I'm snowboarding for more than 26 years. My technique maybe a lite old school, but my upper body is mostly facing the direction I'm headed in. I dont have any issues with stability and I rip down the mountain and its very seldom that I'm being overtaking by a skiër or snowboarder. Controle and stability mostly come down to how well you are able to keep pressure on your edge through a turn plus off course the correct movement of your hips. Back in the days there where turning methods where changes pressure on your board by moving your body up and down. Sound a bit silly but ok. The down side was that at some point in the turn your legs where more stretched out which reduced your ability to cope with changes in terain, resulting in los of edge pressure and thereby loosing grip. With the general trend that everybody wants to stand duck although they dont know how to ride forward, let alone backwards, described body position may make sense for that particular stands.
@shreddagorge

You describe the way I learned to ride (and race), driving the body forward and down the hill with pelvis in basic alignment with the line, and using your hips and legs to drive from rail to rail. Monoski riding was much the same, and I was also taught to drive the back knee basically into the front calf. This video keeps popping up as recommended, but I scratch my head because it seems like he's showing the way I ride as improper, and I've been riding at least as long as you and took lessons to race (finishing upper middle, generally - maybe I'd have been on the podium if I rode like this video sez? ;).

@@clydemccoy1768 I don't really believe in absolutism, hence your point also your reference to any snowboard instructor. This channel is good, what this guy is teaching isn't bad, actually better than many paid instructors one can get. But is it absolute truth? I doubt it, I think the guy himself knew better to doubt that too. He is just saying so because this is a tutorial for intermediate almost duckish stance riders. He is not discussing possibilities to his equals, but teaching those less capable than him. A good teacher knows to narrow down and simplify what you meant to say. Especially he is not teaching one on one, but to a general audience, so it's natural for him to teach this method and method alone, as it is more relevant to his targeted general audience, which I suspect is intermediate all mountain leaning towards freestyle riders. But if you check out those big mountain freeriders, you'll see what many of those guys on the opposite side are arguing is common methodology used and practical for their purposes/terrain of riding. Even the pros, top athletes such as Xavier De La Rue in his tutorial said similar things to what those guys are thinking and finding. So I doubt his "little old school" methods is what you say "bad", it may simply mean, he is not same type of rider riding similar terrain/level as you are. By saying others' bad without fully understand or even try to understand what they're coming from and their reasons, to me is worse. As truly, you're just limiting yourself to the vast amount of knowledge and possibilities out there. There is a whole big world out there, you're denying yourself to. Would be interesting though to hear from those whom knows both sides and can give a more detailed and informative breakdown/comparison of those two methods in discussion. I am confused around it... and really keen to know, as I think I am crossing over a bit to freeride these days, and do find, naturally your body position is much more open in such conditions, and you're tempted to re-dial your stance from duckish to both forward a bit.

When I ride I slow the board by angling the back part with whichever foot is in the back using its heel or toe mostly. When snowboarding, you can still counter rotate for those quick stops and quick brakes. For normal riding, just like longboarding, you really want to trust on leaning with you upper body into the direction you want to go. Snowboarders are often initially afraid to go from toe to heel by just leaning backwards (down hill) or vise versa. Hence why they develop the bad habit shown in this video, flicking their back leg out to turn. I know in downhill longboarding the stance is different, but you get the idea.

I don't know what to say ... I won't be the best snowboarder but I've been practicing it for 30 years and I think that at least you don't want to swing from toes to heels and vice versa, to have a smoother movement it is important to rotate your torso downstream, make a kind of sway while making the turns. If you do it in a fluid way, even aesthetically it is a very harmonious movement ... I have always thought that those who always remain still, in line with their body, are not a real freerider but someone who only goes to parks. Peace

alignment ok . I was taught to turn 'feet first' and the kness, hips and shoulders follow. Never to generate a turn with the shoulders. this is slightly different - will try.

Simon Marr not sure if they mention it in video to start from too(it’s not like that), but you should do all in one time. It’s just when you learn how to ride , you learn it from bottom to upper body as you said.

While the "incorrect technique" examples are correct, I have to disagree with this somewhat. Upper body should be quiet with shoulders perpendicular to the fall line. Use hip angulation to drive power into your sodecut.

You know. I'm starting to agree with you. I think this works if your learning early on. So you keep your weight centered on the board. . But you past that. Yeah the main goal should silent top.

@@jeebs9 What's a silent top? Where the hips and shoulders are always aligned with the board with no rotation/twisting of the upper body?
@sendinit6413

Hey his upper body is super quiet because he's not square to the fall line. He's actually parallel to his ride line and is carving with excellent form

I was trying this a lot last winter, but I found that when coming out of toe turns, my board would carry on turning and actually heading up hill, or further than I wanted. Then the back foot would slip out the other way, I actually fell quite a few times, as couldn’t really nail it, even though it was all quite slow speed. Enjoyed riding aligned while it lasted however!

We will make a video on this, Since it is complex. But that is a great question to ask Nev. He could give you a far better answer than I could. He does a live session every week on ADDICTION+ and can discuss this directly with you. We offer a 30 day free trial and therefore, feel free to sign up, join the session, get the answers from Nev. You won't be charged anything until after the first 30 days and you can cancel at any time.

Is it more common to ride out of alignment on more difficult runs? I feel like I do this more on difficult turns. I'll have my husband check this weekend and will try the pants and pole tricks

I must agree with slimeone, as I recently did a triple 360 cartwheel down a diamond run and everything went into slow motion. It was by the third cartwheel when I felt perfectly aligned. I was upside down on my head looking at the sun in the sky and I entered into trance and had a zen moment. 😎

A lot of people in these comments are confused between aligned (as in riding with a bladed stance) and counter rotation. You can ride with your whole body facing down hill and still not use counter rotation while turning, that's the point. He rides slowly in the video so you can see the idea, but watch any pro snowboarder and they ride just like this, stale riding slope to trice riding giant AK lines. Speed checking using counter rotation should be used as a last resort as it's unstable, you can control your speed without counter rotating almost all the time.

I feel like the problem comes from wanting to see downhill when on your toe side edge causing your body to open up. At 0:34 you're totally blind to someone coming up behind you and riding along your left side.

Wait though, I. His turns he’s not looking down the mountain, especially when turning from toe side to heel side there’s no way he is seeing where he is about to be going. Shouldn’t you be looking where you are going so you can expect the terrain and bit hit anyone?

Once you get a feel for carving your head will aways be moving to take in all the information you can:) But then it will come back so you are in the right spot to preform the maneuver:)

Nothing wrong with stability. Especially when locking in a carve. But eventually those shoulders will need to go back to pointing downhill if you want to link those turns.

Nev, eher is the true? You say upper and lower body must be aligned. But some other very good snowboarders say the opposite. I consider myself intermediate to advance rider. In general I agree with you but I don't think alignment is appropriate for tree riding. Thank you very much for doing snowboard addiction

I'm guilty of this. But only on very steep pists. If you drive slowly like in the video it is easier to balance and keep your body aligned. On a black pist I counter-rotate to keep balance and prevent the board from going too fast. How do you more experienced riders feel? Do you use this trick also on black pists?
