What things have you been struggling with in your art recently?

Expression definately x) I'm always so scared to break the anatomy that my characters become pretty stiff. I'm trying to work on that now x) Great video btw!

I feel like I don't really have a natural flow to mine, like I only started in june and have been studying perspective and anatomy pretty often yet I lack things like pen control and just an understanding of what makes something look good. It's weird. I think time'll fix it though.

Consistent practice is one thing I struggle with. I draw as a hobby, but I still want to improve. Also, I tend to draw only one type of character, and my poses are kind of rigid. Really love your content, by the way. Your laid-back style makes art feel much more welcoming. Thinkin' of becoming a patron myself!

I've been really struggling trying to get my art to feel more free, but also improve at that same time. I feel like maybe it may be the conflict of school in the way, making me not able to draw and practice as much, but it may also be my own personal struggles too. Great content as always, Brookes, cant wait for the next vid!

I feel like video games lose a lot of their gesture when they make the art style more realistic. Yeah everyone's a clumsy sandbag in real life but I like when art exaggerates things.

Definitely! Its like the difference between cart racers and say, Forza or Gran Turismo- you lose the snapiness

I actually aim to make a game of my own! And with that, i kind of modified my style to translate into a game pretty well, while preserving that cartoony feel

Thank you so much again for doing a critique for me! (I'm John. I changed my name recently) You really helped me to improve my work and the color stuff is very helpful, though will take a while to learn. My characters are no longer boneless XD. I recommend doing master studies of Brad Bird's work on Iron Giant and the Incredibles as well as Richard William's animation videos here on YT for anyone struggling with construction and anatomy like me; they've really helped me move forward. Anyone reading this I highly recommend getting a critique from Brooks here if you can!

Well done, there's a number of helpful bits here. I still need to establish a good rendering workflow from a completed line-art to final product. It seems that every artist has a different process, so tutorials from different sources don't always integrate well with each other.

I just binge watched as many videos by you as possible. Thank you for taking time out of your day to create detailed and authentic videos that really help people out with art or motivation or really any art issues that an artist could face. Thank you :)

Hey Brookes, good video! Really appreciate these tips when you do the critiques. I was wondering if at some point you might consider doing a video on how to do self critiques properly. Since I'm kind of learning on my own I don't really have many peers I can ask for a critique from and I was wondering if there were any methods that can be learned of how to see your work as a critic and help to spot points of needed improvement when you don't usually get that sort of feedback from others. Just a thought though, keep up the great work! :)

It seems like when people tell me gestures are supposed to be rough I make them too rough so I go tight and have to refine them more so they look better. It’s hard to not turn them into stick figures when they say go loose and I don’t know how loose they want it 😫😫😫
@maessu9233
4 жыл бұрын
Follow the lines and analize the structure. With rough they mean "Don't mind errors", no "Go wild"; like a clean sketch. The lines should be clean and understandable at first view, but you might have to draw a line a few times to get the shape right. Ah, and with getting loose: try to make quick but precise lines. Don't think too much on them! I hope this helps you, but obviously it's easier to say it than to do it. Watch tutorials and practice!

Hi again! :D Sorry I didn’t comment on your last video, for some reason I couldn’t see comments for the longest time. :/ Anyway, I have a question for you Mr. Brookes. :D What do you find easier to draw, humans or animals? For me, I am more comfortable drawing animals than people (specifically wolves lol) Whenever I’m about to attempt to draw a person I get really nervous. I like doing it, but I’m scared my human character is going to end up looking like a misshapen yoda thingamajig. 😂 Most of the time they turn out just fine, but I’m always SUPER nervous to start drawing my human characters. DX *haha sorry for my long comment I’m done now*
@CharacterDesignForge
4 жыл бұрын
Hehe, It depends, I've always been more drawn to drawing animals, but once I got more practice with humans I realized it was simply my lack of practice with them that kept me from drawing them!

I enjoy your take on art. It does help me when I create my own work. When you redid Duck's work with the scenery, wouldn't it have been a better idea to leave the characters dark and make the sand brighter? I think the duck turned out well because of the sidewalk, but that dragon just seemed out of place to me.

I wasnt really doing anything extensive on that piece, which i only had jpg access to, i really just was showing how a lighter ground value could help distinguish things, really for next time as there’s other aspects of the piece I pointed out in their personal critique.
