I am attending the 2024 International Plant Based Nutrition Healthcare Conference virtually and learning SO much! I'm most excited about what I learned from Dr. Brooke Goldner regarding reversing diseases thought to be chronic and permanent through diet combined with other lifestyle factors such as getting enough sleep, exercises, and having healthy relationships with yourself and others. Dr. Goldner has a website www.smoothieshred.com that has recipes for green smoothies that she uses as part of the treatment plan to help her patients heal well and reverse health issues including auto-immune diseases!
To make this smoothie, pack kale into the blender and push down to get a lot of greens in there so that the kale fills up 3/4 (75%) of the blender. Then add 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) of whole flaxseed (you can add up to 1/2 cup like I did in this video). Then fill the rest of the blender with fruit. This can be banana, blueberry, pineapple, or any other fruits you like. Pour water into the blender until the water level is even with the top of the kale. Then blend.
Depending on how big your blender is, you can get up to 5-6 servings of vegetables and fruit in your diet if you drink the whole contents throughout the day. The fiber helps your microbiome get the food it needs to be happy. And when the microbiome is happy, it helps us have a strong immune system that helps us heal well and quickly. There are a ton of vitamins and potassium and other minerals in here. There is very little sodium. And the flaxseed provides omega-3 fatty acids that help our cell membranes function properly to get nutrients into the cell and waste out. In addition, the fat from the flaxseed helps your body absorb more of the beneficial phytochemicals from the kale and fruit.
One caution is to be careful getting too much water too fast. Most people don't drink enough water and are mildly dehydrated throughout the day. But you can also get too much water. This smoothie has a lot of water that can help you hydrate and be healthy, but if you are drinking a bunch all at once, it can cause hyponatremia that is characterized by foggy thinking/slight confusion and eventually headache and could become more serious if you keeping drinking water without giving your body time to pee out the excess. So listen to your body because it tells you what it needs and how things are going.
