This was a helpful video. I want to point out that I have this model freezer, was having the exact same problem, and there's another thermistor located inside the freezer behind the panel at the bottom attached to the evaporator. In my case, this was the thermistor that was bad. It's part #W10383615 and is $35 instead of the $100+ for the control panel. It's worth checking the impedance on both the thermistors before spending the money on a new control panel!

Nice video, thanks very much for sharing! Here is my experience and hopefully it helps others too. I called out a local repair guy and this is what he told me: The heaters on these whirpool's never fail and he also pointed to replacing the control board. The pricing as of June 2024 was around $250-$300 for part number W11382529, which is the entire part (box, board, wires, etc). When searching around, I found a guy on ebay selling a board rebuild kit for $40, which included 2 relays and 3 capacitors. I decided to pull my board out and get the specs of each component and source the parts myself for around $7. So, if you know how solder, this is a super cheap way to fix and it's working perfectly for me (only been 1 day so far).

@@TeamDIYNow Quick update, it worked just fine for me for a few weeks, then started freezing up again. I may just purchase a new control board and see how that goes.

I really appreciate the video! I came to this conclusion as well since my lights are all on, and they don't seem to ever go off (supposed to be just one light on). It's extremely frustrating that the most common failure for this $700 freezer is a $300 electronics board! This is easily the most expensive part in the freezer, and the reason they fail? As an electrical engineer myself I can almost certainly assure you it's because it was designed poorly. I bought this Whirlpool to get the reliability of a Whirlpool, but what I get is the reliability of what's most likely the cheapest Chinese solution.

Glad I was able to help. Yea I know what you mean on the quality, mine failed under warranty but was only 2 months old! This whole auto defrost is just asking for problems as even other manufactures have similar problems. If you have this same model (WZF34X16DW, WZF34X18DW, WZF34X20DW) the control box is $78 from this appliance store here: www.appliancepartspros.com/whirlpool-contrl-box-w11572048-ap7193454.html

Actually auto-defrost has been around for decades. It used to be implemented with a timing motor and switches and it worked fine until the switches went bad then it would destroy all the food inside the freezer like this one. Auto-defrost is fine as it should only heat up a little every 24 hours, but never above freezing. The problem for this freezer isn't that, it's poorly engineered electronics. I had hoped that Whirlpool was better than this, but in the freezer world all manufacturers seem to share 1 or 2 designs. Wow, thanks for the link! That's about $100 cheaper than the best price I found (and most were $300!).

Great vid! Could you do a vid or tell me where the condenser coils are that I need to clear are located?... usually behind the front bottom grill or in the back bottom, but can't find them on this model. Thank you!

Glad you liked it! Most of the coils are built into the freezer walls anymore. For this model, you should be able to remove the cover from the inside by removing a few screws. Open the door, look at the bottom in the back and remove those screws and the evaporator should be tucked behind that panel.

Now I've figured it out. I ordered the main board, which sadly didn't fix anything. I ordered the thermistor, which seemed to help for a few days, but then it got warm again. I was about to give up when I opened up the coil cover and found the coils were completely frozen! They were frozen with so much ice no air could get through to cool the freezer. The defrost heater is supposed to stop this from happening, but I found that it had disconnected itself again (I plugged this in when I got the freezer and it stopped working)! I zip tied the defrost connector together and defrosted the coils, now it works great! Anyone want to buy a controller for a WZF34X18DW00?

That's the model we're having trouble with. I feel like we started having problems right after the door was left ajar overnight. I'm wondering if that caused whatever is going on. Depending on what we figure out I may be interested in your part if you still have it.

It's still not defrosting for some reason even though the defroster coil is plugged in and it measures 35 ohms.

It feels like mine is auto defrosting too much, seems once the freezer reaches 0 degrees, compressor will go off and within a few minutes it will go back up to 30 degrees then back to 0 again. Is that normal? on my wifi graph for example its at 0 degrees at 10:15am and then at 10:45am it gets to 30 degrees and then back to 0 degrees at 11:30am, and then it just keeps repeating this cycle all day

Yea depending on which model you have, these newer freezers the temperature is constantly fluctuating. The only time you need to be concerned is if it's not keeping things frozen and/or it jumps up to 60 like mine did before replacing the control box.

If you have a local authorized Whirlpool parts dealer, they will probably have one on hand. If you're looking to get something online here are a few that sell OEM parts (make sure getting correct part # for your model): www.partselect.com/PS16744553-Whirlpool-W11572048-CONTRL-BOX.htm?SourceCode=3&SearchTerm=W11572048 or www.appliancepartspros.com/whirlpool-contrl-box-w11572048-ap7193454.html
