Ha! Yes, that's my thoughts exactly! So many card games just add (often minuscule) changes... It sort of upsets me, I feel short changed. We have a bunch of the culprits, the card game versions of dog and quirkle, for example. They are... fine. Easy to transport. I'd rather play Doppelkopf, though. I love it when these guys scrunch themselves into a camera frame that's zoomed in really close. First of all it's smart because it prioritizes the game and conveys a level of intimacy. But it's also funny watching them squirm to get into frame like the game itself doesn't want them in the shot and there awkwardly forcing their way in.

Five Three Five is one of those rare games where the rules actually make it sound more fun than it actually is. Despite my praise for the elegance of certain design choices here, this is a game that feels like it plays itself. It's not totally clear to me why the hands so rarely provide interesting tactical choices. But it is clear that lengthening the game by playing to a higher score is NOT the answer, as this would likely result in even more lopsided scores. It's not a good sign when the only thing keeping a game from getting an even lower rating is the fact that it you don't have to play it for very long.
@tigriscallidus4477

I havent played this game, but in other ladder climbing games often the challenge comes from "should I play the cards which I can or should I keep them for a better hand". Here this might be a bit less the case, since you cant put more than 5 ascending cards down at the same time anyway. And being able to add a single card to a double or tripple means that having single cards in your hand left is not as deadly as in other such games.

The theme for this game bugs me a little bit. I was sure you had missed something but found in the rules (on the Kickstarter) this text: "*Card group is only used for flavor. There is no gameplay significance." This seems odd for something that is such a prominent part of the card design and that looks like what would function as a "suit". In the portion of the rules that describes the parts of the card they label this the "card group" (but then need to state right there that it is meaningless). The rules also discuss "weather cards" (also visually true, but also meaningless) which also kept me wondering until I found the text. Makes me wonder if perhaps the original Japanese version made use of this, or perhaps had an "advanced" game, or perhaps rules that were planned but that didn't work out. I suppose if that were the case then you'd need more than just the three "card groups".

Shout out to Skyjo. A small and simple card game just like this, that my neighbors and I got into. My favorite part is that you would build a little grid and scored the cards in lines. This took up tablespace, so not a good pub game, but I loved not having to hold a hand. Gets tiresome you know?

I've heard this card game called many different things over the years - on wikipedia it's listed as "President (card game)". Looks like they've tweaked it just enough to claim it's something original and put it in a box. I mean, I love the game, but I wouldn't want to pay someone for a standalone copy that you can't use for other card games... am I missing something?
