Cool thank for this.. mine just started to have the same issue..

Hey, thanks for making this. I was just checking KZitem to see if the happened to anybody else; sure enough, up popped your video. I have two P727 lights and I really like them a lot... but the hinge mechanism is a serious weak point. Not just because of the potential for wiring failure, but also because you have to adjust/re-tighten it all the time. On top of all that, the round, green ABS discs on either side of the hinge appear to be breaking down and forming cracks as time passes. Not sure what I'm gonna do to repair that, when they eventually crumble. Yesterday, one of mine failed exactly as yours did, so I pulled off the side disc that has the screw slot in it. Sure enough, one of the wires was snapped. Luckily there was just enough length remaining after cleaning up the wire ends, that I could solder and heat-shrink it -- exactly what you suggested as an alternative fix. But the next time the wire fails (and I'm sure it will), I'll have to find some small gauge, flexible wire and replace the whole segment. By the way, I'm impressed you were able to fit a butt connector in there, it's a pretty tight space! This is a ridiculous design flaw. I mean, it's not like they didn't know that wire was going to have to move and flex. To make matters worse, the smaller, plastic, inner disc you have to remove (with the two tiny screws in it) rotates and rubs against the wires as you move the hinge. That isn't a good arrangement either. They could've avoided that by merely making the opening a fraction of a millimeter larger. And holy crap, what's that tacky goo they have spread all over in there? Messy! All in all, this seems like this is a breakdown that many (if not all) P727s will eventually suffer. It's not the hardest fix in the world if you're reasonably handy... but I bet many people will hurl the thing straight into the f*ck-it bucket. What a shame, it could've been so easily avoided with better design.

Hinge on mine failed too but never had problems with the top half light going out or wires breaking, at least not yet. The wires actually seem like an easy fix at least. I'm not sure what to do with the hinge? I called Ryobi (since mine is less than 3yrs old), they sent me a new one, didn't want the old one back. So that was nice. However I suspect the same thing will happen to the hinge on the replacement over time as they never changed the design. As you say, the plastic part on the other side basically just disintegrated on mine meaning no way to tighten it anymore. I'm wondering if I can't just replace it with a long enough machine-thread bolt and a wing nut on the other side, and make the hinge on my old one work well again? It's a shame the hinge is so bad--I think the main issue is, "too much plastic"--because it's a fantastic light otherwise IMO.

Following up on my own post, it seems the fix for the hinge was incredibly easy. I didn't really delve into it before because I didn't know if they'd want the old light back. Since they didn't now I dug into it. The flaw in Ryobi's design is the bolt side of the hinge (knurled, hex head) is secured in place only by the plastic cap (the side with the "Ryobi" text). That green *plastic* piece not only retains/counter-holds the hex head but it also *holds pressure* against the plates inside which apply pressure to the hinge so it has resistance. Incredibly stupid because every time it gets loose and you tighten it (and if you over tighten it especially) the plastic cap is stressed...and eventually cracks and crumbles, like mine did. Below that cap the bolt goes through but does not contact the little metal plate and cup which is what gets pressurised. This is really short-sighted of them but results in a super easy fix. All one has to do if that cap breaks is put the bolt through an appropriate size washer (I couldn't find the exact size on hand so I used two washers, progressively) and then the *bolt* holds the pressure against the hing, not the stupid plastic cap. In other words metal is holding all the force. Well except the hinge itself and the cap on the other side is plastic (but at least the threaded insert is metal there). This is so much smarter. If they did this the cap would have just been decorative, not load bearing. Not sure what they were thinking but I fixed mine like this. I even popped the broken pieces of the cap back in for cosmetics and just held it together/on with some clear tape. If the other side cap (with the "coin" slot on it) ever breaks the solution would be the same thing--just use a nut of the correct size and a washer or two to hold against the plates. It's crazy Ryobi could essentially fix this design with... *ONE. Metal. Washer. * Anyway now I have a second light and know what to do if/when it breaks. Kind of mind blowing 🤯 they didn't think to use...a metal washer instead of relying on plastic.

@@rolandm9750 Roland, thanks for the write-up, I might need that "washer tip" in the future! The wiring fix wasn't bad for anybody that can solder, but the only catch is "where" it might break. Space inside that hinge is kind of limited. Thus if the break in the wire is too close to its passages through the plastic, or has been trimmed/fixed before, it might not be possible to do it "in place." However, should any of that be an issue, one could always replace a segment of the wire with some other flexible stranded wire, and bridge the hinge entirely. It's not like there's a lot of amps pushing through that wire, even some cheap speaker wire should work.

Thank you, this saved me opening up everything else - took me right to the problem. My lamp is an R18ALF, but it seems otherwise very similar.

Update: it happened again, the second time I drilled a hole in the top and bottom near the hinge, rewired the connection through the drilled holes outside of the light and loomed the wire to bypass the hinge entirely. I ain't paying for a new light! 😂 best of luck guys
