Thanks for this. Just wondering - does the tremolo on the second guitar, the floating one, bend both ways. Or is it one way. Am quite confused about this.
5 ай бұрын
Yeah, both bridges (the floyd and strat style) bend both ways. The strat style bridge just moves a bit less upwards based on how I've adjusted the bridge. If I remember correctly, Dave Weiner in Steve Vai's band also used bridge like this to play "The Attitude Song" during one of the tours.

@ The Strat bridge though only moves one way by default. To move it both ways it has to be customised. Am I right?

Is it possible to turn a hardtail guitar into a floting tremolo?
Жыл бұрын
That may be challenging because the floating tremolo usually needs the spring for the floating action. Therefore it may be possible to change it afterward but then you need to take a lot of wood out of the body for the new bridge which may cost a lot of money to have to have a professional to do it.

So if I get a guitar with the second bridge type I won't have to worry about adjustments in the springs when changing tuning?
2 жыл бұрын
What I've noticed with that second bridge type was that I can switch from E standard to Drop C# and I may have to tune the guitar once or twice until the bridge will be in place for using the bridge. Of course, if you want to have ideal set up with the bridge, you would adjust the springs just a bit but I haven't noticed a huge difference with that.

I've never liked the PRS floating bridge. I don't like the idea of the bridge coming back and dinging the body of the guitar. It weirds me out.

I haven’t really noticed that the bridge causes any dings to the body within the last 7 years I’ve been beating this guitar.

@ That's good to know. If you ever ship the guitar though, be sure to put some foam or bubble wrap under it. I've seen them get damaged in shipping pretty badly.

Are block bridges and fixed bridges the same?
2 жыл бұрын
I'd say yes and no. Haven't really blocked any of the bridges I have but as far as what I've understood that way the bridge won't move towards the guitar body. This allows it to function the same way as the fixed bridge that stays in the same angle/position. On the other hand, fixed bridge is made in a way that it's not supposed to move at all (besides setting up the intonation) and therefore there's not many connecting parts with the guitar string that may affect the way how the string moves. It would be interesting to do a comparison between same exact guitar model but with different bridges to hear if that affects to the tone.

nice video, but one thing is not clear to me, why can't you tune a guitar with tremolo in open tunings or low tunings?
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! And sorry about not clearly pointing out on video why not to tune a guitar with tremolo in open tunings or low tunings. I think the main reason is that tuning the guitar either lower tuning or an open tuning switches the way how the strings create tension in the guitar. If you tune the guitar lower and add string gauge, the tuning stability issues may appear. The Ibanez Jem you see on that video is tuned to Drop B and it has .11-54 set on it so it can go quite low. Of course there are exceptions who are using guitar like that in open tuning. A good example is Mattias Eklundh from Freak Kitchen.

You can, but it takes a lot of time to find the correct balance in the tension of the strings and springs if you are changing from a different tuning. In a floating bridge, the tension of each string and springs affects the whole tuning of the guitar (if, say, you lower the 6th string a whole tone, the rest of the string's tension will lower as well AND the bridge's balance position will shift backwards, then you'll have to compensate for all of it step by step, until you reach a new equilibrium). If you want to change your tuning often, a fixed bridge is easier and faster to work with.

You could tighten the claw tho for lower tunings right|?

It's only guitarists that call these types of bridges "floating". All other string instruments, and even with some guitars, a floating bridge is one that is not connected to the body of the instrument and is held in place only by string tension, such as violins, mandolins, banjos, etc. You remove the strings and the bridge falls off. These spring loaded bridges are still fixed to the instrument and not floating in the same way all other string instruments use that term.

Well, I'd say it makes sense to call it floating bridge because it's on top of the body of the guitar and it still moves a bit once being used. What would be the correct term to use if floating bridge is considered wrong?

That's really nice! I'm kind of rotating between my guitars so it really depends on my mood and what I'm working on. One of my future plans is to have cu24 some day.

There are many metal guitarists who prefer a fixed bridge guitar and although they are soloists they dont like whammy bars of any kind. For example randy rhoads played with a string through jackson or with a fixed bridge les paul or Slash with Gnr. Why is that? Nevertheless, these, are not guitarists who changed tunings very often

Yeah, that's true! I think most of my influences are the guitarist who are known from using floating bridge guitars. Of course, there are a lot of metal guitarists that prefer fixed bridges and they sound amazing. I think those guitarists just prefer to use that kind of guitar because this instrument is all about the preferences of the specs.
