think that having an empty stomach is hunger. Try not eating for a day. The next day you'll be downing broccoli like it's doughnuts. Also, spice up your food, add a little bit of taste, it will make it 100x better. Avoid sauces, as they very often have so many calories. Your salad that you think is healthy may be drowning in a dressing that makes the whole meal worse than having a burger or pizza. You don't have to count calories, but you should get a general idea how caloric are the foods you eat. Selenium is an element used in testosterone production. But don't take too much, as it will make it worse. 2-4 Brazil nuts per day max, it's better if they have that brown skin on them, as more selenium is there. Olive oil is good for you. Learn to make a nice vinaigrette and you'll be able to make a simple, good dressing that will make salads actually amazing.

Lost a few pounds over a month and that was enough motivation to go full bore with loosing weight and getting in shape. Started using a calorie/macro counter app to keep a calorie budget and started working out 3-4 days per week (upper lower split) with 20-30 minutes of cardio after. I'm now down to 190 lbs 6 months later and am still going strong. Eating more whole foods, adding weigh protein powder to keep my protein intake up around 160g/day, but still allowing myself a little treat every now and then. No foods are off limits, but foods high in calories and low in nutrition are kept to a minimum. I haven't looked this good since my early twenties.

I've been on a keto diet for about 25 years and it's worked very well for me but I am a sugar addict and I have binges sometimes and it really sets me back. Interesting what you say about target in certain areas in the gym I'm going to try. I started the gym again about 6 weeks ago after some setbacks and it's going well I don't smoke drink or take drugs so there's already an advantage there. I'm about 11 stone 5 at the moment I'm 60 years old

Hi Billy, good to hear you are hitting the gym. I run a low carb diet and I have run keto before. I find I have to be very strict if I cheat with carbs. I have a large bar of chocolate on a friday. I make sure I have no more in the house than that. Otherwise I would be tempted to binge!!

Most interesting thing here is the 80grams of lean meat. I think a lot of people eat too much protein per meal. Usually 20-25g is enough but if you just finished the gym I read the body can absorb more maybe even 40. Of course people on enhancements can probably absorb more.
@thatgearguy
Жыл бұрын
Although the body can only absorb a limited ammount it acts as a useful tool to prevent hunger by filling you while being lower in cals than most carbs and fats. For losing bodyfat a high protein diet is hard to beat. It also aids in grow of lean mass, but there is a point of dimishing benefit as with all things.

Brilliant, honest lucid advice mate cheers. I'm 51, two boys and used to exercise a lot. I still walk a lot, but I'm getting back into Kettlebells. Good to see some honesty in the fitness industry for a change. I see so many juice heads on Social media promoting bs products. Keep up the good work.

I'm 57, l don't squat ,deadlift or row because injuries over the years prevent it. Young people swear by those exercises but once you're " old", lol, l feel those are the worst things you can do to get in shape because the likelihood of injury is too great. As we age, it takes 3-4 times the amount of time to heal as it used to, not worth it.

Subscribed today. Very late to add a comment, but wanted to say how informative and inspiring this video is. I’m trying to get into better shape at 52 and it’s the discipline of what I eat and drink that is definitely the main issue. I go to the gym 5 times a week, but perhaps focussing on the wrong exercises. Mostly HIIT type classes. Thank you for sharing the diet and fitness regime. It’s re-inspired me to sort my diet and fine tune my exercise of choice. Thank you.

agreed. I decided to do the same thing June of 21. I have a similar background as far as past fitness and injuries. I haven't lost all the weight yet as I have been focusing on gaining muscle. I'm 6'4" so I want to fill my frame out a bit more before I cut the fat. I'm not excessively overweight, just need to lose about 40 lbs. Did a mini cut about 9 months ago and lost 20 lbs so I know it's possible. So far I've gained about 30 lbs of muscle/ water so I'm extremely happy with where I'm at. Thanks for making the video and challenging the narrative.

Was practicing BJJ, few years back, during one practice herniated a lower disk, in my back, pressed on right leg sciatic nerve, worst pain I ever felt, took a full year to clear up. I really like grappling, BJJ and wrestling, but stepped away, focused more on standup, defense, like boxing, best decision for me, in my late 50's still lifting weights, hiking with heavy pack, pain free.

Great job. 69 year old natural carnivore bodybuilder here. My videos shows that even old people can be in great shape. Strength is the key from getting elderly. I never had a trainer in 46 years of resistance training. If you don't challenge yourself you can't grow. I agree with everything you said. I think sugar is just as bad for you as cigarettes are. Just cutting out all types of sugar will make an amazing difference. A 45 minute walk 4 times a week will take you a long way toward your goal.

Great info! I'm 53. Started training again at 47. Ive gotten much stronger (than when I started of course) but still don't have visible abs. I'm not interested in being "ripped" per se, but I would like to drop another 20lbs. my question is how did you feel taking all sets to failure but also eating in a deficit to drop the weight? Thanks for your honest point of view! Quite valuable these days.
@thatgearguy

Good for you. I felt fine, I found I needed a good nights sleep but other than that I had no issues. I felt a lot better than I did on the beer and pizza diet!! Shedding that last bodyfat to expose abs is more gruelling for sure. That is why most do not do it but it is achieveable, I just focus on my once a week cheat meal to keep me from being too hangry!!
@vancemcnulty8242
Жыл бұрын
Taking all sets to failure is not necessary, consistently adding weight to the bar or beating rep goals is and this is only done through disciplined consistency over months. What happens during any single workout is far less important unless you are using weights that are injurious. The research is clear about losing bodyfat and has been for decades. You must be in a caloric deficit. How you get into a deficit and remain there long enough to reach your goal is based on your own individual needs.

I just skip meals and do fasting days once or twice a week. It's easier for me. And in general easier than eating small portions four/five times a day. Well at least for me. Then, if I am really up to it, or I just came back from one of those all inclusive vacations, I just do a 7 days fast. Or as long as I can handle. My record is 12 days so far. Works wonders.
@thatgearguy

Fasting has some great health benefits but it is not great for retaining or building muscle. I guess a happy medium is intermittent fasting. We are all different and have our own goals, sounds like you are very happy with it.
