Do you have a Singer 500a which consistently jams and skips a stitch? The thread breaks down in the bobbin case while sewing? Well don't set it aside or throw it away. I had one too, but I figured out how to correct the problem by making a small modification to the Position Finger by removing the delint pin and smoothing out the corner of the Position Finger and putting it back in the machine. By carefully following these instructions you can save that beautiful machine and put it back to work.
Please share this fix on your forums and spread the word. This fix will resolve and save many 500a. As a matter of fact, I got this tip from a retired Singer repairman who explained to me that it was part of the Knit Kit for a 500a when many Singer 500a owners started having the same problem.
I shared the fix on this forum where many others had the same problem. See my comments from MarbleGems.

I bought an old Singer 500a that came with the problem. The lady I bought it from had even had it serviced a couple years ago. The problem is it would jam on a regular basis making it very frustrating to sew with. Another person I knew bought a 500a and had the same problem. After a couple months of searching for a solution and trying all sorts of adjustments, repairs and service, I found the solution to the problem. Remove the delint pin on the Position Finger. This and the 503a were the only sewing machines that had it and many people have experienced the same problem. Many 500a machines never really have this problem. After fixing my machine last year, I acquired another tired old 500a I am in the process of fixing which had already had the delint pin broken off, so I made this video to share with Singer 500a owners and Andy Tube, who has made hundreds of detailed sewing machine repair videos and wanted to see how I did it.
Caution: Some disassembly required!
Also see page 23 of the Singer 500a Service Manual for removal and replacement instructions. Find the online manual here to download for free. sewingdude.wordpress.com/2012...
NOTE: This is not a modification for amateurs. It is a modification someone can make who is semi-skilled at repairing a sewing machine. However, I believe any determined person can do this by carefully studying the video and following the repair manual.
Here is a very detailed video, bu Andy Tube (Thank you!) of setting the timing of a 503a, sister to the 500a.
