Government has released 4.5 million Kwacha under emergency works towards the construction of five bridges in Mafinga district.
Mafinga Council Secretary JOSEPH NONDE says the funds are from the ministry of Local Government under the emergency fund for crossing points.
Mr NONDE says the five bridges are crucial for improving infrastructure and connectivity in the district.
Speaking in an interview with journalists, Mr NONDE however says the local authority plans to use the Constituency Development fund for some crossing points in the district.
He says bridges will also improve access to social services such as health care and education.
And Council Chairperson DUNCAN KAONGA says the bridge construction projects will facilitate trade, movement of people and boost the local economy.
Meanwhile, Mafinga Member of Parliament, ROBERT CHABINGA who toured the Choma bridge to check on works says the initiative to construct the bridges in the district will enhance the transportation network.
Mr. CHABINGA has also expressed happiness that a local contractor has been granted the opportunity to undertake the bridge project.
He has since called on the government to release more funds for the project so that works are expedited before the rainy season.
