What mic are you using? Are you EQing on the way in? What’s your chain?
@spinlightstudios
Жыл бұрын
@@blvkqmusicgroup I believe Jake tracked with a u87ai for this song, with a little bit of Audioscape Opto compression on the way. No EQ. Correct me if I’m wrong though Jake.

I agree that that PRO MB was the money maker in that chain. Great video as always!

thank you for sharing, really nice video. A question: can you tell us about the delay you used?
@spinlightstudios
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Mate, the delay is soundtoys echo boy, dual echo, 1/8 and 1/4 note delays. Just adds some nice space in the mix, it’s not very noticeable once everything is going on, but gives the vocal some depth!

If you have harsh Vocals its not completely your fault the first part of the Vocal chain... yess you guessed it right The Microphone might be the causing factor. Cheap Mics between 300 to 900 dollars are usually have cheaper Chinese made capsules and cheap smd components which sounds thin and have no clarity at top-end which in result harsh vocals... so change your mic first cause at mixing stage those serial compressors we love tend to surface every harshness in our mics

Absolutely, best to get it right at the source. But even on good mics, they can be the wrong for the singer - or even just the singer has a harsh/bright tone. So many factors at play!

When I listen to every step I wonder whether the Tape was needed, since you are dealing with these frequencies later on anyway. Isn't the thing it really does not too subtle to hear in the mix?

The multiband compressor and baby audio smooth operators are only compressing frequencies that are jumping past the threshold I set. Whereas the tape is a static change to the whole sound. The main thing the tape was doing was rolling off some airy top end. Probably could be achieved with an EQ, but i liked the way. It rounded the vocals off a little before I started the multiband and baby audio compression. It’s all preferential in the end, this exact chain wouldn’t work on every vocal, but it just gives some ideas on ways to chill out a bright vocal :)

Really good advice. To my ear, the end product is sounding a bit on the dull side. Any ideas for brightening it up after this process?
@spinlightstudios

Thanks. If you didn’t want it as warm, just back off the processing amount. So less multiband compression, maybe skip the high frequency trim on the tape, or do less. The client and myself were really happy with the final product, just comes back to preference and what each of us perceive as a good mix I guess! The country scene likes to push vocal warmth pretty hard. Typically I would gravitate to a brighter sound, but the reference I was working off sounded very similar!

Do I need smoothe operator if I have soothe 2? Never seen smooth operator before but I'm guessing it's the same thing?

If you own soothe 2, you most likely don’t need smooth operator! Pretty much the same thing, but soothe 2 has more options, smooth operator is a very simple design and layout.
