I feel this isn't exactly obscure, but Sea Of Stars, made by Sabotage Studios makers of The Messenger, comes out this year. There's a demo out already. Sea Of Stars takes inspiration from classic SNES RPGS like Chrono Trigger. Now The Messenger is on my personal Top 10 favorite games of all time list, so I'm incredibly excited to see what comes of Sea Of Stars.

Tainted Grail I'm really hoping will be well made. While far from the first game of its style, people are going to compare it to Skyrim. Having an indie game do Bethesda's job better would hopefully light a fire up their butt & make them do better. I think people forget just how many big game series started off as passion projects from small indie teams & TES is no different. Its part of what makes indies so exciting.

They all seem very interesting, both for their respective settings and the variety they show as a bunch (Desperado Ghost Pirates, Indiana Noir, Anno Occultist, King Arthur in Effigiem, and Magick vs Steampunk the Reimagining). Most interesting to me, personally: - "Lamplighters League" , as I cannot wait to see what the developers of the Shadowrun trilogy can come up to; - "New Arc Line", because it isn't hiding at all its inspiration from my beloved "Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura", with "Arc" in the title and that Zeppelin featuring prominently in the title's graphics. I really loved to see these two announced, basically because I'm old I guess. But I really hope they can recreate in me the feel and interest from back then, when I played the older games they each relate to. ... BTW, I just learned about another RPG getting its official release date of 09.06.23 (Wait: European reading or USA reading? June or September? I hate this kind of conflicting standards!) It's not exactly indie, though. Thanks for your videos!

Thanks for the video. Those were indeed five titles I missed. This is somewhat outside your traditional video formula, but any chance you will discuss Denuvo? Every AAA title I've seen release this year has it: Octopath Traveler 2, Hogwarts Legacy, Company of Heroes 3. Even the upcoming RE4 will have it. I think it was Doom Eternal that created a significant enough PR backlash that they took it down, but I guess that was a pyric victory. Part of this reminds me of your earlier conversation regarding Hasbro and DnD. It's just a Sand People strategy. It's easy to frighten one, but they'll be back, and in greater numbers. Onward to 200k. All glory to the algorithm.

Particularly the latter - a spiritual successor to Arcanum would be a real treat. Still, I'm going to keep my expectations low so that I can't feel the bite of disappointment in case it doesn't live up to that (...looking at you, Tides of Numenera). Interesting list. The Thaumaturge combat I've noticed at min 5:00 in the video reminds me big time of Tainted Grail: Conquest which is a very good isometric dark fantasy roguelite with turnbased card combat that I recommend you check if you have not yet. Shadow Gambit, I saw before and it piqued my interest. Seems like Shadow Tactics but in ghost pirate setting which is badass, tbh. New Arc Line looks very interesting, from what I saw in the trailer, it feels like it might be a mix of DA, NWN and Arcanum. The upcoming games I'm personally hyped for are Mask of the Rose and Ravenbound which should be coming out by the end of the month according to the devs and Hades 2 which I hope comes out this year.

Shadow Gambit is part of a niche sub genre (Commandos-like/ Real Time Stealth Tactics) of a niche genre of games (Real Time Tactics (RTT)) as the name imply that sub-genre came about due the Commandos series of games from the late 90s early 2000s and those three games represent about a quarter of the games in the genre. Mimimi (the studio behind Shadow Gambit) was solely responsible for the revival of the genre, Shadow Tactics' success gave them the opportunity to do Desperados 3 and continue their work with this new one. I'm honestly super excited to see such a revival and that they continue to thrive is just great. Also really excited for Harebrained Schemes new game, just hoping for once the game isn't buggy and unoptimized which has been a problem for all their titles at launch and even today all of them are only borderline ok.

Shadow Gambit looks interesting and so stoked about the Lamplighter's League. And... New Arc Line... definitely seems a lot like Arcanum. 100% following that! Just watched their dev journal from a couple months back and went to the studio's website (they are called Dreamate). They are a Czech/Ukrainian studio, and despite the war in Ukraine, are still plugging along on the development and even said in the dev journal that the war has motivated them to work even harder and to make sure that the game gets out. So, good for them, and that is impressive that they didn't decide to postpone or cancel the project. 3 words: ARCANUM. DRAGONS. ZEPELLINS.

I haven't been able to really enjoy a newer RPG in a while like I used to- it seems like the genre is kind of saturated nowadays with Souls-like games and more strategy focused titles. I really personally prefer games with long narratives; story based with good characters and a moldable protagonist. It seems like, since the success of Disco Elysium, all of the narrative/reading-based RPGs are ending up with preset protagonists, which is one type of RPG I do not enjoy at all. In my opinion, the core of RPGs is the roleplaying element- to be able to make your character and interact with the world through their eyes. I think the genre is getting entirely too broad to the point that I no longer get excited when I hear "new RPG" until after I extensively research it. I'm really surprised no other company has really swooped in to fill the hole Bioware left behind. Spiders did alright with Greedfall (still more of an older title these days) and I would love to have more Pillars of Eternity- not to mention that an Elder Scrolls sized hole is in many of our hearts nowadays. Overall with with advent of voice acting for everything, and excessively fancy graphics, I'm not even sure if a new Elder Scrolls or story heavy RPG would be able to support the immortalizing modding community older games have anyway. Baldur's Gate 3 is obviously a diamond that fills a lot of these gaps for me, but I don't really know just how extensive modding really will end up to be for it as far as people adding their own story content and whatnot. It seems like, with how legendary Mass Effect and Dragon Age are/were, more developers would be rushing to scratch that itch for people again. It's kind of an enigma to me.
